Golf may be the official sport of douchebags everywhere (not mini golf, that's awesome), but it's hard to deny that there are several people who've transcended the overall lame nature of the glorified drinking game and managed to become legends in their own way. You have to have a tremendous personality to make people interested in golf, and John Daly, with his Diet Coke obsession, is definitely one of those characters.

John is probably one of the sport's most colorful characters. From the often ridiculous but awesome outfits he rocks on the green, to his constant struggles with addiction: whether it be food, alcohol, cigarettes, or Diet Coke, the outspoken and inconsistent golfer has become a subject of fascination for those who follow the sport.

Then there's also the matter of his four divorces.

Daly still persists, indulgent excesses, gripes with life, all of it. It seems that he's swapped out one set of addictions for another, however. After undergoing lap band surgery in order to curb his weight gain, John still slammed back tons of Diet Coke, however his intake needed to be reduced due to the nature of the procedure.

As John said in an interview with The Big Lead, "The band won't allow me to drink as many. If I don't have ice, I can drink it. I can't have it straight because of the carbonation. I used to have 26-28 cans a day. Now I have 10-12 at the most."

In addition to his penchant for sugar-free caramel colored carbonated beverages, Daly also is a longtime smoker, and attributes his lack of a fitness regimen to his cancer stick habit.

"Some guys want to do a little more cardio training; I can't see me being allowed to smoke a cigarette on a treadmill. I don't think they will let me into the gym if I do that. Will they?"

I mean, he could always just briskly jog outdoors with a pack of smokes rolled up into his sleeves if he really wanted to run and puff.

The 54-year-old, two-time major winner has opened up about his bladder cancer diagnosis and underwent a procedure to have it removed. However, he has said that there's a high chance the disease will return.

"[My doctor] said there's an 85 percent chance it comes back. I've got to go back and see him in three months. They will probably have to cut it out again. It's probably going to come back, and then another three months that you don't know," he told The Golf Channel.

John stated that despite the chance of the cancer returning, he was fortunate in some respects, "Luckily for me they caught it early, but bladder cancer is something that I don't know all the details. But it doesn't look like it may go away. We will just see what happens. Maybe there's a miracle."

John's back pains and kidney stones ultimately forced him to withdraw from the Charles Schwab series and see a specialist.

"[My urologist told me] it doesn't look like any stones are in there. But unfortunately, you have bladder cancer. After I did the CT I was fixing to sip on my Diet Coke and he said, 'Don't drink anything. We have to get you back in here and get this cancer out of you.'"

John's career has spanned an impressive 33 years where he's won a five PGA tour titles. He was approved to use a cart last year after getting his American with Disabilities Act application approved. In the past few years, John has mentioned a persistent knee injury that's impeded his ability to play effectively.

Despite his years of bad health habits, he's vowed to make a more concentrated effort to take better care of himself.

"I'm cutting way, way back on the Diet Coke and counting minutes before I can have a cigarette. I'm trying to quit smoking. The doctors aren't saying it's too late. Unfortunately, it's a cancer that keeps coming back. But I'm going to listen to them, and I'm going to try and quit smoking. If it comes back, it comes back. Six months to a year, if it doesn't go away, I'm going to live my life. I'm gonna have some fun. I always tell people I've lived one hell of a life. No matter what happens, I'm not scared to die or anything."

He continued, "It would have been nice to play the last seven or eight or 13 years of my career a little more healthy. But hey, I'm still working, I'm still living life, I'm still doing the things I need to do ... I can accept the challenge. I'm not scared of that. I just want my kids to be OK and everyone else in my family."

Ditch ultra-processed junk food that can speed up ageing: Eat these 6 cleansing foods for healthy skin, body  |  Photo Credit: iStock Images

New Delhi: You may have been told to avoid or limit the intake of processed food, especially ultra-processed food, because of their hidden health risks, including cardiovascular disease, obesity and cancer. Consumption of ultra-processed food is also associated with an increased risk of death. An unhealthy diet can also significantly affect your skin. Foods that are highly processed or ultra-processed have many added ingredients such as salt, fat, sugar, artificial colours or preservatives, which are harmful to health. According to a new study, consuming a lot of ultra-processed junk food is linked to advanced ageing at cellular levels.

