Best cardio exercises for fat loss – GQ India

Cardiovascular exercises are usually the easiest way to lose fat. Cardio coupled with weight-training is one of the oldest trick in the book to lose fat and gain muscle. For someone whos never been to the gym, it is easy togetoverwhelmed by the cardio machines and have to choose between, lets say the treadmill or the rowing machine.Every cardio machine works differently on the body and tends to burn varying amounts of fat. (To find out which is the best cardio machine to burn fat, click here.)

When it comes to losing weight though, its a pretty straightforward deal: cardio exercises help you lose fat faster. But, aswith everything else, itis also important that you start slow to avoid injuries. Weight-training is also equally important, not just to gain muscle and give your bodybetter definition but also toavoid muscle injury. Here are:

Walking is perhaps the easiest and the best cardio exercises for fat loss. It is one of those exercises which you can incorporate into your daily routine without having to shift around your schedule too much. Walking as a cardio exercise helps you to burn 300 to 400 calories per hour. Thats quite a lot and atzero expense. But, you cant expect to take a light evening stroll and lose 400 calories. You need to take a brisk yet moderately fast-paced walk for the fat loss to happen. Not only that, a simple exercise like walking helps you maintain a healthy weight and is the best way to improve your mood. It also helps you strengthenyour bones and muscles.

Walking is good, running is great but sprinting is even better. Yet again, sprinting doesnt requireany equipment other than a pair of good shoes. Sprintinghelps you burn calories and increase your stamina. To make the most of yourworkout, alternate between sprinting and jogging for 30-45 secondseach for an hour. Even thougha treadmill will do just fine, theres nothing quite like running on a track.

Ellipticalworkouts can help youburnup to500 calories per hour at a moderate speed. Switch up the intensity and speedfor your elliptical workout tobe moreeffective. The ellipticalis an excellent way of losing fat without hurtingyour joints. Unlike a treadmill or a stationary bicycle, an ellipticaltends to workout your entire body.

The stationary cycle is often the most overlooked machine in the gym. But use it well and you will be able to burn as many as 1200 calories in a single hour. Cyclingisnt just one of the best cardio exercises for fat loss but it also helps you strengthen your leg muscles and build stamina. While acycle in the gym isnt a bad idea at all, cyclists will tell you that nothing compares to the real thing. Cycling in the open will not just help you lose fat and get fit, it will alsoencourage you to get outdoors and soak in some Vitamin D.

One of the big movements in fitness trends today involves a return to playgroundactivities the kind of workouts you did as a child. Think jumping rope, running, hopscotch you get the drift.Skipping, in that light, isnt just a kids play. Sure, you had a blast with the rope when you were a kid but the humble skipping rope is also the go-to equipment for athletes and boxers (including he great Muhammad Ali) whose sport requiresstamina. Not onlydoes skipping help you build stamina, it is also considered one of the best cardio exercises for far loss.Done properly, skipping is slightly more intense than walking. The simplest way to make the best of your rope is toskip for a minute straight, take a 20- to 30-second break and repeat.

This ones a no-brainer.Depending on who you ask, swimming is perhaps the best cardio exercise to lose fat. Not only does it workoutyour entire body, because ofthe nature of the exercise, swimming causes almost no injuries whatsoever. Swimming, when done right, can help you lose as much as 14 calories in a single minute. Compared to any other cardio exercise in this list, swimming has far fewer downsides (almost none) and is a great way to lose weight.

Quite like the cycle, the rowing machine is one of the most neglected piece of equipment in the gym. But it also happens to be one of the most efficient one if you want to lose weight. Like the elliptical, the rowing machineworks out your entire body andcan help you lose as many as 600 calories per hour.Advanced users can even burn as many as 1,000 calories an hour. Like with any cardio exercise, alternating bursts of high intensity activity with 20- to 30-second intervals of going easy will help you make the most of your rowing workout.

Though not a cardiovascular exercise, technically, a kettlebell workout can easily help you lose as many as 900 calories per house. Done right, a a kettlebell workout can help you lose as much as 20 calories per minute. As with anything in life, itwouldnt help if you rush into a kettlebell workout and slowly build your muscle and stamina before going all intense. The kettlebell workout will help you build muscle and lose fat and give you that lean, muscular physique without making you look bulky. For best results, alternate betweenhigh intensity movements for 40-50 seconds straight and then lower your movement intensity to 20-30 seconds and repeat this movement a several times.

Research says that climbing stairs can help you burn up to 600 calories an house. And you can achieve this even when youre working out at a moderate pace. Star training is also a greatcardio exercise for fat loss that doesnt require anything besides a pair of good running shoes and, well, a flight of stairs. That being said this is also a workout that can put a fair amount of stress on your knees and so must be practiced with caution. If you have issues with your knee joint, this is definitely not anexercise for you.

