Over 70% of young people, some as young as eight, are using apps, YouTube videos and other digital online technologies to track and manage their health, according to the authors of a new report.

The researchers, based at the universities of Bath, Salford and University of New South Wales (Australia) say their findings highlight risks and opportunities for young people and suggest that more needs to be done to expand digital literacy lessons at school to focus on health.

Their recently published report with the Wellcome Trust, Digital Health Generation, describes young people in the UK and around the world as growing up in a time when healthcare is increasingly turning towards digital tools.

From survey data of over 1000 young people, it uncovers that young people are accessing digital health technologies from a very young age 75% of survey respondents said that they owned their first mobile or tablet between the ages of 8-11 years with 70% of respondents saying they use these devices for health purposes in relation to fitness or dieting.

According to the report, the growth of these technologies poses problems both in terms of data collection, security and ownership, but also in how young people navigate the multiple and sometimes competing health advice and guidance. As a priority schools should be supported in educating young people about digital health as part of the health curriculum, suggest the researchers.

They point to the significant growth over recent years in a range of websites, blogs, social platforms, apps and wearable technologies accessed and used by young people for health purposes as well as a surge in their use throughout lockdown this year. These cover a diverse range of technologies measuring performance and activity, such as Fitbits and Strava, as well as numerous dieting apps and YouTube videos.

Many of these technologies are focused on promoting healthy lifestyles and can provide young people with important information on their health, including by collecting, tracking and sharing data for instance about how far we run or how much we eat. Yet despite their proliferation, there are currently no guidelines, and young people say they need more support.

Among findings, responses found that while young people often draw on the health advice provided through digital health (e.g. training plans and dietary advice), many were concerned that they would not be able to recognise if they were over-exercising or dieting too much. Digital health tools can also lead some young people to engage with forms of self-monitoring, which have been linked with disordered eating or excessive exercising regimes. In extreme cases, parents or others have intervened to stop young people from using fitness and dieting apps because of their perceived harmful effects.

Lead researcher behind the report, Professor Emma Rich from the Department for Health at the University of Bath explains: Over recent years there has been a surge of new online apps, blogs and videos specifically targeting young people with messages all about personal improvement in their health and lifestyle. These technologies offer certain opportunities for young people, but they also carry risks both in terms of the direct advice and guidance given and the implications this can have in relation to body image for instance but also wider concerns about data storage and ownership by third parties.

Our findings suggest young people want to learn more about this topic, but need help in navigating a fast-paced, fast-changing online environment. Digital health education should promote learning that will benefit young people in ways that help them feel better prepared to manage their online health identities, particularly in relation to social media. Educational policymakers need to take notice of this specific issue in order to update and expand current provision within the curriculum. This trend in online digital health technologies will only continue to increase and we need to ensure young people have the skills and know-how to best cope.

Co-author, Professor Andy Miah of the University of Salford added: The research is a world-first, addressing a major and pressing gap in health knowledge by providing unique insights into young peoples experiences of digital health technologies promoting healthy lifestyles. The experiences of the young people we spoke to highlighted complexities in digital health: many of the young people who participated in our research and forums have experiences of digital health which are both positive and problematic.

In addressing this issue, the researchers argue that it is essential to bring together different stakeholders, crucially with young people front and centre of policy interventions.

The report was also authored by Dr Sarah Lewis (Bath), Professor Deborah Lupton (New South Wales) and Dr Lukasz Piwek (Bath).

Drew Barrymore is talented and accomplished by any standard an actress since the age of 6, and a director and producer who owns her own production company. But as a woman who is not naturally a size zero in an industry that relentlessly holds women to a nearly impossible standard of beauty (rooted in extreme thinness, whiteness, ageism and ableism) her weight has been a topic of conversation for nearly as long as she has.