The research presented at the European and International Conference on Obesity reported that eating three or more servings of ultra-processed food per day doubles the chance that certain strands of DNA (called telomeres found on the end of chromosomes) would be shorter than those who rarely consumed such foods. Shorter telomeres are a marker of accelerated biological ageing at the cellular level, according to Science Alert, which reported on the new research that suggests diet is a factor in driving cells to age faster.

Good nutrition is essential for overall health and well-being. As scientists learn more about the link between diet and ageing, theres mounting evidence that what you eat significantly affects your skin health. Eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water will help you get that glowing, vibrant, and, yes, younger-looking skin, while keeping you healthy as you age.

Following an antioxidant-rich diet, staying hydrated, avoiding or limiting the intake of sugar and processed foods, getting active will help enhance your bodys natural detoxification system and improve your overall health. Detoxifying is similar to raking bath and cleaning your bodyfrom outside, the system also needs a flush down to remove all the unwanted toxins produced within the body and especially the organs, said dietitian Garima Goyal.

Here are some of the wonder foods that help to detoxify skinand body:

Word of advice: Always remember, when you protect your liver and other detox organs, you are also protecting yourself from many diseases and viruses.Your body knows how to take care of you - as long as you take care of it!

In her weekly column, Bradford West Gwillimbury licensed nutritionist Nonie De Long shares a few herbs you need in your medicine cabinet if you live with arthritis

Dear Nutritionist,

I suffer from arthritis and have to have a lot of medication for pain. I take daily NSAIDs and Im worried. I get horrible constipation and stomach pain and I notice the joint pain has started to get resistant. Ive had to go higher in my dose, which worries me. My rheumatoid arthritis started fiveyears ago. I was told it only gets progressively worse. I know theres no known cure but would you know of any safe and natural treatment that can help with the pain so I could reduce the amount of NSAIDs I take? Thank you for your column!

Thank you!Melaena from Barrie

Dear Malaena,

I love these difficult questions, keep them coming!

You are going to be on cloud 9, Malaena, because I know holistic therapies that both help with the pain of RH arthritis and ones that help manage it long-term. This is because I used to suffer from it. But not anymore.

You see, when I was 19 I was diagnosed with it. I had gotten mononucleosis from working at a cafe and handling all the dishware. When my immune system was taken out with mono I developed painful swelling in all my joints. I mean every joint - even my toes! My knees were at least 3x their normal size! I was at first diagnosed with water on the knee then had tests for rheumatoid factor (RF) and was diagnosed with migratory rheumatoid arthritis. They said it was migratory because after the initial flare up it moved around from joint to joint, often taking out several at once.

I was so ceased up I had to manually unlock my joints after sleeping because they would lock up in the position I had been in. It was excruciating. Ladies, think of the pain of labour and multiply that by 10! Its unbelievable how painful it is! Once I got moving I had to crawl to the bath - probably 3x a day - to soak in hot water. It was the only thing that gave me any relief.

All I could do was eat boiled noodles, drink hot chocolate, crush tylenol 3, bathe, and sleep. I moved like a zombie and a friend who saw me during that time commented that I looked like I had aged 30 years.

Fast forward to today and I rarely have a flare up and know exactly how to treat it if I do. But the solution came in increments over the years. Let me explain.

First, let me back up. During the flare up I had a manual car and couldnt drive because my knees couldnt handle it. This was before cell phones so I didnt have one of those either. And I had lost my job so I didnt have a landline either. I lived in the country and my then partner left. So I eventually ran out of food and hot chocolate. When I did I was forced to water fast. I now know water fasting is extremely beneficial for overcoming inflammation but I didnt know that then. I just knew that spontaneously started to get better. Within threedays of no food (toxins) I was feeling much much improved. Enough to drive and stop the T3. Once I did that, I never got so bad again.

But every year when I returned to school and rather frequently after parties the RA would flare up - sometimes for days and sometimes for months. It mostly affected my knees but also my elbows and shoulders and every time I had to wake to ceased joints I would get that familiar terror... wondering if it was coming back again. I lived in fear. Doctors and specialists could not explain the coming and going symptoms.

Then my stepmother made a discovery.

My father had had a triple bypass and had to switch to decaf for his recovery. Because of that she switched, too. She reported to me that her arthritis was much improved. Did I want to try it for mine? Well, it was easy enough to do so I switched to decaf all the time. Immediately I got about an 80 per centimprovement. So I ditched the caffeine altogether for a couple weeks and the RA went away entirely. I was flabbergasted. Everything started to make sense.

