Scholars in Britain called for adding vitamin D to common foods such as bread and milk to help fight Corona, according to a newspaper, The Guardian.

A few studies show that low levels of vitamin D may lead to an increased risk of contracting the infection or suffering from its severe effects.

Researchers in Spain discovered last week that 82% of 216 people with corona have low levels of vitamin D. Another research depicts that levels of vitamin D have little or no effect on corona, influenza and respiratory diseases.

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to bone problems in children and adults, which may in turn cause deformities. Children who have very low levels of vitamin D are more prone to hypocalcemia which leads to seizures and heart failure.

However, Public Health England (PHE) and Ministry of Health and Welfare have rejected calls over the past ten years to fortify foods such as milk, bread and orange juice. It is the same in Finland, Sweden, Australia and Canada.

A researcher in medical physics, Dr. Gareth Davis, said that vitamin D not only protects against disease, but also against infection. Adding it to foods needs careful planning and must be done effectively.

Adrian Martineau, professor of respiratory infection at Queen Mary University of London, said the government recommends residents take vitamin D supplements in the winter months, and there are those at risk who take them all year-round.

It's starting to look like the Democrats have rebuilt a key part of their "blue wall" in the Midwest.

With 99 percent of the votes counted in Wisconsin, Joe Biden has a 20,610-vote lead over Donald Trump.

In 2016, Trump won Wisconsin and collected its 10Electoral College votes with a 0.8 percent margin.

Biden is currently leading by 0.6 percent.

Trump's campaign has called for a recount. That drew a sharp rebuke from Biden campaign senior legal adviser Bob Bauer, who told the Washington Post that Biden has won Wisconsin.

"I have to note at the outsetafter having declared a victory in Wisconsin last night, thePresident is now asking for the recount, so their messaging is a bit scrambled," Bauer said.

Bauer also insisted that Bidenhas won Michigan, another Midwestern state that wentfor Trump in 2016.

Biden currently has a 455,000-vote lead in Michigan with about 94 percent of the votes counted.

Michigan has 16 Electoral College votes.

If Biden wins Wisconsin and Michigan, it would lift his total to 264with 270 necessary to win.

Should Biden win Nevada's six Electoral College votes, it would bring him up to 270.

Biden has a 0.6 percent edge over Trump in Nevada as of this writing. He's currentlyahead in this state by 7,647 votes, with about two-thirds of all ballots counted.

If Biden retains this lead, he wouldbecome president even if he were to lose Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia.

The Associated Press has declared Biden the winner in Wisconsin.

It is not without reason that wheatgrass is considered to be a wonder ingredient. Even a little quantity of wheatgrass is rich in vitamins A, C, E, K and even B6. Apart from these, it also contains traces of several essential minerals and is dense in micronutrients and phytochemicals.

Wheatgrass is the leaf that sprouts in the common wheat plant, known as Triticum aestivum. Wheatgrass has always been used as a food, drink, and even recommended as a dietary supplement. It is grown in the temperate regions throughout the world and even in India, especially in the Himalayan region. It is a one-stop solution to all your nutrient deficiencies, and also has several benefits, says Gupreet Singh, Managing Director of Jivo Wellness.

Below, he lists some benefits; check them out:

1. Rich in antioxidants

Antioxidants are important to protect our body from the free-radical and also help in preventing cell dying, cancer, accelerated ageing and chronic inflammation. Wheatgrass is rich in antioxidants, thereby making the body healthier, stronger and better.

2. Immunity booster

Wheatgrass contains 17 different types of amino acids, numerous antioxidants and is home to a lot of essential vitamins. Consuming wheatgrass is directly related to boosting your immune system. It makes your body stronger from the inside and accelerates healing. Thefibre content stimulates digestion.

3. Good for digestion and detox

Wheatgrass has a very high fibre content which is directly related in managing digestion and fight piles, irritable bowel syndrome and constipation. It is usually recommended to drink wheatgrass juice in the morning to enable a full body detox. The antioxidants present in wheatgrass cleanse and rejuvenate the body for its better function.

4. Low-calorie content and a good source of protein

5. Contains chlorophyll which helps in building haemoglobin

Since wheatgrass is the first and freshly sprouted leaves of the wheat plant, it contains chlorophyll in good amount. Chlorophyll is a great source to stimulate and accelerate the growth of red blood cells which in turn increases the haemoglobin levels. Anaemic people, menstruating population, women in menopause can also look at this alternative to regain the lost haemoglobin naturally and effectively.

How to consume it?

