I've said it before and I'll say it again:

We live in an image-obsessed, fat-phobic, one-size-fits all, thin-is-in, skinny-jean-wearing, thigh-gap-measuring, body-fat-freezing, belly-button challenging, rather-be-dead-than-eat-bread warped society where women are starving to be smaller, men are injecting poison into themselves to be bigger and kids in pre-school are begging their parents not to send them to school because they think they're too fat to fit in, and I'm SICK OF IT!

Every time I think I've seen it all, some weight loss "specialist" comes up with a new miracle cure for unwanted pounds that promises to make our lives the pictures of perfection we're striving for, and it's always more ridiculous than the last one.

Today I was told about the HCG diet. If the letters HCG sound familiar, it's because it's a pregnancy hormone. HCG is made by the placenta when a woman gets pregnant. Its purpose is to stimulate the ovaries to get them to keep making progesterone, which thickens the endometrial lining so that she can hold on to her pregnancy. British endocrinologist Dr. A.T.W. Simeons believes that when injected, it can be used a tool for weight loss.

Why eat healthy and exercise when you can be injected with pregnancy hormones, right?


Here's the problem (as if there's only one): in order to lose the weight, you also have to eat no more than 500 calories a day.

Um... excuse me?

Allow me to point out that men and women need a minimum of 1,200 to 1,500 calories a day to SURVIVE! If you eat 500 calories, you will absolutely lose weight, as well as possibly your gallbladder, but hey, how important is your gallbladder anyway if losing it means fitting into your old prom dress?

Pretty friggin' important!

Therefore, it's not HCG that's causing the weight loss, but the starvation, and starvation diets DO NOT WORK.

Come on, people. We need to stop the madness and regain our sanity when it comes to our bodies. I thought we had been through all the bizarre diets:

Grapefruit Cabbage Baby Food Lemon/ginger water Cookie Cotton balls dipped in orange juice

As well as the insane procedures:Tongue patches Ear stapling Tapeworm ingesting The list is endless and horrifying!.

We've reached a point where people no longer care about being fit, they just want to look fit, even if it kills them.

The most sickening part of this for me is the impact it's having on our children. My own eating disorder battle started when I was 17 years old and that's practically a senior citizen when it comes to eating disorders these days. There are kids as young as three years old in treatment centers battling severe EDs while their parents stand by feeling powerless.

I started presenting my Fit vs. Fiction body image workshops for kids in Grade 5 and am now in schools working with kids as young as the very FIRST grade, because kids THAT young are already hating their bodies enough to want to hurt them. I hear from parents all the time, who are watching their once vibrant, happy, confident kids, slowly pull away from their friends and family, lose interest in hobbies and start doing poorly in school, because all they want in life is to be beautiful, but while their families beg them to love themselves for who they are, society teaches them to hate themselves for who they're not.

My eating disorder nearly killed me until I broke free, but not everyone is as lucky. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses, yet are still not taken seriously enough.

I had a mother once actually say to me, "Well, my daughter is chubby, so I wouldn't mind if she caught a little bit of that Anorexia."

Are you shitting me? Enough is enough!

We need to stop listening to what the media says and start focusing on what our bodies need if we have any hope in hell of living long, productive, truly healthy lives.

The diet industry will constantly tell us that we need to lose weight, sell us a cure that will fail, make us feel like the failures and then sell us something else.


It's not just about losing weight, it's about gaining health, and that's not all about a number on the scale or the size of your jeans.

It doesn't matter how our bodies look on the outside if they're falling apart on the inside. Are we trying to be the prettiest corpses in the cemetery?

I've seen too many lives destroyed simply because our society idolizes the prettiest faces while ignoring the most brilliant minds.


It's time to fight back.

Stop buying the diet products that are designed to fail and start believing in yourself again. Listen to your body's natural cues. Eat when your hungry, stop when you're full. I realize it's not that simple, but there are true specialists that can help you -- seek them out. If a solution seems too quick and easy, it will be.

You deserve better and so do our kids.

Self-worth shouldn't be measured in pounds.