When I returned to school or went to functions I invariably drank coffee that I would not drink at home. Or eat a little chocolate something. I didnt have these in my home. I drank decaf at home because I knew the caffeine made me jittery. So when I drank regular coffee at school or functions I would get a flare up. I also realized why it got so bad with my migraines. My migraine medicine has caffeine in it. Guess what else does? T3s.

I had been living on hot chocolate and T3s when I had my worst flare up!

Today I have to be careful how much caffeine I have. But it took me years to be able to tolerate it at all. I had to work on my liver and remove low grade food intolerances from my diet. Still, if I overdo caffeine, dairy, and wheat I am down for a couple days. You could say those are my kryptonite.

Every person Ive treated for RA has serious underlying food intolerances and is sensitive to some degree to alcohol and caffeine. They usually also have some issues with their blood and digestion. Aside from telling you to switch to swiss water decaf and throw out the teas and chocolate immediately, I want you to avoid all alcohol and talk to your doctor about replacing any medications that have caffeine for a trial to see if it benefits you. I suggest you get food intolerance testing by a professional and figure out which foods trigger you. This is essential in the long run.

Next I suggest a few herbs to help with pain relief. NSAIDs are particularly damaging not only to the lining of the stomach and digestive system but to the gut biome, and this causes an increase in inflammation over time! That is not what we want.

Turmeric and the curcumin from it are both extremely beneficial in helping joint pain. They thin the blood, though, so a licensed physician needs to supervise use if you are taking blood thinners. The good news is it can work just like low dose aspirin without the side effects. But again, do not make changes without talking to a doctor to oversee this if you take meds for your blood. You can get this supplement in capsule form and you can add powdered turmeric to your food. Most potent may be the liposomal form, but it would need to be consumed with food. You can also use the root, which looks like a bright orangey yellow ginger - to fresh juices for added benefit.

The reason NSAIDs damage the stomach lining is they down regulate prostaglandins - of which some cause pain and some protect against pain and protect tissues like the stomach lining. We can effectively increase the beneficial prostaglandins by adding quality krill or cod liver or omega 3 fish oil into the diet as a supplement in therapeutic quantities (again taken with meals) and adding sardines and salmon (with skin and bones) into the weekly diet. You would be amazed how many cool recipes there are for sardines and canned salmon on the internet. Do a search and try something new!

In addition, using herbs to help your liver work better helps address this issue at the root. I use milk thistle, dandelion, and alpha lipoic acid in high doses with custom herbal tinctures for clients with these issues. Professional supervision is best for any high dose of supplements for any length of time.

I also recommend a liquid diet to take strain off of the digestive system and ensure all nutrients are being absorbed optimally until the bodys inflammation is under control. Bone broth is particularly soothing to a weak digestive system. I also recommend smoothies with quality protein and collagen peptides to help nourish without producing inflammation. This has been very effective in a number of clients in reducing pain.

Another remedy for pain that is incredible and simple is capsaicin cream. Its made from the active ingredient in chilli peppers and helps reduce the transmission of pain signals in the nerves. It can be really helpful for rubbing on the site of pain and is very safe - as long as you use gloves to apply it and dont rub your eyes after!

Lastly, homeopathics that fit your specific situation are essential if you want to turn the problem around permanently. But homeopathic remedies applied without knowledgeable dietary intervention do not produce the same results in clients, in my experience. Nutrition is the foundation of the inflammatory response in the body.

I hope this helps your pain, Malaena, and invite you to reach out to address the arthritis more deeply together.

As always, if you have your own health/nutrition questions, dont hesitate to send me an email at nonienutritionista@gmail.com. Readers can find out more about my work and sign up for my newsletter at hopenotdope.ca.

This photo taken on Aug. 31, 2020, from a Kyodo News helicopter, shows Japan's parliament building, bottom, and the Liberal Democratic Party headquarters, light green roof, in Tokyo. (Kyodo)

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The following are questions and answers regarding the Liberal Democratic Party's presidential election to be held next Monday.

Q: Why is the LDP presidential election such a big deal?

A: Because it will effectively decide Japan's next prime minister. The LDP-led coalition holds a majority in both chambers of parliament, meaning whoever the ruling party picks is almost certain to be elected the country's leader by the Diet as well.

Q: How is the LDP president elected?

