What we want is quick, convenient and cheap. Ironically, the foods that are of most detriment to us are the ones that meet this criteria. What we need has to take higher priority over what we want. Many of us are in college to use it as a tool to help us reach our aspirations, in whatever way that may be.

The unfortunate thing here is that unhealthy foods are hindering us at the point of our lives where we need to be the most productive and most ambitious in order to make our futures a reality.

The most obvious way that unhealthy foods affects you is weight. Junk foods are packed full of toxins, exceedingly high in fats and sugars and bad carbohydrates. Each of these dont benefit our bodies in any way and makes all aspects of your life that much more difficult.

You dont have to be a freshman to fall victim to the freshman 15. Over time, the additional fats cling to the body. Performing daily tasks like walking to class or just tying your shoes start to become harder. The reason this happens is due to the fact that fast food attacks all aspects to your body and slows down your everyday functionality.

While the idea of stopping by the vending machine for a quick snack might seem appealing and innocent enough definitely easier said than to actually limit your intake its important to remember how much damage you are actually doing and how youre preventing yourself from becoming the best version of you.

Getting into shape is a painstaking process at times. And when you reach a plateau, or if you simply arent getting the results as quickly as expected, its tempting to invest in a little external help.

This is where weight loss pills come in, promising to supercharge your efforts and do the heavy lifting for you (metaphorically speaking). Burning fat and shedding pounds while youre sat at your desk sounds too good to be true, but youre already doing the work. And you can buy them at the same store that sells your protein powder. If they werent safe or effective, retailers wouldnt bother selling them. They wouldnt be allowed. Right?

We look across the weight loss supplements you find in health shops, the anti-obesity drugs prescribed by your GP, and the black market products pushed by unregulated websites to unearth answers to some key questions: are any weight loss pills safe to use? How do they actually work? And, crucially, whats in them?

Drug companies have been producing weight loss pills since the late 1800s. Known simply as fat reducers, they were made predominantly from a metabolism-boosting thyroid extract. Then came the invention of 2,4-Dinitrophenol or DNP in the 1930s; an industrial pesticide that still claims lives today effectively boiling its victims from the inside-out despite being banned for human consumption. By the 1950s, amphetamines (yes, speed) were the diet pill du jour. A toxic but entirely legal combination of speed, meth, and dextroamphetamine called Obetrol became hugely popular among dieters. There was just one problem: the comedown.

The solution came in the form of rainbow diet pills. Brightly coloured tablets that combined amphetamines, diuretics, laxatives and thyroid hormones with a concoction of benzodiazepines, barbiturates, steroid hormones and antidepressants to suppress the insomnia and anxiety caused by the former. A large investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration saw many of them withdrawn in the 1960s after they were found to be associated with severe adverse side effects such as cardiac arrests, addiction and even death, explains Rick Miller, principal dietitian at King Edward VIIs Hospital.

Up until this time, access to these medications were quite limited to those given out by doctors to patients, he says. However, a boom from the 1970s until present has seen a rise in over-the-counter dietary supplements, including weight loss and fat-burner supplements, with many containing similar compounds or chemical derivatives to those withdrawn due to their ill-effects... It appears that the mistakes of the past may not have been learnt.

Today, weight loss pills can be split into three categories: medical devices i.e. the weight loss supplements you find in health chains and gyms that tend to have words like fat-binder, and carb-blocker plastered all over them. Then there are food supplements, which usually aim to suppress your appetite with caffeine or caffeine derivatives such as green coffee extract, guarana and cocoa bean extract. Finally, there are pharmaceutical drugs, for example, anti-obesity medication issued by a doctor on prescription, or lower-dose pills that can be bought over the counter after a consultation with a pharmacist.

Where anti-obesity medication is prescribed to people with a BMI of 28 or over or a BMI of over 27 with a weight-related health condition that would benefit from weight loss says James OLoan, consultant pharmacist at Doctor4U, medical devices and food supplements can be bought from high street health shops without advice from a medical professional. The term diet pills can be used to describe both medical treatments and supplements but is a slight misnomer in the fact that diet pills dont affect your actual diet, but usually affect your appetite or the way food is digested in your body, he explains.