Wheatgrass can be consumed directly in the form of a tablet or juice. However, the best way to consume it is in direct concentrated form as a shot or mixed with other ingredients to make juice. I am encouraged that Dame Louise Casey has made such a powerful case for a wholesale approach to tackle disadvantage.

She said normal people are being forced into destitution.

How can we accept children growing up with inadequate food and housing?

The care workers and the health staff put their humanity above fear of Covid. I ask for the same dedication to tackle the growing inequalities in our system.

My father said Governments make wars, ordinary people do the best they can.

Emergencies depend on ordinary people. Prior to World War II, the government recognised that recruits were too malnourished to fight effectively.

Research established the basic diet which enabled the rations for all. The war brought in rations that made us all food insecure.

What we ate was enough because it was researched and provided a healthy nation.

Now research reveals that the processed food industry not only fails to nourish us but includes ingredients harmful to good gut bacteria.

Cheap, addictive food is good profit but at societys expense.

Herefordshire has some of the most deprived areas and the gap is widening. The few grow rich and the poor struggle.

Government needs to serve all.

The war-time coalition cabinet ensured the best people worked together for the good of all.

Providing a healthy society in mind and body would truly honour the NHS. Surely now is the time to address the vast inequality of our society.

Basic necessities for all is morally right.

It is also in societys interest. I consider this our abolition of slavery crisis.

We include products we think are useful for our readers. If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a small commission. Heres our process.

Niacinamide is inamide. As a skin care ingredient, its gaining popularity super fast because of a long list of reported benefits. You may even already have some products in your skin care arsenal that contain it.

So heres the scoop on exactly what it is, what it can do for your skin, and a few ways to add it to your daily routine, along with some of our top picks for niacinamide supplements and skin care products.

Niacinamide, sometimes called nicotinamide (no relation to the addictive substance found in tobacco), is the active form of niacin (vitamin B-3). Its the form most commonly found in niacin supplements or skin care products.

Niacin is a vitamin every single tissue in your body needs a constant supply of to continue producing energy to power your cells. It helps your body harness the energy in food you eat and transform it into something you can use. (Read: Its pretty darn important.)

Additionally, niacin has a number of positive effects on your skin. Even better, you can get many of these benefits by consuming niacin orally OR by using niacinamide-containing skin care products.

And hey, why not both?

If you need proof that niacinamide is pure skin food, here it is.

Many of these benefits are results of niacinamides potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects on your skin, which allow it to protect your cells from damage.

A high quality 2015 study of more than 300 people found that high-dose niacinamide supplementation resulted in a 23 percent decrease in the development of new nonmelanoma skin cancers compared to a placebo.

While protecting skin cells from damage caused by UV rays, niacinamide also helps rebuild healthy skin cells.

One animal study in 2017 found that a leave-on niacinamide formulation boosted antimicrobial peptide (AMP) activity on the skin, providing more protection against potentially harmful bacteria.

One of the main benefits of topical niacinamide is that helps prevent hyperpigmentation, the development of discolored patches on your skin.

In a 2010 study of 101 women, those who used moisturizers containing niacinamide for 10 weeks had greater reductions in hyperpigmentation than those who used products without niacinamide.

According to a 2011 study, niacinamide seems to promote a more even skin tone by slightly decreasing melanin production without compromising the health of melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin.

Topical niacinamide may also increase the thickness of the stratum corneum, the top layer of your skin.

This can help your skin better hold on to moisture and improve your skin barrier function, which plays a huge role in immune health. (Remember: Your skin is your bodys biggest immune organ!)

According to a 2018 study, topical niacinamide may be able to reduce the number of acne spots on your skin by 40 to 60 percent, so ummmm sign us up!

Even for severe acne, research indicates that niacinamide may be helpful.

Another win: A 2010 study found that over-the-counter creams containing niacinamide and retinyl propionate have comparable wrinkle-reducing effects to prescription tretinoin creams, with fewer side effects.

Looking to combat redness or blotchiness? Niacinamide to the rescue! Its been shown to reduce inflammation, which in turn can help ease redness from acne, eczema, and other skin woes. Niacinamide may also help reduce pore size over time bonus!

Surprisingly, oral niacinamide intake may also help protect against water losses through the skin, leaving your skin more hydrated.

In science speak: Niacinamide helps your skin develop a ceramide (lipid) barrier which, in turn, helps retain moisture. Hello, impossibly dewy glow!

As you can see, your skin may seriously benefit from oral or topical niacinamide. Heres how to add it to your daily routine.

Niacin is mostly found in animal foods like beef, chicken, and fish, but you can also get it from nuts, seeds, and beans. Most grain products are enriched with some niacin too. (So no worries, plant-based eaters!)