A: First, hopefuls are required to gather at least 20 nominations from among the LDP's Diet members to run. Following a campaigning period, an election is held within the party and whoever gets a majority of votes wins. If no candidate wins an outright majority in the initial stage, a runoff between the top two contenders will be held.

Q: Who can vote?

A: Normally, LDP Diet members hold 394 of the votes and rank-and-file members of the party account for the other 394. But this time around, the party has decided to hold an abbreviated election that excludes rank-and-file members, so it will be held with Diet members and three delegates from each of the LDP's 47 prefectural chapters making up a total of 535 votes.

Q: Why did the LDP decide to scale down the election?

A: The party has a rule that says it can hold an abbreviated vote if the president steps down in the middle of their term and there is an urgent need to name a new leader. Since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is resigning before the end of his term through September 2021 and Japan is in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, LDP heavyweights have decided to go with the scaled-down vote.

Q: Doesn't it affect the outcome?

A: Many LDP members have expressed concerns that their voices will not be reflected in the results under such an election. To address such worries, the LDP General Council has advised local chapters to check the opinions of rank-and-file members by mail and other means before the vote.

Q: Does that mean the local chapters will hold primaries?

A: Most chapters have decided to hold their own primaries to decide who to cast their three votes for. But it is up to each chapter to decide whether to allocate the three votes in proportion to the number of ballots received from rank-and-file members, employ the winner-takes-all method or use another method.

Q: How long is the term of an LDP president?

A: A single term is three years, and one president can serve up to three consecutive terms under LDP rules. However, since Abe is stepping down in the middle of his term, the new president can only serve the remainder of his term, which is about one year.

Be the head turner The caesar cut

A vintage short-length hairstyle, which suggested by Caesar and made famous by Alexander the Great, with even sides and hair pushed forward to the front.

The style is best-suited for men with straight to slightly wavy hair but works just as well on men with either thin or thick hair. Instead, of being even in terms of length, I suggest you go in for a taper fade on the sides. You may also experiment with the undercut for an even bolder and stronger look.

To acquire the classic (as in the picture) you must have at least one to three inches on the top. Works just as well on young men as it does on mature men. As a matter of fact, for older men, the style can hide and cover balding and a receding hairline.

Clean and care

LOccitane en Provence shampoo

The LOccitane en Provence shampoo and conditioner set (for all hair types) is made with five essential oils with Lavender extract and leaves the hair feeling not just clean but also smooth and manageable. Given the effectiveness of the products, I suggest adding this to your haircare regime. Both smell just as good as they look!

LOccitane en Provence conditioner

Usage: Frequent. First shampoo by working up a lather, massaging it into your scalp for a few seconds, then rinse the residue product out. Follow by applying the conditioner and leaving it in for about a minute, then wash off with water.

Product rating: 5/5

The lean, not mean body

Regardless of age, lean is the new must have shape for men.

While a bulky body may look great for a body building competition, a lean body is a lot easier to maintain and makes for the perfect clothes hanger. There isnt any garment that does not look good or fit well on a lean body type be it casual or formal work wear.

Im not asking you to take fat burners or switch to an extreme diet, just make that little effort to make your body look toned and in shape by regularly running, exercising, dancing or doing yoga, stretching or a light workout at home.

Once youve achieved the desired shape and form, flaunt your body and make it look even better by following some of my grooming tips below:

Dealing with body hair

Removal or trimming of body hair is not restricted to women. Most of us have either done it, want to do it or have thought about doing it.Hair removal transcends barriers of age, culture, religion and last but not the least - sexual orientation.

When: Its best to start only when the hair starts to grow either too rapidly, begins to feel uncomfortable or goes a bit out of control.

Where to do it:

Chest & abs: Recommended if you unbutton your shirt, wear deep neck tees or collarless tops. For a completely slick and clean look, remove all the hair down to the roots. For a more real feel, trim as necessary.

Underarms: If you want to prevent sweating, stay cooler and feel lighter then its a good idea to keep the underarms completely clean.

Arms: If you wear sports vests, short or half sleeve tops, then you may want to consider trimming or removing the hair on the arms and forearms as well.

Fingers & hands: Trim the hair on the hands and fingers if you occasionally wear full-sleeve shirts or jackets and if your hands and fingers are excessively hairy.

Legs: Trimming the hair on the thighs and calves works a lot better than going completely clean not only because it looks more manly and real, but also since its a lot easier to maintain.

