Time-restricted eating improved the health of firefighters by reducing the risks of heart disease linked with shift work, according to a new study.

Working long shifts, up to 24 hours at a stretch, could be behind a number of health issues, including higher rates of diabetes and heart attacks.

But firefighters who stuck to a time-restricted eating planwherein the time of day determines when a person can eat, in this case 10 hours dailysaw those risks reduced.

Researchers say that their findings, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, could help others who work long hours, such as military personnel, nurses, transportation drivers, as well as new parents, whose schedules go awry when caring for a new baby.

Little previous research had been done to identify lifestyle interventions that could help prevent the health risks of working shifts.

But a new American study found that time-restricted eating (TRE) could be safely practiced in shift workers.

The research team also showed that TRE provided benefits to participants who had indications of cardiometabolic disease, a group of common but often preventable conditions including heart attack, stroke, diabetes, insulin resistance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Called the Healthy Heroes Study, the intervention focused on firefighters in San Diego, California.

Shift work is much more common than many people think, said co-corresponding author Professor Satchidananda Panda, of the Salk Institute.

Not only does shift work contribute to an increased burden of disease in our society, but it makes it hard for people with existing conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease to manage them.

Co-corresponding author Professor Pam Taub, a cardiologist at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, said, Overall, firefighters are a pretty healthy group of people, but we found that for those who had underlying cardiometabolic risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and hyperglycemia, there was some benefit to TRE, especially in terms of improvement in glucose levels and blood pressure.

Professors Panda and Taub have collaborated on research into TRE for several years. In January 2020, they published a study in Cell Metabolism that found that restricting the time of eating to 10 hours a day reduced body weight and improved blood pressure and cholesterol levels in people with metabolic syndrome.

In the current study, the team recruited San Diego firefighters, who work 24-hour shifts. There were 137 firefighters ultimately enrolled in the study; 70 followed TRE, eating all of their meals within a 10-hour time window, and 67 were in the control group.

All the participants were encouraged to follow a Mediterranean diet that was rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. The subjects were followed for 12 weeks.

A barrier to conducting research studies with shift workers has been the subjects inability to attend the lab during regular business hours. The researchers got around that by going to the fire stations to apply wearable devices on the participants to collect their activity, sleep, and blood glucose levels.

They also customized an app that allowed the firefighters to log their food and sleep and answer study surveys; the app also enabled the researchers to send study materials and to guide the participants on following the recommended lifestyle.

The researchers found that the time-restricted eating pattern was both safe and feasible, as participants didnt report any problems with concentration, reaction times, or other issues and their quality of life generally improved.

Even those who were healthy with no underlying cardiometabolic risk factors had improvements in quality of life and in VLDL, which is a form of bad cholesterol, said Taub.

The research team wants to conduct similar studies with healthcare workers.

Panda added, Humans have been living with circadian rhythms for at least 200,000 years, and these rhythms clearly have a profound effect on us.

Shift workers, whether they are astronauts or custodians, are vital to our society. Its time to think about how we might help them improve their health.

Doctors and researchers are always thinking about the magic pill that can cure or reduce disease.

Our study showed that shift workers with high blood pressure, blood sugar, or cholesterol can benefit from a simple lifestyle intervention called time-restricted eating.

Ramadan 2023: Fasting may not be the best for people with diabetes. Here are 5 tips for diabetics to fast safely and avoid complications like dehydration, low or high blood sugar levels.

Ramadan is considered the holiest month, according to the Islamic calendar. People offer prayers and fast for a period of one month to celebrate it. While observing fast is a good ritual that not only shows devotion but also keeps your health in check. However, fasting is not one of the best things for people with diabetes. For people with diabetes, the long hours of fasting mean that their diabetes management regimen needs significant adjustments. If people with diabetes wish to fast, they must consult their doctors first so as to discuss a good plan that includes dietary and activity-related requirements along with medication and self-monitoring schedules.

Here are a few tips to consider besides a doctors advice for safe and healthy fasting during Ramadan:

Diabetics should weigh the risks of fasting to avoid complications. It can lead to a lot of risks.Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) may occur especially late in the afternoon just before Iftar. One may experience symptoms such as dizziness, irritability, excessive sweating, fast heartbeats, and shaking.