High-intensity interval training is a great workout for quickfat loss. As the name suggests, the high-intensity of the workout could help a person to lose upto 500 or even 1200 calories per hour. order to have a perfect workout, you need to get the correct body weight movement paired with a traditional cardio element. The ultimate goal of the high intensity workout is to go all out for a interval and then take a short break and repeatthe process to achieve your final goal. It takes similar amount of time but still help you with more fat loss than any other exercise combined. The best part about HIIT is that it can be done with anything, be it from running, sprinting, cycling, weights or even an elliptical for that matter. As long as its high intensity, youre good to go.

Needless to say, all these workouts must be carried out under the watchful eye of a trainer. Something aselementary as walking can also cause injuries; bad posture while walking and incorrect strides can lead to injuries. So, while some of these workouts may seem simple, it is always advisable to have an expert supervise you in theinitial days of your weight-loss journey.

Three sent to prison for illegal steroid sales in Nebraska and Iowa – Omaha World-Herald

Comments Off on Three sent to prison for illegal steroid sales in Nebraska and Iowa – Omaha World-Herald

An investigation into sales of illegal steroids in Nebraska and Iowa covered three years and took authorities from China to Omaha to Iowa, a Drug Enforcement Agency official said.

The probe resulted in federal prison sentences for Jeffrey B. Lackas of Bettendorf, Iowa; Stanley Szeto of Iowa City; and Daniel Cruz-Bonilla of Fontana, California.

Lackas, 31, was sentenced in July to three years and 10 months of incarceration; Szeto, 39, received a sentence of two years and a month; and Cruz-Bonilla, 30, was ordered to serve three years and five months.

The three men were members of a drug trafficking organization that distributed steroids and human-growth hormone across the United States, according to the U.S. Attorneys Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

The conspirators offered steroids, human growth hormone and certain pharmaceuticals over the Internet, said Darin T. Thimmesch, the assistant special agent in charge of the DEAs Omaha office. (Steroids were) sold to both users and drug dealers across the United States, including recipients in Nebraska, near Omaha, and in Iowa.

The drug traffickers imported raw steroids from China, Thimmesch said. They brewed and bottled them in Iowa, sold them via the Internet and shipped them all over the U.S. under the name Brinkkmann Pharma.

The investigation determined that from 2011 to 2014, the conspirators collected at least $459,352 in drug payments from more than 200 U.S.-based customers. The actual sales could be much higher.

The conspirators brewed steroids in the Bettendorf and Davenport, Iowa, areas as well as in Iowa City, Thimmesch said. They bottled the drugs at a members home.

The investigation was part of a larger DEA national operation. As part of that effort, U.S.-based steroid organizations have been significantly affected, Thimmesch said.

But the demand for steroids continues to propel numerous additional underground labs, he said.

The task force that dismantled the organization was formed when the DEA observed multiple U.S.-based steroid laboratories selling online, Thimmesch said. The DEAs Omaha office first targeted two national labs, which led them to the final operation targeting the regional organization.

Local enforcement agencies each provided officers to work with the DEA task force. The Omaha Police Department, Douglas County Sheriffs Office and Nebraska State Patrol also provided evidence storage and processing, undercover personnel and information.

This Unexpected Ailment May Be Causing Your Weight Loss Plateau – Part 1 – HuffPost

Its a beautiful sunny morning here on Fire Island, New York, and I write this to you on Day 3 of my 10 days of vacation at my familys summer home in Ocean Beach. A lot has happened in the past year, and because of all that, this is my first time away from my business in a little over a year. Quick funny story: The trip got off to a fun start

Since we need to take a ferry to get to the island, we tend to load our wagon up with all of our bags. My girlfriend carries the bunny and her purse separately, while I carry the dog in a carrier case on my shoulder and drag the wagon. We loaded up the wagon after parking in the lot across from the ferry, and within five feet, the wagon BROKEOne of the wheels completely fell off! Thanks to technology, we Googled and found a sporting goods store that sold wagons less than a couple of miles away, and since there was a sale, we got a BEAST of a wagon on the cheap!

Its been pretty relaxing ever since:-)

Now then, as you may already know, Im a HUGE proponent of eating right! You can work out til the cows come home, but if youre fueling your body with sludge (added sugar, grains and processed foods), it aint going to look or perform very well.

That being said, there are RARE instances where clients of mine will seemingly 100% fix up their nutrition, will eliminate the added sugar and junk in their beverages, and will STILL plateau! If this persists for more than a few weeks, then we know we have a more complex issue on our hands

To keep things simple and short, there are TWO things that can cause a plateau despite proper nutrition:

1) An unknown food allergy, and/or

Lets tackle these one at a time, shall we? Todays focus will be on the food allergy side, using a personal story to help illustrate how important it is to make sure youre not unintentionally sabotaging your health or your weight loss effort

Since the end of my studies in college, I noticed that my stomach started to bother me regularly in a couple of disconcerting ways: First, Id get these sudden pangs, like someone was stabbing me in my midsection. Second, Id get a sudden onset shortly thereafter of the runs, having between 3060 seconds to find a bathroom, or else!