The niacin found in food is usually just plain ol niacin, but its quickly converted into niacinamide once you digest it. Your body can actually convert tryptophan (an amino acid thats used to build proteins) into niacinamide too.

Snackin on B-3

Eat up! You can get some of the benefits of niacinamide from noshing on these nutrient-rich foods that contain B-3:

Most adults need at least 14 milligrams of niacin or niacin equivalents (NE) like tryptophan daily, but men and folks who are pregnant or breastfeeding have slightly higher needs.

Niacin deficiency can lead to a disease called pellagra, which has pretty much been eradicated in most developed countries.

You may want to consider supplementing if you have liver damage or an eating disorder or if you currently have or previously had an alcohol use disorder. This is def a conversation to have with your healthcare provider, though.

Most of the benefits of oral niacin intake found in studies were based on niacinamide supplements rather than intake of niacin-containing foods. But taking sky-high doses like the ones used in some studies can result in less-than-pleasant side effects.

Taking too much niacin can cause something called niacin flush, which includes uncomfortable skin redness and irritation and some potentially more serious complications like elevated body temp or blood pressure changes.

Niacinamide is naturally flush-free, so you can safely take higher doses without these pesky side effects. Just another reason niacinamide is ab-fab (absolutely fabulous).

Your healthcare provider can help you navigate high-dose niacin supplementation. For instance, you may want to take a higher dose if you have an increased risk of skin cancer. Definitely consult a professional before you start taking a high dose all willy-nilly, though.

Finally, weve reached topical niacinamide. Most standalone niacinamide products are formulated as lightweight serums. Niacinamide is also added to other skin care products, such as creams, which may also contain other active ingredients.

Topical niacinamide products may cause some mild irritation when you start using them. No worries, though this effect will go away over time.

Niacinamide Serums: What to look for

You may see niacinamide listed as niacin and nicotinamide on labels.

Most formulations are 5 percent or less. Reports suggest 5 percent is effective in treating sun damage and hyperpigmentation.

If you have sensitive skin, start with a lower concentration like 2 percent.

Here are our top picks for niacinamide supplements and topical products.

With nearly 4,000 glowing Amazon reviews, this niacinamide serum is definitely a favorite. Its got some added zinc and is vegan and cruelty-free.

Paulas Choice is a cult favorite for skin care enthusiasts everywhere, and this niacinamide serum does not disappoint. Its got added antioxidants and licorice extract to boost its soothing, skin-nourishing activity.

This serum from InstaNatural is made with squeaky-clean ingredients like rosemary extract and avocado oil, but the star (of course) is the moisturizing, pore-minimizing niacinamide.

This supplement comes from a brand that healthcare professionals trust and is totally free of unnecessary ingredients. It provides 500 milligrams of extended-release, flush-free niacinamide per serving.

This high quality, natural niacinamide supplement is non-flushing and contains 500 milligrams per serving. Its also vegan and gluten-free.

Jarrow Formulas is another favorite brand among healthcare providers. This niacinamide supplement is flush-free and provides 250 milligrams per serving.

A weekend referendum on a proposal to reorganize Osakas administrative structure has highlighted a key question relevant to other local governments.

The question concerns the fact that foreign nationals are not allowed to vote in local elections no matter how long they have lived in Japan.

It is beyond reason that they cannot express their will over issues that their local communities face even if they live in this country like Japanese nationals, paying taxes and fulfilling other civic obligations.

The movement to allow foreign residents to vote in local elections has stalled over the past decade. But the ball should start rolling again.

The proposal is to reorganize Osaka into a metropolitan-style government by abolishing the city government and replacing it with four special wards similar to Tokyos 23 wards.

The law for establishing special wards in large cities, which provides legal grounds for the Nov. 1 referendum, stipulates that the provision concerning the right to vote in the Public Offices Election Law should be applied to referendums on such proposals. The provision says only Japanese nationals can vote in elections covered by the law.

This precludes foreign residents in Osaka, including many ethnic Koreans, from casting votes in the referendum. They have questioned and expressed discontent and frustration over the denial of their right to take part in a vote that has important implications for the future of their communities.

When the special wards bill, which was drafted and introduced by Diet members, was enacted eight years ago, this question was not in the minds of lawmakers who supported it.

Citizen groups submitted a petition for a revision to the law to deal with this problem during the previous ordinary Diet session. But there was little debate on the petition. It is vital to revise not only the special wards law but also the Public Offices Election Law, which is at the heart of the problem.