Severe hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels) might occur after Sehri/Suhoor and Iftar. Symptoms to watch out for are dry mouth, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, shortness of breath, and confusion.

If you notice any symptoms, you may need to break the fast. Doctor consultation is vital to know about how to manage these risks.

Monitor blood sugar regularly as advised by the doctor. This can be easily done at home with the help of a glucometer. It is likely that the doctor will recommend measuring blood sugar in the morning at the time of Sehri, at noon, just before Iftar and 2 hours after Iftar. One may be required to break the fast at any point in time if the blood sugar is out of range. Self-monitoring of blood sugar not only helps avert the risk of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, but it also gives the doctor an understanding of whether the given medication and its dose are working, or if they need to be modified for optimal blood sugar control.

The daily calorie intake that the body requires needs to be balanced and evenly divided between Sehri and Iftar to avoid hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. Foods such as whole grains, cereals, and beans have a low glycaemic index and release energy slowly. These can help to prevent sudden fluctuations in the blood sugar level. A nutritionist can help calculate the daily quantity of calories for each meal and the type of food to be consumed.

Dehydration is particularly a concern this year as Ramadan has arrived during the hotter months in most parts of India. This could manifest as reduced urination, dark urine, fatigue, dizziness, and confusion.

Make sure to include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and salads during Sehri and Iftar. Avoid desserts and foods rich in sugar and saturated fats. Use small amounts of oil when cooking, have plenty of water and avoid caffeinated and sweetened drinks. Consult a nutritionist to maintain a healthy diet which will ensure safe fasting.

Moderate exercise such as walking or jogging is encouraged but ensure a good fluid intake. The doctor may recommend checking blood sugar levels before and after exercise. Avoid heavy exercise during fasting hours. Consult a professional to make sure you are getting the right amount of exercise.

As shown in recent national news coverage, GLP-1 is one of a group of therapies that is bringing excellent results using proteins found in the body to jump-start and sustain significant weight loss. The solution works by safely elevating levels of specific proteins found in the body, which tend to diminish the appetite after consuming food. This approach is newsworthy because it solves most people's long-standing issues with weight loss. This discomfort comes from severe hunger and energy loss when suddenly limiting caloric intake.

GLP-1 therapy for weight loss has been gaining traction lately due to its remarkable success rate. Using naturally occurring proteins in the body, this therapy jump-starts and sustains healthy weight loss while avoiding the discomfort typically associated with extreme caloric restriction. It works by safely elevating levels of specific proteins, which signal the body when to stop feeling hungry after eating a meal. This makes it easier for individuals to stick to their weight loss plan, as they don't risk experiencing sharp drops in energy or uncomfortable hunger pangs. GLP-1 is a peptide-based protein that allows the digestive system to experience sustained satiety. Cacti have long been a staple in the diets of many cultures, prized for their nutritional benefits and unique flavors. But have you ever wondered what could happen if you eat too much cactus? In this article, well dive into the potential consequences of overindulging in these spiky plants and provide tips on how to enjoy them safely and responsibly.

Lets get started!

Although cacti can be a nutritious and delicious addition to your diet, overindulging in them can lead to uncomfortable gastrointestinal issues. Lets take a closer look at some of these problems and how you can address them.

Eating too much cactus can sometimes lead to unpleasant gastrointestinal issues, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. This might be due to the high fiber content, which can cause your digestive system to work harder than usual.

On the flip side, overconsumption of cacti can also cause constipation and bloating. The high fiber content can make it difficult for your body to break down and digest the cactus, leading to these uncomfortable symptoms.

If you find yourself experiencing gastrointestinal issues after eating too much cactus, consider taking some over-the-counter remedies like antacids or gas relief medications. Drinking plenty of water can also help alleviate these symptoms. But remember, the best way to prevent these issues is to consume cacti in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

While cactus is generally safe for most people to consume, some individuals might experience allergic reactions when eating too much of it. Lets explore the symptoms and causes of these reactions, along with some remedies and prevention strategies.

Allergic reactions to cacti can manifest in various ways, such as:

These symptoms might be caused by an individuals sensitivity to certain compounds found in cacti or a histamine response triggered by overconsumption.