The vitals: Remove the excessive hair this will help keep the area dry and sweat free. If you have sensitive skin and are prone to a rash (especially during the hot or humid months), then you may want to consider going completely clean, as and when needed.

The three best options to do it:

1. Clippers or trimmers: Especially useful if your growth is long, thick or bushy. A clipper may not always remove the hair completely but can shorten the length to a level thats very close to skin.

Tip: A clipper is best to use if you like your body retaining some of its natural hair.

2. Hair-removing creams: This is by far the quickest, easiest and most convenient way to remove body hair. If you are using a hair-removal cream, ensure to understand and follow the usage instructions indicated on the packaging. Always test the cream on a safe area before applying it extensively.

Tip: Avoid creams if you have very dry or sensitive skin. Always apply a moisturiser for a few days before and after using a hair removal cream.

3. Wax: Waxing removes hair from the roots and is therefore the most effective and long-lasting process to follow. Waxing keeps your skin looking and feeling smooth for days, if not weeks. Be warned though, that the process can be a bit painful and can often lead to skin breakouts, especially if the person who is doing it for you does not have enough experience.

Tip: Use wax strips to target specific areas.

Hydrate to detox

The best way to start your day is to drink plenty of fluids when you wake up, so the toxins in your body dont build up and flush themselves out. A tried, tested and highly recommended routine is to drink a glass of warm water with some organic honey and freshly squeezed lemon juice.

This simple routine neednt be restricted to the morning after a night of alcohol or drink binging (which of course can result in very foul smelling sweat and body odour on the following day) but can be done daily to maintain a clean gut and have healthier, fresher and younger looking skin. This works well to get rid of dark circles as well.

We all sweat, some more or less than the others. Some amount of sweat is both expected and natural. Generally, men who drink sufficient water about four to five litres a day will have less odour from their sweat, than those who dont drink that much.

If you tend to sweat more than you think you should, increase your intake of fluids water or fresh juices and cut down on your consumption of regular table salt. Also try and keep away from certain vegetables like fenugreek, raw garlic, onions or asparagus as they tend to leave a pungent smell behind in your bodily fluids for a few days.

Moisturise

Just as you need to hydrate the body internally, its important to ensure the skin is soft to touch and feel on the outside. Nothing works more effectively for this, than a heavy-duty body lotion or moisturiser.

Unless its a pre-shower or in-shower product, always applybody lotions after your shower, once the skin has been wiped well and is completely dry. Before applying any cream or lotion, always check the fold areas for any left-over moisture or droplets of water.

Apply a thin, but even layer of lotion all over the body especially the back, arms, and legs.

The best time to target the body is after the pre bedtime shower, so the product seeps into the skin and does its thing, while you sleep.

Remove that dead skin

Just as with the face, its important to exfoliate the dead skin on the body, which can be achieved with the use of a good body scrub.

Generously apply during a shower on the elbows, knuckles and knees to remove the dark or grey scaly skin from these areas. Leaves the body looking buffed and polished.

Soften the skin and add some sheen

Huile De Douche Almond shower oil by LOccitane en Provence

This cleansing and soothing shower gel with almond oil helps to hydrate and nourish the skin all-day-long. It makesyour skin look and feel both smooth and shiny.

To use, apply all over the body, work up a rich lather - then rinse. Perfect for day to day use, especially for date night!

So in June, when a handful of unclothed Indigenous people emerged from the forest in Rondnia state and approached a small hamlet, Franciscato, a Brazilian government official specializing in uncontacted tribes, sprang into action.

His frantic efforts the last few months to keep Rondnias isolated tribes safe, and to try to figure out why they had begun to venture out of the Amazon rainforest, ended on Wednesday when Franciscato was struck in the chest with an arrow and killed.

Colleagues and police investigators believe a member of an uncontacted tribe fired on Franciscato, 56, mistakenly perceiving him as a threat.

Moises Assaup Kampe, 35, a friend of Franciscato who was with him that day, said they had been retracing the footsteps of the tribesmen in the rainforest, following the most recent sighting by villagers in a rural area near the town of Seringueiras.

We were looking for information about where they had come from and trying to see if they had left anything behind, Kampe said.

Suddenly, Franciscato yelped. Kampe watched in horror as his friend yanked out the tip of a 5-foot bamboo arrow that had pierced his chest.