The pharmaceutical drug Mysimba, for example, works on a part of the brain that controls food intake and energy expenditure, ultimately reducing your appetite and controlling food cravings, OLoan says, while Saxenda a daily injection licensed for weight loss in the UK works by mimicking a hormone thats usually released after weve eaten, therefore helping to reduce appetite as the body thinks that its already digested food.

Others prevent you from absorbing fat from the foods you eat. Orlistat works by blocking around a third of fat from food from being digested by your body, OLoan says, it doesnt suppress your appetite but it reduces the amount of fat that would normally get digested. When taken under the right circumstances, all of these drugs are safe and legal, though, it has to be said, not without side effects especially if misused.

Many people think that by taking more than the stated dose, they can lose weight faster, but most of the time, this isnt the case, continues OLoan. Overdosing on diet pills increases the risk of adverse effects but wont increase your weight loss. Its also easy to fall into a trap of skipping meals or eating an unsustainable diet when using weight loss medicine, but they always work best when used in conjunction with a healthy, balanced diet and exercise.

The world of weight loss pills becomes murkier still when theyre categorised as medical devices. The umbrella term refers to any product that diagnoses, prevents, or treats an ailment without using pharmacological, immunological or metabolic means alone to achieve it eye drops and throat lozenges, for example. Weight loss pills that swell your stomach with fibre to make you full come under this umbrella, as do carb-blockers, which stop carbohydrates being broken down into sugars, and fat-binders, which dissolve into a gel in your stomach and stick to food fats to prevent your gut absorbing them.

They arent subject to the same rules as pharmaceutical drugs, which are trialled on hundreds and hundreds of (willing) patients before they can make their way onto shelves. Nor do they have to adhere to detailed food supplement requirements, which are liable for scrutiny under the Food Safety Act.

When it comes to questionable weight loss pills, high-street medical devices are the tip of the iceberg. The real danger lies in the illicit online trade, a hotbed of untested, restricted, illegal and fake pills. The MHRA has seized more than 5 million worth of dodgy weight loss pills over the past six years types of which have been linked to 16 deaths, it told the BBC with products found stored in dirty, rat-infested warehouses and garden sheds. Many contained sibutramine, which was banned by Europe and the US in 2010 after a clinical trial linked the drug to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

And yet, despite the obvious dangers that come with ordering weight loss pills from a mysterious online vendor, one third of people trying to lose weight have done so, according to a 2017 survey by the MHRA and Slimming World. Worryingly, 63 per cent endured unpleasant side effects spanning diarrhoea, bleeding that wouldnt stop, blurred vision and heart problems. Four out of five didnt report their symptoms to anyone.

Frightening they may be, but such side effects are, unfortunately, the least of their worries. There have been increasing reports of death in people who consume unregulated diet supplements bought online in recent years, and this doesnt appear to be slowing down, observes Arti Dhokia, specialist mental health dietician at The Priorys Woodbourne Hospital in Birmingham, who notes a rise in weight loss pills marketed for their metabolism-boosting properties. Our metabolism works at a rate that is safe, she continues, an increase may result in weight loss, but it can lead to numerous health complications, including cardiac issues and potentially death.

In pursuit of a svelte body, dieters are dicing with death and among those unfortunate enough to prematurely meet their maker, their final few hours are agonising. One of the most prolific weight loss pills, DNP, hospitalised 20 people and killed six in 2018, according to the UK National Poisons Information Service (NPIS). When ingested, the toxic capsules turn the energy from fats and carbohydrates into heat. It doesnt take much to take your body temperature to dangerous levels, and there is no antidote or ice bath that can reverse it. One man who overdosed on DNP, which is classified as an explosive under the UKs 2014 Explosives Act, is said to have literally cooked to death as his temperature soared to 43.3.

