Coeliac disease symptoms: Signs of the condition which forces you to go gluten free – Express.co.uk

Sep 1st, 2017

Coeliac disease is caused by a reaction to gluten which is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley.

The disease cannot be cured and there is no medication - the only answer is to cut gluten out altogether.

A person suffering with coeliac disease can damage the lining of their gut if they eat gluten.

If a gluten-free diet is not followed forever, the disease can lead to nutritional deficiencies and is linked with osteoporosis.

Coeliac disease is also linked to cancer of the small bowel and unexplained fertility problems.

Symptoms of coeliac disease are sometime confused with other digestive conditions or food intolerances.

If people eat foods containing gluten it can trigger these symptoms:

DiarrhoeaBloating Flatulence (excessive wind)ConstipationIndigestion

More general symptoms of Coeliac disease in people who eat gluten, include fatigue, unexpected weight loss, or difficulty getting pregnant.

Some people also experience tingling in the hands and feet and swelling of the hands, feet and arms - which a condition called oedema.

Coeliac disease sufferers could have an autoimmune response to gluten and develop a skin rash.

The rash - which can be itchy and have blisters - is a condition called dermatitis herpetiformis.

Even if people eat the smallest amount of gluten, it can trigger symptoms of coeliac disease.

However, the condition can cause significant complications if it is not treated effectively.

Complications including malabsorption - where the body doesnt fully absorb nutrients, which can cause conditions such as iron deficiency anaemia and osteoporosis.

Gluten is found in pasta, cakes, breakfast cereal, most types of bread, some sauces and some ready meals.

According to Coeliac UK, one in 100 people in the UK has coeliac disease, with the prevalence rising to one in ten for close family members.

However, the condition can be challenging to diagnose.

Figures suggest one in four people have previously sought advice for irritable bowel syndrome.

Food allergies are generated by the immune system and usually occur within seconds or minutes of eating the food in question, whereas food intolerance is generally not life threatening.

It may affect the digestion and common symptoms include digestive discomfort, diarrhoea and bloating.

Experts at Coeliac UK said it is extremely important people do not remove gluten from diet until all tests have been carried out.

The first stage of getting diagnosed is a simple blood test done by your GP to check for antibodies which can indicate coeliac disease.

If people arent eating gluten when you have this test, it wont work.