If you suspect youre experiencing an allergic reaction to cacti, consult a medical professional for proper evaluation and treatment.Over-the-counter antihistamines may help alleviate mild symptoms, but more severe reactions may require emergency medical attention.Always follow your doctors advice and recommendations.

To minimize the risk of allergic reactions, start by consuming small amounts of cactus and monitor your bodys response. If you dont experience any adverse reactions, you can gradually increase your intake. But if you notice any symptoms of an allergic reaction, stop consuming cactus immediately and consult a healthcare professional for guidance.

Cacti are known for their water-storing abilities, which can be beneficial in maintaining hydration. But overindulging in cactus can sometimes lead to hydration imbalances, which can affect your overall health. So lets discuss dehydration, overhydration, and electrolyte imbalances caused by cactus overconsumption.

While cacti can help maintain hydration, eating excessive amounts might lead to the opposite problem dehydration. This can happen if the high fiber content in cactus causes diarrhea, leading to a loss of fluids.

On the other hand, consuming too much cactus might cause overhydration, as your body struggles to process the excess water content.

In addition to affecting your hydration levels, consuming too much cactus can also lead to electrolyte imbalances. This is because cactus contains minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium, which can be thrown off balance by overconsumption.

If you experience hydration imbalances due to cactus overconsumption, adjust your water and electrolyte intake. For dehydration, drink more water and consider using oral rehydration solutions. In the case of overhydration, reduce your water and cactus intake, and consult a healthcare professional if symptoms persist. To prevent electrolyte imbalances, maintain a balanced diet with various nutrient-rich foods.

Cactus can be a great source of vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients. But relying too heavily on cactus in your diet can lead to nutrient deficiencies, as it may not provide all the nutrients your body needs.Lets explore the potential vitamin and mineral imbalances caused by cactus overconsumption and their effects on overall health.

While cactus contains many beneficial nutrients, if you eat too much cactus you might trigger an imbalance in your vitamin and mineral intake. For instance, cactus is rich in certain nutrients like vitamin C and potassium but lacks others, such as vitamin B12 and iron. Therefore, consuming too much cactus might cause you to miss out on these essential nutrients, leading to deficiencies.

Nutrient deficiencies can have a wide range of effects on your overall health, depending on the specific nutrients you lack. For instance, a vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to anemia, while a lack of iron can cause fatigue and weaken your immune system.Maintain a balanced diet to ensure youre getting all the essential nutrients for optimal health.

If you suspect youre experiencing nutrient deficiencies due to cactus overconsumption, consult a healthcare professional for guidance. They can help identify deficiencies and recommend appropriate dietary changes or supplements to correct the imbalances.

Remember, the key to preventing nutrient deficiencies is to consume a varied and balanced diet. It must include various foods, including fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains.

While cacti can be a healthy addition to your diet, consider how they might interact with any medications youre taking. In some cases, consuming too much cactus can lead to potential drug interactions, affecting the efficacy of your medications or cause side effects.

Lets discuss some common drug interactions associated with cactus overconsumption and how you can address them.

Cacti have been known to help regulate blood sugar levels. This can be beneficial for diabetics. But if youre already taking medications to control your blood sugar, overconsumption of cactus might cause your levels to drop too low, leading to hypoglycemia.

Cactus has diuretic properties, which means it can increase urine production and help flush out excess fluids from your body.If you eat too much cactus while youre taking diuretics or blood pressure medications, that might cause your blood pressure to drop too low or lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

If youre taking medications and are concerned about potential interactions with cactus, consult your healthcare professional. They can help you determine if consuming cactus is safe and advise on the appropriate amount.

Its crucial to follow their recommendations and monitor your health closely, making any necessary adjustments to your diet or medications as needed.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are crucial periods for both mother and child. Maintaining a balanced diet is essential for their health.Although cacti can offer some nutritional benefits, overconsumption during pregnancy and breastfeeding might pose certain risks.

Lets examine the limited research on cactus safety during these periods and discuss recommendations for expecting and nursing mothers.

There is currently limited research on the safety of cactus overconsumption during pregnancy and breastfeeding. While moderate consumption might be safe, excessive intake could lead to gastrointestinal issues, nutrient imbalances, or other health concerns for both mother and child.