He pulled it out and began running, Kampe said. He ran about 50 meters, passed out and dropped to the ground.

Brazils Amazon rainforest is home to dozens of Indigenous tribes that have chosen to remain in isolation. Since the 1980s, Brazils government has sought to prevent outsiders, including missionaries, from coming into contact with those tribes.

Such encounters in the past have been devastating for Indigenous people, who lack immunity to common pathogens.

Upholding the no-contact policy is the responsibility of the National Indian Foundation, or FUNAI, the federal agency where Franciscato worked for more than three decades.

Its mission has become increasingly hard in recent years as loggers and miners have invaded Indigenous territories in violation of federal law, usually facing no consequences. President Jair Bolsonaro, who favours opening up more of the Amazon to development, has called Indigenous territories archaic and a hindrance to economic growth. He has compared communities living in the forest to animals in a zoo.

Even as FUNAIs budget was slashed, with several of its remote field offices shuttered and its ranks reduced in recent years, Franciscato remained steadfast in his conviction that the last few humans living in isolation deserved protection.

He was an excellent person, Kampe said. Everything he did was motivated by a desire to protect isolated communities and uphold their right to a dignified life.

Ivaneide Cardozo, an Indigenous rights activist in Rondnia, said she and Franciscato often spoke about the dangers of what they both regarded as a labor of love. Franciscato, she said, feared that he could be killed by loggers, who are frequently armed, or by a tribesman, if he were mistaken for an invader.

In June, when Franciscato got word that a handful of isolated tribesmen had approached a ranch, he devised a plan to keep them safe. The possibility that one of those people could be exposed to the coronavirus and spread it among relatives was a worst-case scenario. So Franciscato pleaded with villagers in the area to avoid close contact with the tribesmen at all cost.

Im going to do everything in my power to protect those Indigenous people and Im not going to allow them to make contact, Cardozo recalled him telling her.

But he saw it a daunting task, she said, since Franciscato had effectively become a solo operation tracking several tribes in a vast area. The problem is Im all alone, I dont have a team and I need people, Cardozo said he had told her recently.

Cardozo said Franciscato was tireless as he studied the tribes from a distance. The work entails getting close enough to gather clues about how these communities are faring by studying their movement, their diet and any tools they leave behind.

He made a note of every single thing, Cardozo said. Even the weather.

FUNAIs president, Marcelo Xavier, called him an exemplary public servant. He dedicated more than 30 years to the protection of isolated Indigenous people, Xavier said in a video message.

When the group emerged from the forest in June, villagers said the tribesmen left a slab of meat and took a chicken from a ranch. That was interpreted as an amicable exchange.

When Franciscato came within eyesight of those tribesmen a few days later, he gestured to them that they should return to the forest, Cardozo said. He believed that was the safest course as long as a highly infectious pandemic was rippling across Brazil.

That fear is what motivated him to rush back to the field this week after hearing that five naked tribesmen had emerged from the jungle in another area of Rondnia, walking in a V-shaped formation.

Dhuliana Pereira, 18, was gathering wood near her house when the men approached carrying bows and arrows.

My father started screaming, she said. We didnt know what their reaction would be.

A few hours later, Franciscato came by and interviewed all the villagers about what they had seen. Then he set out into the woods, tracing fresh footprints.

A few minutes later, Pereira saw Franciscatos body on a wheelbarrow, which friends used to carry him to a police vehicle that rushed him to the hospital.

He looked unconscious, she said. I saw no signs of life.

Probiotics are beneficial for your health in several ways. These can help you fight different multiple different digestive issues. Read here to know how probiotics are beneficial in fighting acid reflux.

Probiotics can help you maintain healthy gut balance

Acid reflux is a common condition that causes burning sensation and pain. In this condition, the acid content of the stomach flows up into the esophagus into the gullet. It is also known as heartburn. Obesity, smoking, unhealthy eating habit, too much caffeine consumption, low physical activity and certain medications can trigger this condition. Several home remedies are often recommended to fight this condition effectively. One of the effective home remedies suggested to fight acid reflux is adding probiotics to your diet. Probiotics are loaded with healthy bacteria extremely beneficial for your gut health. Here's the link between the consumption of probiotics and acid reflux.