The dangers arent limited to banned substances. In the wrong hands, the star of your morning brew can become lethal. In 2015, Chris Wilcock from Lancashire died from caffeine toxicity after taking T-5 weight-loss pills that were found to contain the equivalent of 300 cups of coffee. Capsaicin, found in cayenne pepper, synephrine from bitter orange peel, and the amino acids L-carnitine and L-tyrosine are all popular natural ingredients found in weight loss pills that are potentially extremely dangerous in high doses. When you buy from an online vendor, theres no way to know whether their claims match the content of the capsules you receive in the post.

In fact, expecting the correct dosage is pretty generous. Whos to say the pills even contain the right ingredients? When the MHRA seized more than 28,000 Aduki Diet pills from a Manchester warehouse in 2016, lab tests revealed they contained the banned substance sibutramine despite being advertised as made with natural ingredients online. Those involved in the illegal supply of medicines arent interested in your health, they are only interested in your money, warned MHRA head of enforcement, Alastair Jeffrey, after the raid. Please think carefully before purchasing medical products from internet sites as you have no idea where they have come from or what they might contain.

Even if unregulated weight loss pills do contain the correct ingredients in the quantities they claim online and, by some miracle, they initially appear to work as advertised theyre still unlikely to be the belt-cinching saviour you want them to be. For some, they may even inadvertently bring about the very opposite intended effect, The Priorys Dhokia points out, if you treat them as a green light to ditch the gym and gorge on junk food.

Moreover, weight loss pills dont address the root problem. They just drain your bank account, your health, and your sanity. Our relationship with food is a complex one, Dhokia continues. How we feel about the food we choose and how we feel after eating is heavily linked to our own body image, self-esteem and self-worth. Taking diet pills can damage our relationship with food, as calories become the enemy, instead of what we use to fuel ourselves.

As a nation, weve lost the ability to eat intuitively, Dhokia continues. We no longer listen to what our body needs but nourish ourselves based on what were told we need, she says. If we categorise food into good foods and bad foods, how does this affect how we feel after eating them? Guilt that comes from being unable to eat as we should at all times and to meet our body image ideals, can lead to a more chaotic relationship with food, affecting physiological, psychological and social health.

If weight loss pills arent the answer, what is? The reality isnt quick or easy. It doesnt involve turbo-charging your metabolism, interfering with the way your gut processes fats and carbohydrates, or tricking your stomach into thinking youve eaten a full meal. In truth, the only one weird weight-loss product doctors hate are the counterfeit capsules filled with industrial powders by some cowboy dealer in a grimy bedsit who wants to make a quick buck capitalising on your insecurities.

The answer, as ever, is a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise. Its a reasonable daily calorie deficit. Its taking the stairs rather than the lift and making dinner at home instead of ordering a takeaway. Its putting your health first and your weight second. Your life quite literally depends on it.

Ginger and turmeric are two of the most extensively studied ingredients in herbal medicine.

Interestingly, both have been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments, ranging from migraines to chronic inflammation and fatigue.

Both have also been used to help relieve pain, decrease nausea, and enhance immune function to help protect against illness and infection (1, 2).

This article looks at the benefits and side effects of ginger and turmeric, and whether they can help fight pain and sickness.

Ginger and turmeric are two types of flowering plants that are widely used in natural medicine.

Ginger, or Zingiber officinale, originated in Southeast Asia and has long been used as a natural remedy for various health conditions.

Its medicinal properties are mostly due to the presence of phenolic compounds, including gingerol, a chemical thought to possess potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties (3).

Turmeric, also known as Curcuma longa, belongs to the same family of plants and is often used as a spice in Indian cooking.

It contains the chemical compound curcumin, which has been shown to aid in treating and preventing several chronic conditions (4).

Both ginger and turmeric can be consumed fresh, dried, or ground, and added to a variety of dishes. Theyre also available in supplement form.

Ginger and turmeric are two types of flowering plants with medicinal properties. Both can be consumed in various ways and are available as supplements.

Though evidence is limited on the effects of ginger and turmeric when used together, studies show that both can help reduce pain and sickness.

Chronic inflammation is thought to play a central role in the development of conditions like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

It can also worsen symptoms associated with autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease (5).

Ginger and turmeric have powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which could help decrease pain and protect against disease.