Fortunately, I never missed the mark on finding a bathroom when this happened, but I could never figure out what was causing this to occur. My stomach issues continued to get worse, and at one point, they got so bad that shortly after starting my personal training business, Id have to literally RUN to the bathroom in many of my clients homes halfway through our sessions.

It was embarrassing, it was unprofessional, and something needed to be done!

Interestingly enough, a chiropractor helped point me in the right direction. One of my younger brothers, Matt, is a chiropractor, and after he received his degree in the field a couple of years back, my family and I stayed in San Jose (where he lived at the time) for about a week. During this time, I met the guy he had done his preceptorship, and he offered to examine everyone in the family.

Literally the FIRST thing he did was poke me in the stomach gently, which felt similar to the stomach pangs I mentioned earlier. He told me that my intestines were inflamed, and that Id better get a food allergy test to eliminate any foods that might be causing this type of constant state of inflammation. I found out shortly thereafter that I was mildly allergic to a few foods here and there, but that I was EXTREMELY allergic to the whey protein (and moderately allergic to the casein protein) found in dairy!

Up until this point, I was a dairy fanatic! I had cheese with practically every meal, drank whey protein shakes after workouts, and had a glass of organic whole milk or two every day!!

It was tough for the first week, but once I adjusted my diet to NOT include dairy, I noticed that my stomach issues went away practically overnight:-). With better peace of mind knowing that I wasnt going to be doubled over in pain or running to a toilet, this made the cravings for dairy a lot easier to manage. In fact, I RARELY crave anything cheesy anymore!

Additionally, I lost the final 15 of the 100 lbs Ive lost from my heaviest to where I am now, and I literally didnt do anything differently but eliminate the dairy that was causing all of my issues

Moral of the Story: If you feel that youre doing everything right nutritionally, but youre STILL not making any progress, then I highly recommend you get a food allergy test! The results may not only be revealing, but can help point you in the right direction of taking that next step forward to improving your quality of life!

Sincerely,Pete Weintraubpete@weightlossbypete.com

P.S. If you feel you need more help on the nutritional side, then youre definitely going to want to invest in my Food Guide and Healthy Recipe Book!

The Food Guide lays out the three phases of nutrition I use with my Permanent Weight Loss clients. Phase 1 gets you in the habit of making healthier choices, while Phase 2 really cleans up the frequency with which you eat healthier. Weight loss: Drinking THIS with your meal will prevent cravings and help shed the pounds – Express.co.uk

Green tea has been found to leave drinkers fuller for longer, according to Swedish research.

Scientists in Sweden found sipping Japanese sencha, a type of green tea, straight after eating will helped to keep participants full for up to two hours.

Drunk immediately after lunch, and this means mid-afternoon cravings could be stopped in their tracks.

Not only that, but the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found green tea boosts metabolism.

The catechins in green tea are responsible for the boost, and also increase calorie burn by up to four per cent.

And those who eat a high protein, low carb diet may also want to add a cup of the green stuff to their menu.

The cholesterol levels in red meat are high, but a Chinese study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine discovered the antioxidants in green tea lower harmful LDL cholesterol and reduce risks of a heart attack by 11 per cent.

There have also been studies performed on overweight people to see how drinking green tea would effect their waistline.

Researchers were surprised to find big shifts in weight for those who drank green tea regularly.

Moderately overweight people where given two drinks each a day.

For one group all were placebos, the other had one serving of green tea while the other had two.

Scientists who carried out the research, in Shanghai, China, found: We observed a decrease in estimated intra-abdominal fat in the GT3 group, or the group with two servings of green tea.

In addition, we found decreases of 1.9 cm in waist circumference and 1.2 kg body weight.

The study did not include any other changes in diet or exercise.

A similar study that aimed to measure the effects of green tea on overweight Thai patients found the same thing.

We conclude that green tea can reduce body weight in obese Thai subjects by increasing energy expenditure and fat oxidation, the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, at Khon Kaen University found.

5 People Died After Getting This New Weight Loss Surgery – Allure Magazine

Comments Off on 5 People Died After Getting This New Weight Loss Surgery – Allure Magazine

The Food and Drugs Administration issued a safety alert last week after at least five people reportedly died shortly following weight loss balloon treatments in 2016.

On Thursday, the FDA announced that four patients died after receiving the Orbera Intragastric Balloon System from Apollo Endo Surgery and one died after receiving the ReShape Integrated Dual Balloon System from ReShape Medical Inc. The agency reported that all five deaths happened less than a month after patients underwent the procedures, which entails placing one or two balloons in the stomach and filling them with a saline solution to help patients feel fuller and therefore lose weight. The balloon is taken out roughly six months later. Overall, both products are relatively new, with Apollo and ReShape's latest balloons approved in 2016 and 2015, respectively.