Due to the limited research on cactus safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding, its best for expecting and nursing mothers to exercise caution.Consume cactus in moderation and pay close attention to your bodys response. Its also essential to maintain a balanced and nutrient-rich diet to support the health of both mother and baby.

If you experience any issues related to cactus overconsumption during pregnancy or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare professional for guidance. They can help determine the problems cause and recommend appropriate dietary changes or treatments.Remember, moderation and a balanced diet are key to maintaining your health and your babys well-being during these important life stages.

Your liver and kidneys play a vital role in detoxifying and filtering harmful substances from your body. While consuming cactus can offer numerous health benefits, if you eat too much cactus that might affect liver and kidney function.

Lets discuss the potential stress on these organs due to cactus overconsumption and the importance of monitoring your intake, especially if you have pre-existing conditions.

Overconsumption of cacti might place extra stress on your liver and kidneys as they work to process and eliminate the excess nutrients and compounds found in cacti. This additional burden could potentially lead to a decrease in the overall efficiency of these organs, which might be a concern for individuals with pre-existing liver or kidney conditions.

If you have a pre-existing liver or kidney condition, be cautious with your cactus intake. Consuming excessive amounts might exacerbate your condition or negatively affect the effectiveness of your medications.Always consult your healthcare professional for personalized guidance on cactus consumption and potential risks.

If you suspect that cactus overconsumption is impacting your liver or kidney function, seek advice from a healthcare professional. They can help determine if your consumption habits are causing issues and recommend appropriate dietary changes or treatments.

As always, moderation and a balanced diet are essential to maintaining your overall health and supporting the proper functioning of your liver and kidneys.

Before we wrap up, lets take a moment to explore the world of edible cacti.Several types of cacti can be consumed safely and provide various flavors and textures to your culinary creations.Heres a brief overview of some popular edible cacti to help you better appreciate their diversity and potential in your diet.

Can those with Type 2 diabetes eat fruits? This continues to be a confusing area for most diabetics trying to keep their blood sugar levels in check. Truth be told, much of the scepticism stems from the supposition that fruits include their concentrated juices. Whole fruits, which are rich in fibres the bulk of which delays digestion, food breakdown and the release of glucose into the bloodstream must be included in a diabetics diet. Fibres add satiety and tame your cravings. Juices, on the contrary, can raise blood sugar levels because of their high sugar and low fibre content. Besides, fruits should be on everybodys diet given that they come packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, taking care of all our micro-nutrient requirements. Taken together, all of them protect the human body from the oxidative stress of free radicals and boost immunity levels, says Dr Seema Gulati, National Diabetes, Obesity, and Cholesterol Foundation (NDOC) Centre for Nutrition Research.

In fact, latest research, she says, has confirmed that those who consume one serving of whole fruit per day be they blueberries, grapes and apples have a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Another study suggests that if you already have Type 2 diabetes, eating whole fruits can help control your blood sugar.

But there are some ground rules. Those living with Type 2 diabetes can safely have one fruit every day. But the fruitshould be had on an empty stomach, not as an add-on to a meal or as an addition to other carbohydrates. This is the commonest mistake that many diabetics make. Have the fruit when you are at your hungriest, usually after you wake up. Also make sure that this single fruit becomes a part of your total carbohydrate allowance for the day. So, including the fruit would mean eliminating other calorie-rich foods to make way for it. Also, having a fruit after a full meal will increase blood sugar sharply as it would increase the total calorie load of that given meal, says Dr Gulati. If not in the morning, then a fruit can be had as a snack when hunger pangs kick in between large meals. Have it when you are really hungry.Mix the fruit with nuts, seeds and other proteins like yogurt for instance, she adds.

Of course, portion control matters too. Some fruits ought to be had as a lesser portion given theirglycaemic index (GI). As you know, the higher the score, the faster the absorption and the consequent rise in blood sugar. Usually, we say that one serving offruitshould contain 15 grams of carbohydrates and the total daily fruit intake should not exceed 30 gm. Otherwise, diabetics must know that low GIfruits(GI 20-49) include apples, avocados, cherries, guava, peaches, pears, and strawberries. Medium GIfruits(GI 50-69) include figs, grapes and oranges. Fully ripe bananas, mangoes and dates are examples of high GIfruits, says Dr Gulati.