Throughout her career, Barrymore has had the experience that research tells us nearly everyone who attempts weight loss will have losing weight for a while, then gaining it back again. Lather, rinse, repeat. This process, technically called weight cycling (often called yo-yo dieting) has seen her repeatedly gain and lose weight, with her messaging fluctuating with her weight as well from co-opting the language of Size Acceptance activism at the higher points on her weight cycle, to embracing the language of diet culture during the lows. For example:

December 2018, Instagram:

You can tell my face is so much thinner! This takes me so much work. Diet and exercise and fighting like a lion for it! Damn you genetics!

June 2019, People Magazine (when asked about buying into Hollywoods pressure to be thin):

Never have, never will. I think its bullshit Ive always been a big champion of embracing your own genetics because I was never naturally that thin,

August 2020, InStyle:

I have to work so hard at not being the size of a bus And its OK. That is just my journey. That is my karma. I dont know, maybe I was thin and mean in a past life.

This latest incarnation, in a cover interview with InStyle magazine for their August 2020 issue which they have entitled The Badass Women Issue, has all the hallmarks of post (temporary) weight loss Barrymore praise of her current trainer, discussion of food (often including rigid rules and restriction) and an inflexible attitude around movement.

(Note, in researching quotes for this piece there are many I felt I needed to leave out because the way that she talks about food and exercise would be considered red flags for an eating disorder, and while I am in no way attempting to diagnose Barrymore that kind of language can be triggering for others. Thats also the reason links arent included.)

Theres a lot to unpack here. First of all Drew Barrymores body is her own, so she gets to do whatever she wants to do with it. Its also not surprising that someone in one of the most fatphobic professions in a generallyfatphobic culture has internalized fatphobia, and its reasonable to have compassion for that.On the other hand, she has a massive platform (her damn you genetics Instagram post has since been deleted but got covered in major media outlets internationally including the US, UK, New Zealand and India and a search for it reveals over 300,000 results.) Her choices about her body and how she talks about them dont happen in a vacuum. So when she utilizes the major press opportunities she is afforded to weaponize that internalized fatphobia, my concern becomes greater for the people she is harming.

Her quote from InStyle is particularly damaging, but before we break it down lets get a clear understanding of something. If you arent part of a marginalized community, then one of the experiences you are spared is constantly wondering if someone you stan will use their power and platform to dehumanize you and add to the shame, stigma, bullying and oppression you experience. Thats what I mean by weaponizing her internalized fatphobia.

While her choice to work so hard to avoid being heavier is her business, I dont think shed get so much positive press if she said that wanted to be similarly dedicated to becoming a little less short, so lets acknowledge the internalized fatphobia that is at play here.

The big problem is the bit about karma and maybe I was thin and mean in a past life. What this indicates is that she sees not being thin (by a pretty extreme definition of thin) as such a bad thing that it could actually be karmic retribution. And thats where we get into the weaponizing. The notion that the ultimate punishment for someone who was thin and mean in a past life is not to be Hollywood thin in this life is problematic at best. The idea that a fat body is punishment for past wrongdoings is, to put it as delicately as I can, totally fucked up.

If youre still struggling with why a celebrity lurching back and forth from the language of body positivity to diet culture is harmful, imagine instead that a celebrity was doing this around their sexuality. To be sure, comparing oppressions is a tricky business but as someone who is both fat and queer I find the comparison helpful.

First, understand that Drew Barrymore is often celebrated as a champion of body positivity. Now imagine a celebrity who spends years moving back and forth between claiming that they are proudly gay telling People Magazine that theynever have and never will bow to homophobia and then the next year using a cover interview in InStyle to celebrate turning themselves straight and thanking their newest Conversion Coach for healing them. Do you think this would be celebrated in major news outlets? Do you think this person would be called a champion of queer rights? The only thing that allows Barrymore to promote fatphobia when it suits her is our cultures commitment to oppressing fat people.