The FDA's investigation into the deaths is ongoing as the agency tries to figure out which part of the treatment is causing adverse effects. "At this time, we do not know the root cause or incidence rate of patient death, nor have we been able to definitively attribute the deaths to the devices or the insertion procedures for these devices (e.g., gastric and esophageal perforation, or intestinal obstruction)," the alert said. The FDA has started looking into two additional deaths that may also be related to the weight loss balloons. Both Apollo Endo Surgery and ReShape Medical Inc. are also reportedly working to identify what may have gone wrong in these specific instances. Apollo added in a statement that its incidence of death still remains at 0.01 percent out of all procedures, with 21 reported deaths out of 277,000 devices from January 2006 through the end of March 2017.

This isn't the first time the FDA has expressed concerns about the balloons: The agency issued a warning in February about how balloon overinflation could lead to acute pancreatitis or fluid spilling into the stomach.

Weight loss: How to lose weight by eating MORE with this diet plan – Express.co.uk

Aug 14th, 2017
Comments Off on Weight loss: How to lose weight by eating MORE with this diet plan – Express.co.uk

The ketogenic keto diet has become incredibly popular in recent years as it focuses on eating plenty and not restricting meals in the same way as other meal plans tend to do.

The diet does involve limiting carbs to 50 grams or less, which puts the body into a state of ketosis, when the body turn to ketones to create energy.

Talking about the plan, Carol Johnston, professor and associate director of the nutrition program in the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University, revealed how it works and whether she thinks it is a sensible diet to follow.

The science behind the keto diet claims followers must consume a high fat, low carb diet, similar to the Atkins Diet.

Discussing whether she thinks this is sensible, Prof. Johnston said: There is mounting evidence that suggests calorie restricted, low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets are effective for weight loss, and the keto diet is an extreme version of this.

Low-carb diets can be more satiating, allowing dieters to feel full longer, eat less, and thus experience greater weight loss success.

Speaking to medicalxpress.com, she continued: Overwhelmingly, the most important factor in weight loss success is diet adherence. In research trials, most individuals who lose weight regain most of it within a year, regardless of which diet they were on.

Explaining the science behind the diet, Prof. Johnston said: When carb intake is restricted for a few days, glycogen stores in the muscle are reduced. Glycogen is responsible for water retention, so when its levels fall, so do our water levels.

However, she point out, since most of this weight lost is water weight, it will return when the person consumes carbs again.

But despite her assertion that the keto diet mostly encourages water weight to begin with, Prof. Johnston did admit restricting carbs is a good idea for weight management.

She said: When we eat more carbs than we need, they convert to body fat, which contributes to obesity.

In general, average Americans those with a relatively sedentary lifestyle consume more carbs and calories than they actually need.

Another expert who has spoken positively about the keto diet is Susie Burrell, a dietician and nutritionist with two Honours degrees in Nutrition & Dietetics and Psychology.

She has told dieters that there are many benefits to the keto diet plan.

She wrote for news.com of the keto diet: With their superior weight loss and associated reductions in inflammation in the body, there are a number of benefits, particularly for individuals with high blood glucose levels, fatty liver and significant amounts of weight to lose.

She also said: There is no evidence to show that keto diets are damaging to the body.

New fat freezing method offers weight loss alternative – Huntington Herald Dispatch

Comments Off on New fat freezing method offers weight loss alternative – Huntington Herald Dispatch

With summer drawing to a close, a new (and quite literally) cool option is making it easier to achieve that beach-ready body no matter the time of year.

CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical, fat removal technique that uses a handheld device to freeze and destroy fat cells. This noninvasive medical procedure is known as cryolipolysis and can be completed on one's lunch break, according to Dr. Adel Faltaous, chief of plastic surgery at Marshall Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

"Patients come first for a consultation from a board-certified surgeon, and we determine which areas of the body they'd like to treat. Approved treatment areas include the abdomen, inner and outer thighs, back, flank, arms and even underneath the chin," Faltaous said. "CoolSculpting requires no recovery time. We don't need incisions, needles, suction hoses or anesthesia."

The type of fat each individual has determines the treatment they need, according to Taylor Dillard, a licensed practical nurse for Huntington Dermatology, who has conducted CoolSculpting procedures for more than a year.

"We need to determine if you have the hard, visceral fat or the subcutaneous fat, which is squishy and directly under the skin," Dillard said. "Once we identify which fat cell is most dominate, we determine how many treatments each area needs based on the patients' goals. There's no limit, and we can treat the area until they are happy."