Any weight-loss expert would agree that boosting your veggie and fruit intake while reducing the amount of junk you eat is a safe and effective way to lose weight, but this diet bans foods that have been cooked or processed in any way. Why? Raw foodies say cooking destroys nutrients. Though it's true that cooking produce can sometimes reduce nutrient levels, cooked veggies still pack plenty of fiber, vitamins and minerals, and in some instances cooking actually enhances nutrients while also killing bacteria. The biggest issue with this extreme form of veganism? Food prep -- it's totally impractical, says Christopher N. Ochner, Ph.D., director of research development and administration at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center. Raw foodies spend hours upon hours juicing, blending, dehydrating, sprouting, germinating, cutting, chopping and rehydrating.

The alkaline diet -- also known as the alkaline ash diet and the alkaline acid diet -- requires you cut out meat, dairy, sweets, caffeine, alcohol, artificial and processed foods and consume more fresh fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds. The diet certainly has positive points; it's heavy on fresh produce and other healthy, satisfying foods while eliminating processed fare, which in itself may spur weight loss. But your body is incredibly efficient at keeping your pH levels where they need to be, so cutting out these foods really won't affect your body's pH, says Ochner. Not to mention there's no research proving that pH affects your weight in the first place. The bottom line: The diet is strict, complicated and bans foods that can have a place in a healthy eating plan, such as meat, dairy and alcohol.

Developed by naturopathic physician Peter D'Adamo, the Blood Type Diet is based on the notion that the foods you eat react chemically with your blood type. For example, on the diet, those with type O blood are to eat lean meats, vegetables and fruits, and avoid wheat and dairy. Meanwhile, type A dieters go vegetarian, and those with type B blood are supposed to avoid chicken, corn, wheat, tomatoes, peanuts and sesame seeds. However, there's no scientific proof that your blood type affects weight loss. And depending on your blood type, the diet can be extremely restrictive.

Also called the lunar diet, this one is simply fasting according to the lunar calendar. Its quick-fix version involves a day of fasting allowing only water and juice during a full or new moon -- and supposedly losing up to six pounds in water weight in a single day. The extended version starts with that daylong fast and continues with specific eating plans for each phase of the moon. While you'll lose some weight from not eating, it has nothing to do with the moon, and it will come right back, Ochner says.

Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet, The Hollywood Cookie Diet and the Smart for Life Cookie Diet all promise that eating cookies will help you drop pounds. Of course, you don't get to chow down chocolate-chip cookies -- you eat about 500 to 600 calories a day from high-protein and high-fiber weight-loss cookies (one cookie company even makes the cookies from egg and milk protein) for breakfast, lunch and any snacks. Then you eat a normal dinner, for a total of 1,000 to 1,200 calories a day. If you stick to the diet, you will likely lose some weight, but by depriving yourself all day, you set yourself up for bingeing come dinnertime, Ochner says.

Eat whatever you want -- but only five bites of it. On this diet, developed by obesity doctor Alwin Lewis, M.D., you skip breakfast and eat only five bites of food for lunch and five more for dinner. "I'm OK with the idea of eating whatever you want in smaller portions, but you need to round out the rest of your eating with nutrient-dense foods to give your body the fuel it needs," Caspero says. "On this diet, even if you take giant bites of heavily caloric food, you're still barely consuming 900 to 1,000 calories a day."

This diet has been around for decades, and there are a ton of variations. Pretty much all involve subsisting for days on only lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper mixed in water. "You are essentially just drinking diuretics," Ochner says. "You'll shed mostly water weight." Once you start eating solid foods again, you will gain all the weight back. Common side effects include fatigue, nausea, dizziness and dehydration. Plus, on an extremely low-calorie diet like this one, you are going to lose muscle, exactly the kind of weight you don't want to lose, Caspero says.

If a baby can grow up eating the mushy stuff, eating some definitely won't hurt you, but guess what: You aren't a baby. Dieters replace breakfast and lunch with about 14 jars of baby food (most baby food jars contain 20 and 100 calories apiece), and then they eat a low-calorie dinner. It's easy to get too few calories for your body to run its best, Ochner says. Besides, who really wants to take jars of baby food to work each day?