One study in 120 people with osteoarthritis found that taking 1 gram of ginger extract per day for 3 months effectively reduced inflammation and decreased levels of nitric oxide, a molecule that plays a key role in the inflammatory process (6).

Similarly, a review of 9 studies showed that taking 13 grams of ginger per day for 612 weeks decreased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), an inflammatory marker (7).

Meanwhile, test-tube and human studies indicate that turmeric extract can decrease several markers of inflammation, with some research noting that it may be as effective as anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and aspirin (8, 9, 10).

One review of 15 studies also observed that supplementing with turmeric could reduce levels of CRP, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and malondialdehyde (MDA), all of which are used to measure inflammation in the body (11).

Both ginger and turmeric have been studied for their ability to provide relief from chronic pain.

Studies show that curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is especially effective at decreasing pain caused by arthritis (12, 13).

In fact, a review of 8 studies found that taking 1,000 mg of curcumin was as effective at reducing joint pain as certain pain medications in those with arthritis (14).

Another small study in 40 people with osteoarthritis showed that taking 1,500 mg of curcumin daily significantly reduced pain and improved physical function, compared with a placebo (15).

Ginger has also been shown to decrease chronic pain associated with arthritis, along with several other conditions (16).

For example, one 5-day study in 120 women noted that taking 500 mg of ginger root powder 3 times daily reduced the intensity and duration of menstrual pain (17).

Another study in 74 people found that taking 2 grams of ginger for 11 days significantly reduced muscle pain caused by exercise (18).

Many people take turmeric and ginger at the first sign of sickness, hoping to enhance immune function and sidestep cold or flu symptoms.

Some research shows that ginger, in particular, may possess powerful immune-boosting properties.

One test-tube study indicated that fresh ginger was effective against human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), which can cause respiratory tract infections in infants, children, and adults (19).

Another test-tube study found that ginger extract blocked the growth of several strains of respiratory tract pathogens (20).

A mouse study also noted that taking ginger extract blocked the activation of several pro-inflammatory immune cells and decreased symptoms of seasonal allergies, such as sneezing (21).

Similarly, animal and test-tube studies have shown that curcumin possesses anti-viral properties and can help reduce the severity of influenza A virus (22, 23, 24).

Both turmeric and ginger can also decrease levels of inflammation, which can help improve immune function (25, 26).

However, most research is limited to test-tube and animal studies using concentrated doses of turmeric or ginger.

More research is needed to determine how each can affect human immune health when consumed in normal food amounts.

Several studies have observed that ginger could be an effective natural remedy to soothe the stomach and help reduce nausea.

One study in 170 women found that taking 1 gram of ginger powder daily for 1 week was as effective at reducing pregnancy-related nausea as a common anti-nausea medication but with far fewer side effects (27).

A review of five studies also showed that taking at least 1 gram of ginger per day could help significantly reduce post-operative nausea and vomiting (28).

Other research indicates that ginger can decrease nausea caused by motion sickness, chemotherapy, and certain gastrointestinal disorders (29, 30, 31).

Though more research is needed to evaluate the effects of turmeric on nausea, some studies have found that it may protect against digestive issues caused by chemotherapy, which could help reduce symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea (32, 33).

Some studies suggest that ginger and turmeric could help decrease markers of inflammation, relieve chronic pain, reduce nausea, and improve immune function.

When used in moderation, ginger and turmeric are both considered safe and healthy additions to a well-rounded diet.

Still, some potential side effects need to be considered.

For starters, some research has found that ginger may decrease blood clotting and could interfere with blood thinners when used in high amounts (34).

Because ginger may impact blood sugar levels, those taking medications to lower their levels may also want to consult with their healthcare provider before taking supplements (35).

Additionally, keep in mind that turmeric powder is made up of only about 3% curcumin by weight, so you would need to consume a very large amount or use a supplement to reach the dosage found in most studies (36).

In high doses, curcumin has been associated with side effects like rashes, headaches, and diarrhea (37).

Finally, though research on the potential health effects of both ginger and turmeric is plentiful, evidence on how the two may affect health when used together is limited.