Using freezing plates and an applicator that contains a vacuum, certified CoolSculpting specialists are able to capture a fold of skin with the fat underneath and freeze the area, which destroys these cells. Dillard said a patient's fat cells and their contents are cleared naturally by a process called apoptosis, which means the macrophages - the Pac-men of the body - take them away without ever dumping fat into the circulation system, unlike liposuction and other techniques of fat removal.

The idea of removing fat using freezing mechanisms derived from studying something as simple as a popsicle, Faltaous noted.

"Harvard scientists studied the loss of cheek fat that occurs while sucking on a frozen popsicle. They realized there was a connection between the exposure of an area of the body to cold temperature and resulting fat loss in the area," Faltaous said. "With this research, we've been able to pinpoint a precise temperature which maximizes the destruction of fat."

Dillard said patients can expect to lose up to 25 percent of fat in each treated area.

"At about puberty, we have all the fat cells in our body that we are ever going to have. As we gain and lose weight, we aren't gaining and losing fat cells - our established fat cells are just losing and gaining the weight," Dillard said. "With CoolSculpting, we destroy a percentage of those fat cells every time we treat it. It is permanent because you can't regrow those cells."

Although many patients are eager to say goodbye to those love handles, doctors recommend the patient be within 30 pounds of their desired weight loss goal before getting the treatment.

"CoolSculpting is not intended for significant weight loss, but for treating stubborn areas of fat resistant to diet and exercise," Faltaous said. "Results are not immediate and usually take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to take effect."

Side effects of the procedure include bruising, swelling and a slight tingling in the treated area. Dillard said women who are pregnant or nursing, or individuals who have decreased liver or kidney function, recent herniation of abdomen, recent surgical scars or certain blood disorders are not ideal candidates.

With more than five procedures conducted a week on average, Faltaous said the cost per procedure can vary depending on the patient and the amount of areas they want treated.

"The cost is around $700 per application, and we recommend two applications within six weeks of each other for the best results," Faltaous said.

No matter where you decide to get treated, all professionals agree the CoolSculpting procedure does not give a patient the license to go on a calorie binge.

"The fat cells you've destroyed will remain dead; however, if you gain weight, the remaining fat will get larger and lessen the results," Dillard said. "We recommend maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine for lasting results."

Both Marshall Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery and Huntington Dermatology offer patients treatment with two CoolSculpting machines during the same time, which means two areas can be treated simultaneously.

Marshall Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery, a provider through Marshall Health, is located at 5185 US Route 60 East, Huntington. To schedule a consultation, call 304-691-8910. Huntington Dermatology, Inc. is located at 422 Kinetic Park Drive B, Huntington. To schedule a consultation, call 304-523-5100.

The remarkable history in your cereal bowl – NBC Montana

1897: Dr. John Harvey Kellogg serves the world's first cornflakes to his patients at a mental hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan. Rather than the sweeter breakfast cereal sold today, these cornflakes were an unsweetened addition to the diets of Kellogg's patients, who suffered from a variety of ailments, which he believed could be cured by a strict vegetarian diet and vigorous exercise. In 1906, his brother, Will Keith Kellogg, added sugar to the recipe and began marketing the flakes as a breakfast food.

(CNN) - This morning, more than 350 million people devoured a bowl of Kellogg's Corn Flakes. All told, more than 128 billion bowls of Corn Flakes are consumed each year. While perusing the cereal box, peering over the bowl and gripping a spoonful of the stuff, few of these sleepy diners know that two men created those famously crispy, golden flakes of corn. John Harvey Kellogg, one of America's most famous physicians, and Will Keith Kellogg, John's longtime lackey and whipping boy, were brothers from the Michigan hamlet of Battle Creek. Together, they introduced and mass-marketed the concept of "wellness."

And in so doing, they transfigured breakfast.

In early 1906, at the advanced age of 46, Will Keith Kellogg acrimoniously left his brother John's employ at the famed Battle Creek Sanitarium, a medical center and grand hotel -- a "university of health" that treated the wealthy ill and the worried well and promoted wellness or, as the doctor called it, "biologic living."

Will marched across the street and founded the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company, the original name of the Kellogg Company, which today enjoys more than $14 billion a year in net sales of breakfast cereals, snacks and other manufactured foods in 180 nations around the globe.

Flaked cereals were initially developed by the Kellogg brothers as a health food for "invalids with poor digestion." Dr. Kellogg specialized in treating people with chronic flatulence, constipation, indigestion, all from consuming of the then-typical American diet of greasy fried foods, salted or cured meats, creamed vegetables, spicy pickles and condiments, and too much caffeine and alcohol. No wonder Walt Whitman once called stomachaches "the great American evil."

Will's genius was to recognize that there were far many more people looking for a nutritious and convenient breakfast, so he substituted tasty corn for the bland wheat originally used, added some salt and sugar against the doctor's prescription, and came up with Corn Flakes.