The grandmother of all fad diets, the bulk of this plan is fat-free cabbage soup, eaten two to three times a day for a week along with other low-calorie foods such as bananas and skim milk. In the short term, it does yield weight loss. "It works because you are eating a low-calorie diet full of fiber and water to help aid in fullness," Caspero says. "But it's just a quick fix diet. It can also promote bloating and gas from all the cabbage and is lacking in protein, which is needed to preserve lean body mass. While I am a fan of nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods for weight loss, it should be balanced with other foods such as fruits, carbohydrates, healthy fats and lean protein."

We are all for including produce at every meal, but the various versions of this 80-year-old fad diet instruct dieters to focus all of their meals on grapefruit or grapefruit juice, claiming that the fruit contains fat-busting enzymes that will help dieters lose 10-plus pounds in 12 days. "In reality, any time you are following a very-low calorie diet you will lose weight," Caspero says. And this diet definitely hits that, limiting dieters to 800 to 1,000 calories a day. Some iterations also prohibit eating extremely hot or extremely cold foods, preparing foods in aluminum pans, and requires dieters to space "protein meals" and "starch meals" at least four hours apart.

If you're asleep, you're not eating. Rumored to have been followed by Elvis Presley, this diet takes that simple fact to the extreme, encouraging people to use sedatives to stay asleep for days on end. But sleeping the days away not only starves the body and causes muscle deterioration from a lack of movement, but actually risks death: "Every time you go under, there's a risk," Ochner says. "Sure, you might wake up two pounds lighter, but you might not wake up at all."

This edge-of-starvation diet limits you to about 500 calories a day while taking human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone that proponents tout as a powerful appetite suppressant. However, there's no evidence that HCG does more than act as a placebo, Ochner says. Yes, you'll lose weight, but only due to the extreme calorie restriction. Though a health care provider may legally give you HCG injections, they're typically used to treat fertility issues in women and the FDA has not approved them for weight loss. As for over-the-counter homeopathic products that supposedly contain HCG? Those are illegal.

"You don't need a doctor to tell you that ingesting a tapeworm is a bad idea," Ochner says. But apparently, some people do. This weight-loss tactic has been around for decades, preying on especially desperate dieters. Here's how it goes: Ingest tapeworm eggs, let the tapeworm eat the food you consume once it gets to your intestines, and then, when you lose enough weight, get a doctor to prescribe you an anti-worm medication. But some tapeworm eggs can migrate to various parts of your body or cause other potentially life-threatening problems. Freaked out yet? Good.

Consuming cotton balls soaked in orange juice -- a diet technique may have been born on YouTube, in chat rooms and on Facebook -- is an incredibly dangerous way to suppress your appetite. "This makes my eating-disorder therapy head spin," Caspero says. Not only does consuming cotton balls in place of food deprive the body of nutrients, eating anything that isn't actually food can cause blockages in your intestines. What's more, most cotton balls aren't even made of cotton -- they're composed of bleached, synthetic fibers.

There is an immense amount of controversy surrounding the HCG Diet. This piece will clarify many of the misconceptions and confusions surrounding this diet. The information contained herein has been developed over years of research to clarify if, and how, this hormone is affecting dieters. Keep in mind there are many opinions on the topic, yet this piece is written from my research experience, and to summarize talking points from the March 14, 2012 airing of The Dr. Oz Show.

History of the HCG Diet

Dr. ATW Simeons conducted an experimental treatment involving HCG injections, obese patients, and a special diet. The results of this study were outlined in the now infamous Pounds and Inches manuscript, written in 1954. Once this manuscript became public, it ushered in the use of HCG for weight loss, but it was not accepted as a method of treatment by the FDA or general medicine. Why? The studies in the 1970s and early 1980s failed to show how HCG was working to aid in weight loss. It doesnt make people lose faster; it makes people lose differently. No study to date has shown this, until my most recent clinical trial.

Why Do I Study HCG?

When I first began my examination of the use of HCG with a low-calorie diet, I found that there was little information on it. However, through the use of this regimen, I produced an astounding weight loss in a childhood friend who was desperate. He had struggled with obesity his entire life, and with two family members that had undergone gastric bypass, he was ready to try anything. He said, If you can help me lose weight, then youre onto something!

With daily injections of HCG and a strict diet he swore he would never be able to stick to (but he did), he lost 46 pounds in 6 weeks. In addition, his pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol virtually disappeared. The success spoke for itself. However, I now had a much bigger job ahead of me. I had to discover why it worked.