But even when consuming low GI foods, we need to worry about the glycaemic load.Even one unit of glycaemic load approximates the effect of eating one gram of glucose. So dont gorge on low GI food. This is why the portion size becomes important. The culprit is always total calories, she explains.

Whole fruits are packed with natural sugar, which is sugar all the same. Thats why portion size becomes very important. As per the guidelines recommended by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), if a diabetic person is not allergic to any fruit then they may consume any fruit depending upon its glucose level and portion size. Besides, whole fruits are abundant in potassium and magnesium that help in regulating blood sugar levels, says Dr Tushar Tayal, Consultant, Internal Medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram.

He suggests a few options: Watermelon has a GI of 72 but provides antioxidants and keeps the body well-hydrated. As a diabetic, you need to have a small portion and take out something from your diet to make way for it. Strawberries, apart from being a good source of Vitamin C, folate, magnesium and potassium, have a GI of 41, suitable for diabetics. Apple, with a GI of 39, is also good for weight loss due to the presence of fibre and vitamins, and is recommended for diabetics. Some more fruits with low glycaemic index include berries, citrus fruits, cherries, guava, unripe bananas, kiwis, grapefruits and pears. High GI fruits like mangoes, grapes, ripe bananas, watermelon and pineapple should be consumed in moderation. All you have to do is pick the right fruit.

With so many options available on the market, it can be difficult to know which weight loss pills actually work.

Thats why weve taken the guesswork out of the equation and ranked the best weight loss pills available based on a combination of scientific evidence, user reviews, and expert opinions.

Here are a few factors we considered:

1. Safety first!

When it comes to weight loss pills, safety is our number one concern. We have only included diet pills that have been approved by the FDA, which means they have undergone rigorous testing to ensure that they are safe for consumption.

We also looked at any reported side effects to ensure that they were minimal and not harmful.

2. Effective ingredients

We carefully analyzed the ingredients and dosages of each weight loss pill to ensure that they are backed by scientific research and are effective in aiding weight loss.

For example, some ingredients that are effective in aiding weight loss include caffeine, green tea extract, and glucomannan.

3. Real-world results

While scientific studies are important, we also wanted to see how well each weight loss pill works in practice. Thats why we scoured customer reviews to see how people are using these products and what kind of results they are getting. We looked for weight loss pills that consistently receive positive reviews and have a track record of success.

4. Price matters

We understand that weight loss supplements can be expensive, so we made sure to include options that are reasonably priced and offer good value for money. We looked for weight loss supplements that are affordable without sacrificing quality or effectiveness.

5. Brand reputation is key

When it comes to weight loss pills, you want to make sure youre buying from a reputable company that produces high-quality products. We considered the overall reputation of the companies that produce the weight loss pills to ensure that youre getting a product that is trustworthy and reliable.

We looked for companies that have a good track record of producing high-quality products and have a positive reputation among consumers.

When taken correctly, weight loss pills can offer several benefits to those looking to lose weight. Lets go over some of the benefits.

This is often achieved through the use of appetite suppressants, which work by reducing the signals that are sent to the brain that trigger hunger. By reducing appetite, people may find it easier to stick to a healthy diet and reduce the amount of food they eat, which can ultimately lead to weight loss.

Some eight loss pills contain thermogenic ingredients, which can increase metabolism and help the body to burn more calories even when at rest. By increasing metabolism, weight loss pills can help people to burn more calories and lose weight more quickly.

Many weight loss pills contain caffeine or other stimulants that can increase energy levels and improve mental alertness. By providing an energy boost, weight loss pills can help people to exercise more frequently and for longer periods.

Some weight loss pills contain fat blockers that can help people to lose weight without having to drastically change their diet.

By regulating blood sugar levels, weight loss pills can help people to reduce their risk of developing these health problems.

We will discuss the different types of weight loss pills to help you understand their benefits and choose the right one for your weight loss journey.

1. Fat burners

Fat burners work by increasing your bodys metabolism, causing it to burn more calories than usual. These pills contain active ingredients that raise your bodys temperature, leading to increased metabolic rates.

This type of weight loss pill is particularly effective for people who are physically active and exercise regularly. Some of the common ingredients found in fat burners include caffeine, green tea extract, and yohimbine.