Will was a serious student of the "science" of business, whether he was publishing his brother's books and magazines, selling the foods and health products John invented, running the Battle Creek Sanitarium or manufacturing cereal. He methodically analyzed, applied and adopted efficiency techniques and business systems espoused by the best commercial gurus of the day.

For nearly a quarter of a century, while John enacted one scene after another of fraternal dominance, the quiet, stolid Will was doing far more than merely taking orders. He was preparing to become a renowned captain of industry. Just as Henry Ford was figuring out the economies of scale to sell the millions of automobiles rolling off his vaunted assembly line, Will Kellogg revolutionized the administration of the modern medical center and, later, the mass production and marketing of "processed food."

Will tirelessly persuaded American grocers to carry his products and consumers to relish his cereals. Heralding breakfast as "the most important meal of the day," Will made the hectic mornings of beleaguered mothers and fathers so much easier by providing a quick, convenient, healthy, nutritious breakfast they could simply pour out of a box and into a bowl. He was an early adopter of the newly created field of mass advertising and invested millions of dollars in a neverending barrage of colorful and attractive ads, slogans and jingles, cartoon characters and, when radio and later television took the nation by storm, entertaining shows and commercials. He was quick to recognize and target youngsters as the demographic group most likely to hunger for his products, as they hunted for the prizes he cleverly placed in his cereal boxes.

Will Kellogg, of course, benefited by creating his business at the dawn of the 20th century, when huge corporations and nationally known brands began to dominate the American landscape. He became the "Corn Flake King" during the synchronous rise of urban populations, better living and nutritional conditions, and a national system of transportation, first by rail and later by highways, which allowed for the rapid delivery of raw grain into his factories and cases of cereal out of them. He capitalized on the widespread distribution of his food products, thanks to the development and rise of self-serve grocery stores, supermarkets and, perhaps most important, clean, safe, fresh pasteurized milk -- the essential accoutrement of any bowl of cereal.

Yet there was far more to Will Kellogg's genius than mere timing or the willingness to adopt new business methods. As he labored to process whole grains into ready-to-eat cereals, he refused to be satisfied with the status quo. The boss' charge was to always improve on what the company produced. He developed ever-more-sophisticated means of packaging to keep his cereals fresh and toasty, whether on the grocery shelf or in the kitchen cabinet.

From the start of his manufacturing career, Will announced himself to the American public with a facsimile of his signature on every box of the "original" Kellogg's Corn Flakes. It was initially devised as a means of thwarting the dozens of copycat companies stealing ideas and sales from his cereal business.

Above Will's signature was the solemn promise that the box's contents were tasty, crisp, nutritious and, most important, genuine. This pledge, backed by better and better means of quality control, was essential to building a longstanding, trustworthy and profitable relationship with the American public. Today, an artist's rendition of Will's signature -- the familiar red script "Kellogg's" -- appears on virtually every product his company manufactures. It is a scribble almost as famous as another iconic American scrawl, "Walt Disney."

In essence, Will Kellogg inaugurated an entirely new industry centered on the transformation of foods from their natural state into cooked, shaped, chemically manipulated, mass-manufactured products. During his lifetime, his name appeared on billions of boxes of Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies, All-Bran, Bran Krumbles, Pep, Corn-Soya Shreds and similar products. After his death in 1951, his company pushed glucose-loaded concoctions such as Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes, Sugar Smacks, Froot Loops, Cocoa Krispies, Pop Tarts and a long list of other processed foods.

Many of these products are nutritious and convenient; others may have played a significant role in fueling the current obesity epidemic among children and adults. Regardless of the precise ingredients filling the Kellogg Company's horn of plenty, Will's crunchy concoctions make up the most-consumed breakfasts in the history of humankind.

John, the once-famous doctor, built his kingdom upon the foundation of his personality and theories on wellness and vitality. It was a realm he dreamed would last forever but one that effectively ended with his funeral. Will died a little more than eight years later, and despite their differences, he is buried only a few dozen feet away from his older brother in Battle Creek's Oak Hill cemetery.

The company he founded remains a multinational behemoth of food production. The charitable foundation he endowed with the mountain of money he made on Corn Flakes is one of the largest in the world and continues to work for the welfare of children, families and communities. When uttering the name "Kellogg" today, it is, undoubtedly, Will's industry we recall. As Bing Crosby crooned in the opening refrain of a song he recorded in 1968, "What's more American than Corn Flakes?"

Keto Gets Half Way, but Water Fasting Leads Him To 200 lb Weight Loss – eMaxHealth

Comments Off on Keto Gets Half Way, but Water Fasting Leads Him To 200 lb Weight Loss – eMaxHealth

Less than two years ago David Sandy had used KETO to reach a low of 355 lbs from a high of 440.

He had dieted to about that low many times over the past twenty years, but always found that diets not only stopped working, but made him feel cold, sick, and sleepy all the time as well. On the last round of dieting he tracked his TSH go from normal to hypothyroid levels over the year of KETO.