Dr. Veerendra Sandur explains, "Probiotics are essentially live micro-organisms that increase the good or friendly bacteria in the digestive system which leads to improved digestion and other health benefits. Research has shown that probiotics could help control gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome in some people."

Over-eating, eating spicy, oily foods, alcohol, sleeping/lying down immediately after eating, eating in a hurry, chronic stress, etc. can all cause heartburn or acid reflux. Imbalance in the gut bacteria can lead to an improper breakdown of food and an increase in intestinal gas, bloating and create unpleasant acid reflux.

#HealthBytes: Have bad breath? These tips can help

11 Sep 2020: #HealthBytes: Have bad breath? These tips can help

Bad breath is a rather common problem caused by a number of factors.

Also known as Halitosis, bad breath typically originates when bacteria grow on bits of food stuck in your teeth, which release foul-smelling sulfur compounds.

Other possible causes include infections, poor oral hygiene, diabetes complications, and renal failure.

But worry not! Some simple lifestyle changes can easily fix this issue.

Hygiene: First and foremost step: Maintain good dental hygiene

The first step for a good dental hygiene is to brush and floss regularly.

Apart from trapped food, the sticky build-up on your teeth called plaque also collects bacteria that cause bad breath.

Brush your teeth at least two times each day, and floss at least once.

Don't overdo things, though. Brushing too hard can wear down your teeth, making them vulnerable to decay.

Hydrate: Stay hydrated, aim for minimum 8 glasses of water daily

Dry mouth often causes bad breath because saliva plays a very important role in keeping your mouth clean.

Without it, bacteria thrive. This is why breath is typically worse in the morning.

Prevent the dryness by staying hydrated. Drinking water, not caffeinated or sugary drinks, throughout the day will help encourage saliva production.

Aim for at least eight glasses of water per day.

Tongue: Brushing your tongue is must; use your brush or scraper

Cleaning your tongue can effectively decrease Halitosis-causing compounds.

These compounds form on your tongue when bacteria and amino acids combine, emitting an unpleasant smell.

People who have a coated tongue from a significant overgrowth of bacteria may benefit from using a toothbrush that has a built-in tongue cleaner.

If your brush can't reach the back of your tongue, try a tongue scraper.

Mouth rinse: Consider using a mouth rinse; it suppresses bacteria growth

Keep in mind that mouth rinse alone is not an effective remedy unless used in addition to regular brushing and flossing.

Other than using store-bought mouth rinse, you can try a mix of water and a few drops of peppermint oil.

Rinsing your mouth with black or green tea can also help, since they suppress the growth of bacteria that cause mouth odor.

Diet: Diet: The foods to avoid and the ones that help

Foods like raw onion or garlic, when ingested and excreted by the lungs, cause Halitosis, so minimize their intake.

Avoiding acidic foods or high-fructose foods cuts down on bad breath too, since acids and sugars increase production of odor-causing bacteria.

Include whole grains, dark green and orange vegetables, fruits and protein-rich food in your diet.

They can curb intestinal upset and increase saliva production.

MILLIONS of people suffer from chronic health problems ranging from heart disease and diabetes to persistent tiredness, pain, depression and anxiety.

While numerous factors can play a role in why we develop such conditions, nurse practitioner and author Hanna Purdy says lifestyle specifically what we eat is a key part of the picture.

A specialist in public health nursing, Purdy has written several books about the effects of our diets. Almost always with any chronic condition, there is something in our lifestyle causing it, she says. When digging deeper, it is obvious that one of the most important, if not the main, cause is the food we eat.

She believes the crux of this is processed food, sugar and excess carbohydrates. It seems sugar and processed food, and the hormonal imbalance and inflammation they cause in our body, are the main reasons why so many of us are unwell, says Purdy, whose new book is focused on insulin resistance.

Most people associate this with diabetes, but that's not necessarily the case. As the National Severe Insulin Resistance Service explains, people with severe insulin resistance are those whose bodies respond least well to insulin. Although many people with severe insulin resistance will go on to develop diabetes, it states that severe insulin resistance is not the same as diabetes. However, having insulin levels that are too high may still be associated with a range of health problems.

Here, Purdy outlines the symptoms of insulin resistance, and how it can be avoided

:: What is insulin resistance?

Insulin is an essential hormone which plays many roles in the metabolism, explains Purdy, enabling the transfer of glucose from the blood into cells for energy production, and keeping blood glucose levels stable. In insulin resistance, the cells aren't responding to the effects of insulin like they should, she says, explaining that the main cause of this is the over-consumption of sugary and starchy foods, as well as eating too frequently.