Using the language of Size Acceptance activists in between using the language of diet culture (whichis the reason that Size Acceptance activism needs to exist in the first place) is incredibly harmful to the people harmed by diet culture, to the people doing the work to liberate us from it and to the work itself.

It further waters down body positivity which was originally created by radical fat activists, including radical fat activists of color, but has been taken over (and continues to be watered down) by slightly chubby white women using it for profit and pushing out those who created it and those who need it most.

In some ways it may feel unfair to blame Barrymore. After all, she is just (repeatedly) taking advantage of an oppressive culture to get positive press, right? Except there are a whole lot of people who are not rich, white, cis, currently able-bodied and relatively thin (with or without the pounds she keeps gaining and losing) who face much more harm from the Hollywood stereotype of beauty and negative beliefs about fat bodies stereotypes and beliefs that Barrymore has used her considerable platform and privilege to promote.

A platform that brings money and fame also brings responsibility. Taking advantage of diet culture to increase ones fame, wealth and press coverage does real and direct harm, especially to those with less privilege.Regardless of what she does with her own body, Drew Barrymore can and should do better with her public platform.

KANSAS CITY Consumer surveys conducted by InsightsNow, Inc. in October 2019 and April 2020 show how the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting consumer perceptions of health and wellness. The surveys, which were conducted in 10 global markets, including Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Turkey, the United States and United Kingdom, identify renewed consumer interest in functional foods, clean label and specific diet plans.

We are seeing a confluence of trends that is heightening interest in ingredients in foods and beverages, said Greg Stucky, chief research officer for InsightsNow, a Chicago-based research consultancy, during a virtual webinar held as part of ShIFT20, a virtual event produced by the Institute of Food Technologists, Chicago. Its annual meeting and exposition was canceled because of COVID-19.

Mr. Stucky said those who have attended past IFT annual meetings have heard a lot about functional foods. Discussion of the topic has been a staple of most meetings, but the category is generating renewed consumer interest due to COVID-19.

So, prior to COVID six months ago (products that are a) good source of vitamins and minerals was substantially lower interest, Mr. Stucky said. Now, nearly half the population on a global basis are looking for good sources of vitamins and minerals.

Other functional claims that have risen substantially during COVID-19 include good source of protein and provides immune support.

This is something we of course would expect during something like COVID, Mr. Stucky said. It has a dramatic impact on us emotionally and socially.

The second trend identified by InsightsNow is clean label, where such claims as fresh, natural, no artificial flavors and organic are getting a boost from the pandemic.

All of the basics of clean label are increasing, if you will, and getting a boost from COVID, Mr. Stucky said.

Global sales of clean label food products are expected to reach $180 billion in 2020, according to Euromonitor International. Citing data from Mordor Intelligence, Mr. Stucky said sales of clean label ingredients are projected to grow 6.75% annually to $51.1 billion by 2024. He added that the impact of COVID-19 on consumer purchasing patterns may push that number higher.

A third trend identified by InsightsNow focuses on programmatic dieting.

Dieting has been on the decline, he said. With COVID we are seeing this COVID-release spike. We are seeing a big jump in the number of people saying they are on diets or taking on specific types of diets.

Data presented by Mr. Stucky showed that in China, the first country to exit a COVID-induced lockdown, 16% of consumers said they were on some sort of programmatic diet two weeks after release from the lockdown.

We believe this is going to sweep the rest of the people who talk about the COVID pounds that people put on during the COVID lockdown period, he said. Were certainly seeing that now with people in China getting out of lockdown and starting to walk around and realize, I need to lose a little more weight.

Fitness and nutrition coach Stephen Clarke, star of a BBC Scotland show Secret Body, reveals the most common diet fails and how to get on the right path to shedding the pounds.

It can be one of the most frustrating feelings when youve made a concerted effort to cut back on calories, only to find youre still stuck at the same weight.

This, according to health and fitness coach Stephen Clarke, is down to some common dieting mistakes which can be easily rectified.