2. Carb blockers

Carb blockers work by preventing your body from digesting and absorbing carbohydrates. These weight loss pills contain active ingredients that target the digestive enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates, preventing it from breaking them down into glucose.

Carb blockers are particularly helpful for people who consume a lot of carbohydrates in their diet. Some of the common ingredients found in carb blockers include white kidney bean extract and green tea extract.

3. Thermogenics

Thermogenics work by increasing your bodys core temperature, leading to increased metabolic rates and calorie burn. These pills contain active ingredients that stimulate the bodys sympathetic nervous system, causing an increase in heart rate and energy levels.

Thermogenics are particularly helpful for people who want to boost their energy levels and metabolism. Some of the common ingredients found in thermogenic include caffeine, green tea extract, and capsaicin.

4. Appetite suppressants

Appetite suppressants work by reducing your appetite, making you feel fuller for longer periods, and reducing your food intake. These pills contain active ingredients that target the hunger hormone in your body, causing you to feel less hungry.

Being pregnant means forgoing some of your favorite food and beverages in order to keep both you and baby as safe and healthy as possible. This is especially true when it comes to anything caffeinated. While you dont have to avoid caffeine completely when youre pregnant, it is recommended to limit your intake. Most people are quick to cut out coffee from their diet, but that general rule of thumb applies to some teas also, like green tea. You might wonder if green tea is safe during pregnancy, or if its something you should wait to drink after you give birth.

Medical experts give green tea during pregnancy the green light, as long as its consumed in moderation. It is safe in limited quantities, says Sunny Soroosh, certified nurse midwife and nurse practitioner. Green tea might even have some benefits that are worth considering when you decide whether or not you want to have caffeine during pregnancy.

Green tea has a slew of health benefits for non-pregnant and pregnant people. High in antioxidants with a low sugar content, it can improve wellnesss, says Joy Cornthwaite, registered dietician, an OB-GYN nutritionist with UTHealth Houton and UT Physicians. Green tea contains natural chemicals called catechins, and studies have shown that the specific compound epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) found in green tea can decrease inflammation and lower cholesterol, as well as promote heart health.

Green tea also contains an amino acid called L-theanine, and studies have shown that this can reduce stress and anxiety, which might be especially helpful during pregnancy. Some research has also shown that caffeine can improve brain function, mood, reaction time, and memory.

Green tea contains a decent amount of caffeine almost as much as espresso and some brewed coffees. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), a moderate amount of caffeine consumption (defined as less than 200 milligrams per day) will not cause miscarriage or preterm birth, and an 8-ounce cup of green tea contains approximately 30-50 mL of caffeine.

The amount of caffeine in green tea can vary depending on type and steep time, so be sure to keep track of how much caffeine is in your green tea. You should also keep track of how much caffeine youve had from other sources, like coffee, chocolate, or other foods.

Most pregnant people can safely drink 200mg of caffeine daily during pregnancy, says Kelly Johnson-Arbor, MD, FACEP, FUHM, FACM, medical toxicologist, co-medical director, and interim executive director from the National Poison Center. However, because some people are more sensitive than others to the effects of caffeine, this recommendation may not be the same for everyone. Be sure to ask your OB-GYN how much caffeine you should have during your pregnancy.

While green tea has plenty of benefits, it also might have some risks. Green tea absorbs folic acid, which is a necessary nutrient in pregnancy because it helps to prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida, Soroosh says. This nutrient is especially important in the first trimester, when many of the neurological structures are developing. She points out that, theoretically, green tea could prevent your body from absorbing enough folic acid and could cause neural tube defects (something that this 2012 research found), but you would have to drink a lot of it for that to happen. This is one reason people may avoid green tea completely or at least during the first trimester.

There are also some risks associated with having too much caffeine during pregnancy. In 2021, the National Institute of Health reported that pregnant women who have even as little as half a cup of coffee a day on average gave birth to slightly smaller babies than pregnant women who did not consume caffeine. Small birth size can put infants at a higher risk for conditions like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes later in life.