Be sure to consult with a healthcare provider before supplementing and decrease your dosage if you notice any side effects.

There are plenty of ways to add ginger and turmeric to your diet to enjoy the many health benefits each has to offer.

Ginger root extract is available in supplement form as well, which has been shown to be most effective when taken in doses between 1,5002,000 mg daily (17, 18).

Turmeric, on the other hand, is great for adding a pop of color to dishes such as casseroles, frittatas, dips, and dressings.

Ideally, you should pair turmeric with a dash of black pepper, which can help boost its absorption in your body by up to 2,000% (38).

Turmeric supplements can also help supply a more concentrated dosage of curcumin and can be taken in doses of 500 mg twice daily to reduce pain and inflammation (14).

Supplements that contain both turmeric and ginger are available as well, making it easy to get your fix of each in a single daily dose.

You can find these supplements locally or buy them online.

Turmeric and ginger are both easy to add to the diet and are available in fresh, dried, or supplement form.

Several promising studies have found that ginger and turmeric can have powerful effects on nausea, pain, inflammation, and immune function.

However, evidence is lacking on the effects of the two used together, and much of the available research is limited to test-tube studies.

That said, both can be a healthy addition to a balanced diet and can be consumed with minimal risk of adverse effects on health.

A majority of managers in the UK have admitted to putting their companys interests above the wellbeing of their staff, new research has found, leading to calls for employers to better acknowledge and support workers with poor mental health.

In a poll of 4,000 UK workers, conducted by Business in the Community (BITC) and YouGov, 62 per cent of managers reported that they have had to put the company ahead of employee wellbeing.

The survey also found that while half (51 per cent) of board-level staff believed their organisations effectively supported wellbeing, that opinion was only shared by 39 per cent of non-management employees.

Across all levels of management, nearly two in five (39 per cent) UK workers reported experiencing poor mental health associated with work last year, and 9 per cent of those who disclosed a mental health issue to an employer said they were subject to disciplinary action, demotion or dismissal.

Louise Aston, wellbeing campaign director at BITC, said a profound cultural shift was needed so that work enhanced rather than harmed mental health. People who come to work dont expect to be physically injured and they should also not expect to be psychologically harmed, she said.

Too many employers are tinkering at the edges of change rather than making the fundamental differences that are really needed to improve their employees mental health.

Professor Sir Cary Cooper, CIPD president, said that while many companies wanted to take high-level action to improve wellbeing, too many simply went for the low-hanging fruit. They do mindfulness at lunch, diet or exercise, or mental health first aid, but it is not really strategically done, he said.

All the evidence shows you need to train and select line managers for social or emotional intelligence. We're not seeing that kind of thing going on.

Ann Francke, CEO of the Chartered Management Institute, said line managers played an absolutely critical role in supporting employees mental health, but they needed to be equipped and empowered to do this. In too many cases, managers are not receiving the training they need to be effective in supporting their teams, she said.

In the survey found almost half (48 per cent) of line managers said they were not assessed on their ability to handle staff wellbeing, and 70 per cent reported barriers to providing mental health support.

These included not having enough time for one-to-one management and being required to prioritise performance targets, both of which were cited as problems in effectively supporting employee wellbeing by 22 per cent of managers.

While 75 per cent of managers said they would feel very confident supporting someone who was dealing with work-related stress, more than a third said they would not feel confident supporting someone dealing with panic attacks or depression (35 and 33 per cent respectively).

The most common work-related cause of poor mental health was pressure, with 52 per cent of workers saying too many priorities or targets affected their wellbeing.

Workload negatively impacted on the wellbeing of 36 per cent of survey respondents, while negative relationships with colleagues and a lack of trust with their line manager led to mental health symptoms for 33 per cent of workers.

Mental health in the workplace was also more of a problem for certain minority groups: 79 per cent of LGBT+ people reported work-related mental health symptoms, compared with 39 per cent of workers overall. And while a majority (53 per cent) with a white ethnic background reported feeling comfortable talking about their mental health issues, only 40 per cent of workers from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds felt the same.