My Study Findings

In my first retrospective research study conducted from 2010-2011, I analyzed hundreds of patients. This was a large ongoing gathering of data to find proper doses by analyzing blood levels of HCG. In the process of studying the blood levels of the hormone, I found that patients using an oral form of HCG (drops or pellets) had no detectable HCG in the bloodstream. I concluded that HCG is unable to be absorbed by mouth.

Additional studies included the analysis of weekly EKGs and electrolytes in all study patients on a low-calorie diet to monitor safety. There was no significant change in cardiac function or blood electrolytes. However, it must be noted that the patients were all appropriately screened by a physician and a cardiologist prior to their participation in the study to make sure they were healthy enough for this diet. It is important for anyone considering a low-calorie diet to see their physician first to make sure they are a good candidate.

In my next set of studies, I conducted ongoing clinical trials. There were four randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled studies for which the usable data was pooled and analyzed. This meant we tested HCG patients against Placebo patients on the same diet. It was shown that both groups, HCG and placebo, lost weight, but their body structure in terms of fat and muscle were significantly different in the end. This data was revealed for the first time on the March 14, 2012 airing of The Dr. Oz Show.

The large graph shown to the audience illustrated the difference between HCG and Placebo.The HCG group lost an average of 13 pounds in a month, and the Placebo group lost an average of 15 pounds in a month. The weight loss in each group is similar. The striking difference is that the HCG group lost only 2 pounds of muscle, but the Placebo group lost 5 pounds of muscle. This was a significant difference. Anytime muscle is lost from the body frame, it hurts metabolism and puts someone at risk for regaining weight; this is what happens with Placebo or diet alone.

This leads us to conclude that the likely reason why HCG helps someone lose weight differently and better than with diet alone is because it spares muscle. This also helps explain why I do not see rebound weight gain with my patients. This is the first modern clinical trial to demonstrate how HCG may be working for lasting weight loss.

Why are people claiming that HCG causes regaining of weight?

The answer can be very simple. Many people who claim to have lost weight with HCG have only used the drops, which we now know cannot be absorbed. It is the same as dieting alone. Thats why people gain the weight back. The only way we have been able to demonstrate a protection against regaining weight is with the use of HCG injections.

What about recent studies?

There have not been any trials published in over 20 years. My trial is the first to show the difference in body composition between HCG and placebo.

Does this diet have to be done at 500 calories?

Any appropriate diet created by a nutritionist or weight-loss physician should involve a calculation of protein requirements to avoid muscle wasting. There should also be a consideration of activity level when planning an appropriate regimen. Dr. Emmas Protocol does not require the use of 500 calories.

Why is this form of treatment still controversial?

The majority of studies conducted in the 1970s and 1980s looked strictly at weight loss, which wasnt the whole picture. Through my clinical trials, it is now becoming evident that the value of using HCG is as an aid to protect muscle mass, and strengthen metabolism over time. These are the new parameters I am studying in my clinical trials.

Is this a Do-It-Yourself Diet?

This is not a Do-It-Yourself diet. If you are considering trying this diet, you should make sure it is done appropriately through a knowledgeable physician, or enroll in a clinical trial.


I am privileged to be a part of the research of medicine. The overwhelming response from patients telling me how this treatment regimen has changed their lives is what keeps me motivated. I am certain that this data Ive discussed, along with continuing research, will show the medical community how this treatment is producing healthy and long-lasting weight loss in my patients.

Despite clear and consistent advice from health experts that the secret to losing weight is eating less and moving more, it seems were still obsessed with finding a quick fix instead.

The latest alarming weight loss trend is the HCG diet, which involves injecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin twice a day and sticking to a diet of just 500 calories.

The theory goes that HCG, a hormone produced naturally during pregnancy, manipulates the bodys natural tendency to store fat in stubborn areas such as the stomach and thighs. The diet claims to mix up the bodys metabolism and mobilize stored fat.

These HCG injections, which are offered in several cosmetic and weight loss clinics around Australia, are discussed in the current issue of Harpers Bazaar Australia.