Some studies have also shown that consuming high amounts of caffeine during pregnancy can be associated with negative fetal outcomes, including miscarriage. Caffeine can cross the placenta, but the fetus cannot metabolize it, Johnson-Arbor says. In addition, the bodys metabolism of caffeine is slower in pregnant people compared with non-pregnant individuals, resulting in increased fetal exposure to the drug.

Lastly, Cornthwaite notes that some studies have found some correlation between an increased risk of dehydration, undesirable changes in blood pressure, low birth weight, and miscarriage in pregnant women who drink more than 200mg of caffeine daily.

At the end of the day, green tea is considered safe for pregnant people to drink, as long as they have it in moderation (less than 200mg of caffeine each day). That said, it does come with some risks that are worth considering, and its always something to speak with your OB-GYN about. Whether or not you drink green tea during pregnancy is a personal decision.

Several myths about eggs have been circulating for years, and many people still believe them. However, these myths can be harmful and may prevent individuals from enjoying the many benefits that eggs have to offer.

Eggs are a staple food in many households around the world, and for good reason. They are a great source of protein, vitamins, and minerals that are essential for good health. However, myths about eggs have led some people to avoid them or limit their consumption.

In this article, we will explore some of the most common myths about eggs and provide evidence-based information to debunk them. By the end of this article, you will have a better understanding of the true benefits of eggs and why they should be a part of a healthy diet.

One of the most common myths about eggs is that they are bad for your heart health because of their high cholesterol content. However, research shows that moderate egg consumption does not increase the risk of heart disease in healthy individuals. In fact, eggs are a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals that can support heart health.

One of the myths surrounding eggs is that egg yolks are unhealthy and should be avoided. However, egg yolks are rich in nutrients such as choline, vitamin D, and lutein, which are essential for good health. It's important to note that the yolk contains more nutrients than the egg white, so it's beneficial to eat the whole egg.

One of the myths about eggs is that many people believe brown eggs are more nutritious than white eggs, but this is not true. The color of the eggshell is determined by the breed of the hen and has no impact on the nutritional value of the egg. What matters is the quality of the hen's diet and living conditions.

Some people avoid eggs because they believe consuming them will make them gain weight. However, eggs are a great food to include in a healthy diet as they are low in calories and high in protein, which can help you feel fuller for longer and support weight loss.

One common myth is that eggs should only be eaten in the morning. However, eggs are a versatile food that can be eaten at any time of the day. They can be boiled, poached, scrambled, or fried and can be used in a variety of dishes.

Many people believe that eggs should be washed before storing them to remove any bacteria on the surface. However, this can actually increase the risk of contamination as washing can remove the protective coating on the eggshell. It's best to store eggs in their original carton in the refrigerator and only wash them before using them.

Some people believe that eating raw eggs is safe, but this is not true. Raw eggs can contain harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, which can cause foodborne illness. It's important to cook eggs thoroughly to kill any bacteria that may be present.

There are many myths about eggs that you should not believe. Eggs are a healthy and nutritious food that can be enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Don't be afraid to include eggs in your meals and experiment with different cooking methods. Remember to handle and store eggs safely to reduce the risk of contamination.

Alternate-day fasting, as the name suggests, involves fasting every other day. So, if you were to follow this fasting schedule, you would eat normally one day and fast the next day.

The alternate-day fasting protocol has gained popularity largely due to the research of Krista Varady, Ph.D., a professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois, Chicago. In her book The Every Other Day Diet, Varady describes how you can lose weight by eating what you wanthalf of the time.

The idea behind alternate-day fasting is that instead of having to limit your calories every day, as many diet regimens require, you only have to restrict your calorie intake on alternate days.

When you fast, your body starts to burn stored fat for energy, a process known as lipolysis1. Over time, it goes into a metabolic state known as ketosis2, where it uses fat as its main source of energy, instead of sugar.

When done correctly, ADF can also give you thebenefits of fastingbeyond weight loss. Emerging research shows that alternate-day fasting can be a useful tool for improving metabolic markers, boosting heart health, lowering chronic inflammation, and promoting cell repair, says Madiha Saeed, M.D., an integrative family physician and author of The Holistic Rx.

However, most people will find fasting every alternate day challenging. Furthermore, this diet may not be safe for everyone and should only be undertaken under medical supervision, says Bindiya Gandhi, M.D., an American Board-certified physician who practices family medicine and integrative medicine.