He found references to fasting helping blood sugar and found that 18 hours without eating could bring blood sugar from borderline high to normal. He knew that his insulin levels were several times lab normal and figured that if fasting could help blood sugar metabolism that fast maybe it could help with weight loss.

He then did a two and a half day fast and lost over ten pounds. He describes the first fast as his hardest ever; including a 20 day no calorie fast he did. He then kept going and figures he's done over 150 cumulative fasting dates since the first fast in January 2016.

Which Types of Fasting Get Better Results

Now here's the interesting part. He doesn't follow a set protocol. Some fasts are no calorie liquids, some very low calorie, some are a couple days, and some have gone as 20 days. He finds the stricter fasts work better, but gets good results from most varieties of fasts and says the most important thing is to make progress. He does reckon that five to seven day fast constitute the bulk of his fasts. He also doesn't eat super healthy when not fasting. He does try to eat mindfully, but between trying to avoid the metabolic slowdown again and finding that being really strict dieting wise distracts from the fasting he that illustrates an essentially foodie approach when not fasting.

I'm not sure I agree with that, but it's certainly a very different approach than any other 190 lb weight loser.

Also, interesting is the lack of a strict fasting protocol. Scheduling his fasts as motivated and fitting into his social calendar also flies in the face of conventional wisdom. He describes the efficacy of fasting itself as providing more than sufficient motivation after a lifetime of failed diets that in his view provided marginal long term benefits at the cost of basically making him physically ill in the short term.

David states that his appetite started to radically decrease after about forty days of fasting and that now he can feel full for several days after a day or two of heavy eating. He also exercises regularly, even during long fasts. He's found that not being able to exercise makes fasting harder since the exercise counteracts the boredom.

David's currently at a weight of 250lbs and is preparing for his final leg to his goal of 12% body fat per DEXA. He had 205 lbs of lean body mass per dexa at 305 lbs so he reckons based on minimal muscle loss that his final weight will need to be from 210-225lbs. He's excited that a lifetime of weight training might finally get to show. If he's off, he'll just keep going.

David wants to encourage everyone who have found traditional dietary advice to be untenable to give fasting a good go and that it really is different. He says his life has changed completely not only health wise, but socially as well and that his lifetime of struggling with diets payed off in the end. He also feels that different things works for different people, so not to judge yourself by people who might need only need to eat somewhat healthy to lose weight. Give something a good go and if that doesn't work than try something else is his philosophy. If you want to follow the last leg of his journey, he keeps a blog called Prudently and an instagram @liveprudently.

I went on the diet that helped Eddie McGuire lose all that weight – NEWS.com.au

MEDIA heavyweight Eddie McGuire shed 15kg in just three weeks ... by not eating.

McGuire started the intensive diet program based on Chinese herbs in May, describing it as extreme.

For the first two weeks he drank three cups of herb tonic a day in place of meals.

In the third week he was able to introduce half a cucumber and a meagre 50g serve of chicken into his daily meal plan.

McGuires new slimline look has been noticed.

Every fat bloke in Melbourne has rung me about it, he laughed.

When you get to my age (52) you get home at night, you are tired, you have been going since 4.30am in the morning and you think, I will train tonight, and then suddenly you want to see your boys and your wife, or the kids need support with their homework, or they want to have a kick of the footy, and invariably you just run out of time, McGuire said.

And I have probably been the classic case of the person who has put on one-and-a-half kilos a year for the past 10 years and suddenly you look out the window one day and you see a fat bloke looking back at you and you realise it is a mirror.

McGuire chose the 101 Wellbeing Program by Dr Shuquan Liu, the same as used by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull several years ago, as part of a health overhaul.

McGuire admitted the first part of the program was pretty intense.

You are provided with these Chinese herbs, about half a cup, you get to drink three of them a day, and some water, and a couple of cups of tea and that is it, he said.

I did not eat for two weeks, and in the third week I was allowed to have half a cucumber before 1pm and 50 grams of chicken, which in the past would not have got stuck in my teeth.

It has taken all the heat out of my body, I feel great, I did not feel tired at any stage, and did not actually even feel hungry, believe it or not.

The extent of McGuires transformation was best illustrated last month on a Friday evening where he was seen hosting an episode of Millionaire Hot Seat recorded several weeks ago on Channel 9 at 5pm and then a matter of hours later was live in the Fox Footy studio debating the football issues of the week.

McGuire said the challenge was now to maintain his new weight.

The next stage for me is to get myself physically fit again and keep the discipline up and make sure I dont plonk it (the weight) back on.

Writer Brigid Delaney underwent the same detox program and wrote about her experience

Brigid Delaney lost a lot of weight when she starved herself on a controversial detox but says she wouldnt try it again.Source:Supplied

The most difficult thing Ive ever done is go two weeks without food not a morsel, not a skerrick, not a crumb.