The question of whether foreign residents who have long lived in Japan should be given the right to vote in local elections--but not in national elections that concern foreign and security policy issues as well--began to be actively debated in the 1990s.

In 1993, the Kishiwada municipal assembly voted to call for giving such foreign residents the right to vote. It was followed by similar moves by other local assemblies.

In 1995, the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution does not prohibit granting permanent foreign residents the right to vote in local elections, while dismissing a request for the right filed by Korean residents. The ruling has effectively left the decision up to the Diet.

In the arena of state politics, Komeito, the junior partner of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, and some other parties have submitted related bills to the Diet.

In the late 1990s, a tripartite agreement to form a ruling coalition among the LDP, the now-defunct Liberal Party and Komeito called for giving permanent foreign residents voting rights. But the proposal failed to materialize due to strong opposition within the LDP.

In 2010, the government, led by the former Democratic Party of Japan, abandoned plans to submit a bill for the purpose. The question has since been left in political limbo.

Meanwhile, foreign residents have been allowed to vote in more than 200 local referendums conducted by local governments based on their ordinances, many of whichconcerned proposed mergers with other municipalities.

The central government has been promoting a policy of allowing more foreigners to work in Japan in response to labor shortage. This policy tests the nations commitment to accepting foreign workers as members of local communities.

Many argue that foreign residents should obtain Japanese nationality if they want to vote in elections. But foreign residents natural desire to retain their nationality should be respected.

Japan is a rare industrial nation that does not grant foreign residents the right to vote while banning dual nationality. The government and political leaders should recognize the urgency of tackling this issue.

Reuters reports that the researchers published the recommendation in a larger study that called for better protection of nature.

"Over-consumption of meat... (is) bad for our health. It's unsustainable in terms of environmental impact. It's also a driver of pandemic risk," Peter Daszak, a zoologist who chaired the study, told journalists at its launch.

Outbreaks of influenza viruses and new pandemic strains have emerged largely because of "incredibly dense production of poultry and pigs in some parts of the world, driven by our global consumption patterns", he added.

Breeding cattle for beef is another well-known cause of deforestation and ecosystem destruction in Latin America.

The study warned that pandemics will emerge more often, spread faster, cost more and kill more people than COVID-19 without bold action to halt the habitat destruction that helps viruses hop from wildlife to humans.

It also urged governments to step up efforts to avert pandemics, instead of responding after they hit.

Dutch scientist Thijs Kuiken, one of 22 international experts who produced the study, agreed that people should cut back on meat-eating.

"Changing your diet so that you have a sensible consumption of meat is really important for reducing the risk of pandemics, and for conserving biodiversity and nature," he said.

Daszak acknowledged that the idea of a livestock levy or meat tax was "controversial" but said it was a price worth paying to head off future pandemics.

"There's a new generation out there who are willing to make those personal decisions that will lead to a more sustainable lifestyle - and we're hoping that's going to save our planet in terms of biodiversity loss, climate change and pandemic risk," he said.

The growing, globalised livestock industry is "very profitable" - and previous studies have suggested taxing meat production and consumption to nudge the industry towards ways of operating that do less harm to the planet and people, he said.

"This is a viable strategy and should be looked at by governments and by intergovernmental organisations as a way forward," he added.

Rising demand for meat, particularly in developed countries and emerging economies, also threatens biodiversity and contributes to climate change, said the report issued by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, which has more than 130 member states.

It pointed to the destruction and degradation of the rainforest in Brazil and other Amazon countries, which is fuelling the carbon emissions that are heating up the planet.

Climate change could, in turn, expand the threat of deadlier and costlier diseases, the experts warned.

"There's certainly clear and strong evidence that climate change has caused a shift in vector-borne diseases," said Daszak.

Those include tick-borne encephalitis, a potentially fatal illness spread by ticks, which is moving north in Europe.

"The future impact of climate change on emerging disease is likely to be very significant," he added. "Climate change will cause shifts in geographic range of different species, livestock and people... and that will spread diseases more effectively."

The study also recommended that the knowledge held by indigenous peoples and local communities should be included in pandemic prevention efforts.

For example, their longstanding expertise in living with, managing and hunting wildlife could be used to inform safer practices, said Bolivian scientist Carlos Zambrana-Torrelio.

Giving forest peoples ownership of the land where they live would also help curb the threat of pandemics, he said.

"By improving land tenure... deforestation will stop in these areas, there won't be any expansion of agriculture into indigenous communities and that will prevent the emergence of diseases," he added.