We have insulin in our body all the time, which leads to cells developing resistance to the effects. A consequence is that the pancreas produces an abnormally large amount of insulin to try to overcome the resistance of the cells, as an attempt to keep blood-sugar levels stable. This leads to hyperinsulinemia' a state of continuously high levels of insulin, also known as metabolic syndrome'.

:: What health problems can be caused by insulin resistance?

Too much insulin has many ill-effects, says Purdy, ranging from weight gain to chronic inflammation and pain. We put on weight because insulin stores the excess glucose we eat as fat, she explains. Because of this, if there's too much insulin, the task of losing weight is almost impossible, as the opposite hormone glucagon no longer has any effect, therefore fat-burning isn't possible.

Insulin resistance is known to cause chronic in?ammation, which effects all tissues around the body and can lead to many chronic symptoms and illnesses, from chronic aches and pains, dental problems and osteoporosis, to type 2 diabetes and heart disease, she adds.

Polycystic ovary syndrome [PCOS] is a well-known complication of insulin resistance, but many other hormonal problems are also linked to it, such as thyroid problems and early puberty. Insulin resistance can also be a big problem during menopause, when hormones are in turmoil already.

Later in life, insulin resistance has also been linked to Alzheimer's disease, adds Purdy. The brain is affected by this condition just like any other organ. Alzheimer's disease has been referred to as type 3 diabetes' diabetes of the brain. In addition, we also know many other neurological problems have been associated with insulin resistance.

It isn't just a concern for older people, either babies can have insulin resistance before they're even born. During pregnancy, too much glucose in the mother's body can cause the pancreas of the foetus to release increasing amounts of insulin, explains Purdy, meaning these babies suffer from hyperinsulinemia before they're even born, causing changes in their gene expression, in?ammation and increasing size of the baby and the placenta. This increases the risk of metabolic symptoms later in life.

:: What are the symptoms of insulin resistance?

Purdy says the most common symptom is excess weight and/or excess fat around the middle. Low blood-sugar levels, which cause crashing between meals, is also a common sign, as well as tiredness and low energy levels, irritability, mood swings, food cravings, low immunity and frequent infections, snoring, many skin problems, in?ammatory conditions, raised blood pressure and water retention.

Insulin resistance is such a common condition and causes so many problems around the body, that if we suffer from any symptoms, it's very likely to be at least one of the major root causes, says Purdy. For this reason, it would be extremely important to reverse insulin resistance to get better with any condition.

:: What's the best way tackle insulin resistance?

Purdy says the key actions to reverse insulin resistance are to reduce sugar and carbohydrate intake (always check with your doctor or dietitian before making any major diet changes, especially if you already have chronic health issues). She also says to avoid grains such as bread, pasta and cereals, which break down to sugar, and processed food. Plus, don't eat too often (maximum three times a day), as this often disturbs the balance between insulin and glucagon, she adds.

In terms of what you do want to do, she says eat good quality food, including organic vegetables, herbs and berries; maintain a healthy gut through consuming probiotic-rich fermented foods, plus fruit and vegetables containing prebiotics, such as berries, apples, cabbage, broccoli, onions and garlic, and omega-3 found in food like oily fish.

Regular exercise promotes muscle gain, which aids metabolism, and while any exercise is beneficial, studies show high intensity interval training (HIIT) in particular is very good for improving insulin sensitivity in cells.

Alongside diet, Purdy says it's also important to manage stress ef?ciently, get good sleep, stop smoking/vaping, and avoid alcohol.

These measures will reduce the amount of insulin in the body, which results in the reduction of symptoms very quickly, and we burn excess fat, including around the liver, says Purdy. All these measures also reduce chronic in?ammation in the body very effectively, and boost the immune system.

:: Is diet the only cause of insulin resistance?

While Purdy stresses the most important measures to prevent or reduce insulin resistance are dietary, she says there are other causes of insulin resistance as well. One of the important ones is chronic stress, she says. High levels of stress hormones affect the overall hormonal balance, including insulin, so constant stress can actually sabotage our efforts to reverse insulin resistance, even if our diet is reasonably healthy.

:: Could It Be Insulin Resistance? by Hanna Purdy is published by Hammersmith Books, priced 14.99.