Id been living in New York, indulging in burgers, fries and bourbon. It was winter, my clothes were tight, my skin looked rough.

I yearned to feel healthy again. I didnt feel sick more just sub-optimum, lethargic; aching joints on the inside, a coat of grease on the outside, spotty and paunchy with bloodshot eyes. My mood was low. Dont put me on Facebook! I had to say more than once, as friends took my photo. I needed to lose about 20 kilograms to get back into a healthy weight range. I needed to reset my body and my life.

Around this time, a curious opportunity landed in my inbox. It was a magazine assignment. Would I be interested in writing a first-person account of a controversial detox that lasts for 101 days? In 2011 Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy emerged after two weeks on the fast, supported by Chinese herbal medicine. His weight loss was so dramatic, people initially speculated he had cancer.

In response, warnings were issued about extreme fasting. The Australian Medical Associations vice president, Dr Geoffrey Dobb, said starvation and herbal tea was not the answer to losing weight. Any rapid weight loss can be followed by a rebound if people are unable to sustain the program they have entered into.

The regimen is not for the faint-hearted. It starts with no food for fourteen days, before moving on to small amounts of solids: half a cucumber on the first day, 50 grams of poached chicken the next (think the size of three fingers), then an egg on the third day, then back to the cucumber. Repeat the cycle for the next sixty days. Black tea and water were permitted. The Chinese medicine a mixture of herbs was to be taken orally, three times daily. The herbs give you around 250 calories a day.

I returned to Australia and signed up to the program. The night before I started detoxing, I had one final splurge. Holding a detox party with a group of friends, I had five or six glasses or wine, some champagne, cigarettes and around 2am, a burger.

In my initial appointment I was weighed and had a procedure called cupping. Staff at the fasting clinic told me that the discolouration around my back after the cupping showed that oxygen was not reaching my vital organs because the internal fat inside my body was crushing them. The detox, I was told, would shrink the internal fat, restoring my organs to optimum working condition.

Days one to three without food were tough. The liquids kept me feeling full, but without meals to prepare, plan and enjoy I was left a bit unmoored. I was tired, crabby and lacked energy. I hid in my room while my flatmate cooked delicious smelling food and once, when I went out to buy tea bags, I ended up trailing a man who was carrying a box of pizza the smell driving me crazy.

In the first week, I was plagued by headaches, low level aches and pains, deep fatigue and boredom. When I slept (sometime for 14 or more hours) my dreams were vivid and strange. I thought about food constantly.

So what was going on in my body in the early stages of the detox?

On the first day, six to twenty-four hours after beginning the detox (known as the post-absorptive phase) insulin levels start to fall. Glycogen breaks down and releases glucose for energy and these glycogen stores last for roughly twenty-four hours. Then gluconeogenesis (literally meaning making new glucose) occurs in the next twenty-four hours to two days. This is when the liver manufactures new glucose from amino acids. Glucose levels fall but stay within the normal range providing you are not diabetic. This is the body using the last of its sugar supplies up before it switches into ketosis the fat-burning mode beloved by body builders, anorexics and paleo devotees.

Amanda Salis is the Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, who leads research and multidisciplinary clinical trials at the Boden Institute of Obesity, Nutrition, Exercise & Eating Disorders. Her research focuses on understanding and circumventing the bodys adaptive responses to continued energy restriction, a phenomenon she terms the famine reaction. She says the reason I am sleeping so much is that your body goes into conservation mode when you are fasting. There is not enough fuel to enable your muscles to move. Neurochemical changes are occurring in your brain, also making you feel lethargic. Its like being hit by train.

On day two I discover I had lost a kilogram already an even, satisfying one kilogram.

On day three I lose almost two kilograms so that is almost three kilograms in three days.

The rest of the first week was torture. It felt like having a really bad flu. On the fifth night I was woken by chest pains that made me fear I was having a heart attack. (Associate Professor Salis later tells me, that when starving the body will feed off muscle, even bone. The heart muscle is not immune from being catabolised.)

By day five without food, there is no hiding from the truth: I smell bad. Really bad. Not sweaty, but like something thats been left in the bin too long and is rotting. When I cry, even my tears smell bad.

By week two I am still losing around a kilogram a day, but miraculously my energy is returning even though Im still not eating. My skin and eyes are sparkling, my hair shiny and my clothes were loose. My brain feels like it has switched from dial up to super fast broadband. I feel sharper.

Yet, there is still the hunger. Most nights I wake up around 4am, starving.

Such a regimen is, obviously not sustainable. I did a modified version of the detox for another 87 days and lost 14 kilograms.

Unfortunately when I went back to eating and drinking normally (not excessively, just normally) all the weight came back on.

Would I do the detox again? Probably not they were two of the toughest weeks of my life.

Brigid Delaneys book on the wellness industry, including fasts and detoxes, is called Wellmania and is out now.