Set aside that crossword puzzle and get moving, because exercise is one of the best things you can do for an aging brain. Numerous studies have found a strong association between physical activity and a reduced risk of cognitive decline. Work at Massachusetts General Hospital revealed that engaging in physical activity also helped slow the loss of brain tissue. The mechanisms are unclear, but study authors speculate that in addition to increased blood flow to the brain, the effect may be influenced by reduced inflammation, increased levels of an exercise-induced hormone called irisin, and other types of beneficial cellular activity. The study, published last year in the journal JAMA Neurology, involved having 182 older adults, some with elevated levels of brain amyloid and higher risk of cognitive decline, wear pedometers. Researchers saw the most prominent brain-preserving effects at 8,900 steps.

2. Eat a Healthy Diet

Diets high in plant-based foods and low in meat and saturated fats, such as the Mediterranean or the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diets, have been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. They also are known to substantially slow age-related cognitive decline in healthy older adults. A combination diet developed in 2015 at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago called MIND, for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, builds on these and includes specific recommendations of what to eat and what not to eat for cognitive health. It calls for having at least three servings of whole grains, a leafy green vegetable, and one other vegetable every day (along with a glass of wine); snacking regularly on nuts; eating beans every other day or so, poultry and berries at least twice a week, and fish at least once a week. Go light on butter and limit cheese, sweets, and fried or fast food. A phase-three randomized-controlled trial is testing the effects of the diet on the cognition of overweight adults age 60 and older with suboptimal diets; results are expected in 2021.

3. Get Plenty of Sleep

Sleep is essential for both cognition and brain function, and poor sleep quality can be correlated with the development of Alzheimers disease. A 2019 study led by Laura Lewis, an assistant professor in biomedical engineering at Boston University, built on earlier research showing that animal brains cleared out more amyloid while sleeping than while awake. Her groups study on humans showed how this likely happens. When the researchers used MRI and other imaging techniques to observe the brains of sleeping women and men, they noticed that the cerebrospinal fluid, which effectively rinses the brain of waste products like amyloid, started to pulse in large, slow waves. They also recorded a corresponding change in blood oxygenation that would allow the fluid to circulate. The researchers didnt measure toxin levels, but it seems that the large, pulsating waves of fluid we observed would increase that beneficial circulation, mixing, and waste-clearing, Lewis says. Whether you aim for seven, eight, or nine hours a night, getting adequate, brain-cleansing sleep wont just help you feel less groggy in the morning, it may also keep you bright and alert in the years to come.

4. Take Care of Your Heart

Every research study to date has shown that what is good for your heart is also good for your brain, says Dr. Jeff D. Williamson, chief of gerontology and geriatric medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine in North Carolina. He leads a large, randomized-controlled trial called SPRINT (Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial) MIND (Memory and Cognition in Decreased Hypertension). Last year showed that when older adults with certain levels of high blood pressure receive treatment, it can help reduce the development of mild cognitive impairment. Now, a follow-up study, SPRINT MIND 2, is looking at whether intensive blood pressure treatment can reduce the risk of developing more advanced dementia. Other research will gauge whether lowering cholesterol can reduce early and late dementia risk. Williamson says the patients he sees fear losing cognitive functions more than they do dying, and the good news is there is something we can definitely do about this. A number of somethings, really: Help boost heart and vascular health by exercising more, eating better, quitting smoking (a significant risk factor for Alzheimers), limiting alcohol, and making sure your blood pressure is in a healthy range.

5. Stay Socially Connected

Social engagement seems to be linked to better brain fitness, although researchers have yet to prove this definitively. What we do know is that having connections to others helps decrease stress, which in turn is linked to neurodegeneration. A rich social network can also be a strong motivator to stay active, healthy, and engaged with life. Keep in touch with family and friends, get involved with your local community, seek out group exercise classes or fitness clubs, and invite friends to join you on walks. When practicing social distancing, befriend technology, and fill your calendar with phone calls and video chats.

To fully understand integrated care, you need to grasp the concept of what behavioral health is. Behavioral health is a term that encompasses your mental health, mental health-related symptoms, and health habits. All of it is connected. Integrated care involves the merging of behavioral health with traditional physical health when providing services to a patient- making it a one-stop-shop for all your health needs. To do this effectively, integrated care facilities involve a team of medical and behavioral health clinicians cooperating together to assess your health in a more thorough, comprehensive manner. Theyll look at both your mental and physical health status to determine what may be causing health problems. The team includes a variety of specialists, such as oncologists, cardiologists, neurologists, and more, all in one location. With the combination of their skills and knowledge, they can then develop a much more in-depth treatment plan that better reflects your health needs.