I dont think theres any decent evidence that its effective. It seems to be a myth thats floating around.

The magazine interviewed a 39-year-old woman named Rachel (not her real name) who is a size zero and injects herself with HCG twice a day.

Theres definitely a stigma to this. People are so judgmental, Rachel told Harpers Bazaar.

Were living in this no pain, no gain culture. People snigger about lap band surgery and this is tarred with the same brush. Theres more respect out there for self-deprivation.

If I said I got this body by surviving on kale, running marathons on a treadmill and drinking charcoal water, everyone would be applauding me, saying You go girl!

But health experts say there is no scientific evidence that shows HCG works for weight loss, and the injections could cause significant harm.

There was a theory that went around a few years ago that in pregnancy you have hormonal changes and you redistribute weight in order to provide energy to the fetus.

So there were theories that maybe in non-pregnant women it might have some kind of role of modifying energy. Its speculative and as far as Im concerned its unproven. Its something that we strongly advise against and there are recognised complications.

Yeap said the body is not designed to be overloaded with so many hormones.

If youre giving women HCG, one of the risks is ovarian hyperstimulation, he said.

In women who are using it to achieve weight loss, there are reports of women having strokes and other major health problems.

Dr. Jeremy Cumpston from Sydneys Ageless Clinics estimates he has treated 100 patients in the past 15 years with HCG.

People are asking for it, but Id only prescribe it to 20 percent of patients at most. I have to be very familiar with a patients history before Id even consider it. And I only ever allow it to be used over a 12-week period, he told Harpers Bazaar.

Ill only ever consider patients who need to lose 20 pounds. If theyre 10 pounds overweight and the extra heaviness is really affecting them and theyre desperate, then maybe Ill consider prescribing it.

You cant hormonally manipulate your body indefinitely. There will be consequences. Regulate some self control and eat properly.

Last November, the American Medical Association (AMA) implemented a policy stating that the use of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) for weight loss is inappropriate.

The American Society of Bariatric Physicians also found that the use of HCG should be regarded as an inappropriate therapy for weight reduction.

Atkins Diet. Whole30 Diet. Weight Watchers. The HCG Diet. Lemon Juice Diet. Paleo, Jenny Craig, Military Diet, Souping, Juicing, and Brothing. The list can go on and on. It can be overwhelming to translate the information we have access to on the internet for the latest diet fads, but do they really work? Or are they a fad that wont last longer than a gallon of milk left in the car during the month of July?

At the beginning of 2017 a group of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists and other nutrition experts ranked 38 different diets or diet programs and compiled it into a report for U.S. News and World Report. Criteria included in the review process included feasibility/ease to follow the diet, effects on short term and long term weight loss, safety and nutritional adequacy, and how the diet can help prevent chronic disease such as diabetes and heart disease. Costs and exercise associated with the diet or program were not part of the analysis.

Here are six of the 38 diets reviewed that might clear up some of your questions about whether the diet program you are interested in would be worth looking into or if you would be better off avoiding the diet all together.

a. Claim to fame: This diet gives your body a chance to restore its natural balance in 30 days. It improves digestion, mental health, sleep, brain function, and skin health and can result in weight loss.

b. How it works: This diet is broken down into two phases. In Phase 1 added sugars (natural and artificial), legumes, grains, dairy, alcohol, additives such as MSG and sulfites, and baked goods or junk foods (even if made with WHOLE30 approved foods) are eliminated. There are no cheat days allowed and no weighing during this period. It is designed for three meals per day and no snacking between meals. Foods allowed are meats, seafood, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and natural fats. In Phase 2 you reintroduce foods in the following order: Gluten-free alcohol, legumes, gluten-free grains, dairy, and then all other grains. During this time you will evaluate whether the foods cause any negative side effects.

c. Pros and Cons: This diet Improves self-awareness, promotes grocery shopping with a list and planning weekly menus. The recipes can be added to any healthy meal plan even if the diet isnt followed. The cons are that this diet eliminates many foods that provide essential nutrients for 30 days or indefinitely, it can be hard to follow for a month, and it lacks strong scientific evidence at this time. It can also be difficult to follow if you are on the road, have children, or work a busy job.

2. The Paleo Diet (also known as the Caveman Diet)