Stephen, together with friend Rab Shields, runs The Kilted Coachespersonal training business in Perth, and the two co-star in the BBC Scotland show Secret Body in which individuals undergo a body transformation over a 12-week period while wearing padding to hide their progress.

Now, through virtual coaching sessions, he and Rab help people across the UK and overseas to lose weight. Here, he shares the most common obstacles to shedding the pounds, and how to overcome them.

When someone is overweight they think: Im eating too much I need to cut out some calories. So they do that and they start losing weight and they think, great. But your body tries to protect you for survival so it adjusts your metabolism to use less energy on a day to day basis. People who dont eat enough become more lethargic which is a natural response by your body to use less energy, they start to waste away some muscle mass, it can affect their thyroid which can slow right down and they might end up with underactive thyroid just simply because theyre not eating enough food. Then they hit a plateau. Most people then say: Im clearly eating too much, so they cut out even more food. Then they lose a little bit more weight so overall they may lose seven or eight pounds and then they hit the plateau again, despite taking on very few calories.

In my 15 years helping people lose weight I would say 10% of the people Ive helped have been overeaters and 90% under-eaters. Its often the thing people are most surprised by.

I look at balancing out macro nutrients (essential carbs, proteins and fats ) and micro nutrients (important vitamins and minerals) first to make sure the body has what it needs. Carbs have a bad name and so has fat. Fitness pros will promote protein for good reason, but when you cut out carbs its mainly water weight that people lose. On the scales it looks fantastic but youre just losing your hydration not the fat.

Theres a time and place to have them to maximise your fat-burning potential and thats usually after exercise. I always tell my clients that your body is like a sponge and exercise is like squeezing the sponge and taking in carbohydrates is like reabsorbing those carbs back into your muscles. Most people know that if you have too many carbs they will turn to body fat due to the insulin response but if you have it just after exercise it minimises that reaction.

You can start with just mindful eating. Your body is very clever. Focus on sitting down at a dinner table, switching off your entertainment, no TVs on, no phones, and just be mindful of what youre eating and take your time. Take at least 15 minutes to eat your food a lot of people are not aware of their food, they might be watching TV and theyre wolfing it down and theyre neglecting the bodys natural response to what theyre eating. Be mindful of tastes and textures and how youre feeling and then finish when youre 80% satisfied. Thats step number one.

If someone has been overeating their stomach stretches and they therefore can eat more so then they might miss those hunger and satiety cues from their body. Thats why its important to be careful about the size of portion you eat, but also not focus too much on eating low fat. When you dont get the balance of fats right in your diet, you can find yourself reaching for the biscuit tin because you dont feel satiated.

A small amount of fat is an essential part of our diet but it gets a bad name. Our bodies are tuned in to look for high fat and high salt and sugar because, when we were hunter-gatherers, those things would keep us alive. The food industry capitalises on that and in western society our diet is very high in saturated fat which can cause problems.

You can also consume healthier unsaturated fats from things like olive oil, nuts, oily fish and avocados, but again watching your portions. If you balance your fats by also allowing yourself a small amount of saturated fat from sources like meat and dairy, youll have more sustained energy which will stop you reaching for the biscuit tin.

My sister used to eat a full bag of marshmallows because the packet said they were fat free.

The food industry spends millions on psychologists and latest trends to advertise foods and put things like fat-free and no added-sugar on labels to give us a fall sense of security. And while theres a time and a place for marshmallows theyre not to be enjoyed regularly.

Then you take something healthy like Greek yoghurt and shoppers might think theyre being more healthy by picking up the diet/low-fat version when in actual fact the fat is one of the best things about proper Greek yoghurt because it slows down your digestive system.

So a lot of people can get caught up in buying diet snacks, drinks and products that arent doing them any favours.

I have a lot of clients in the US now, and when I start to coach them through diet and nutrition and the best things to eat, theyll say, So its just eating normal food then? Thats because theyre constantly buying products.
