Are you trying to learn how to mix HCG injections? If yes, you should check out this guide with everything to know and do.

The fertility and weight-loss industries are massive. And both put a lot of pressure on their clients financially and medically.

Not to mention financially - the weight-loss industry in the U.S. generates $72 billion a year and the fertility industry generates around $15.6 billion.

A common product between the two is HCG, a compound that's used to help people have a baby and lose the baby weight. These may seem to be strange to pair. But to both industries, HCG is a vital component.

And if you eventually patronize these industries for common procedures, you will eventually have to learn how to mixHCG.

Learning What to know How to MixHCG

HCG stands forhuman chorionic gonadotropin. It's a hormone that the uterus excretes during the early stages of pregnancy. It's what most pregnancy tests are trying to detect.

In treating fertility, the injections are used to help the ovaries develop and release and egg. It is also used in men to help increase sperm count.

In weight loss, it's paired with the eponymous HCG diet. It's believed to impact how people experience hunger. It is also paired with a radical daily calorie count reduction, in some cases down to 500 calories a day. This is about a fourth of the calories that most healthy people are recommended to eat.

Mix It Up

If you get a low-cost HCG mixing kit, you will get a few key things: bacteriostatic water, a sterile vial, injection prep pads and a large mixing syringe

You will have to have the HCG prescribed to you by a provider. It often does not come with a mixing kit. Also, your doctor will give you a specific dosing needle and syringe.

Step one:Assess the situation, make sure that you read all the instructions provided to you by your health care provider and the prescribing pharmacist. If there are conflicts in the instructions, call your provider and reconcile them.

Step two:Figure out where the HCG is stored and where it needs to be mixed. In some cases, the HCG will come in the vial that it will be mixed in; in other cases, you will need to use the empty sterile mixing vial.

The HCG will also likely be in a powder that needs to be reconstituted. It also may come in a condensed liquid. Both will need thebacteriostatic water to appropriately dilute and mix.

Step three: Grab the mixing needle and syringe. Attach if need be. Open the lid for the HCG and the water. For powdered HCG, measure out about half of the water needed in the mixing needle and inject it into the HCG. Gently swirl until dissolved. Remove the mixture and inject it into the empty mixing vial. Add the remaining water needed. Gently swirl.

For the concentrate, you will simply add the prescribed amount ofbacteriostatic water in most cases.

Then What?

From there, you use it as you need it for up to 72 hours. Store in a dark refrigerator. Some recommend wrapping the stored vial in foil to help prevent light degradation and to help ensure the vial stays cool.

Learning how to mix HCG is just one point in the collision of life and science. See the articles below for more on what you need to know about the scientific world around you.

Teddi Mellencamp / Instagram 'The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' star Teddi Mellencamp shared before-and-after Thanksgiving photos to Instagram to share her weight loss wisdom.

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Teddi Mellencamp is all about documenting her weight loss journey on her Instagram and inspiring followers along the way. She previously opened up to Women's Health about her 80-pound weight loss and what it took for her to get there.

Now, in her latest Instagram, she shared side-by-side photos of herself at two different Thanksgiving celebrations. There's more to the photos than her physical appearance, though. Teddi also opened up about how her health and eating habits made her feel at the time.

Teddi wrote in the caption: "The pic on the left was a Thanksgiving where I had a chip on my shoulder and many more in my mouth. I didnt want to socialize or interact with family & friends because I was uncomfortable in my own skin. On the right, how I now celebrate the holidays: active, engaged and laughing nonstop. Appreciating those around me instead of worrying about how I can conceal my third piece of pie."

She added that she needed to re-evaluate many things, and that holidays can be a real struggle. "It took me going all in to realize that sitting on the sidelines isnt worth it; being in the game is so much more fun. Is there something you worry/fear during the holidays that get in your way? Let me know below, and lets create a way to push past them so you can enjoy your season to the max," she ended her post.

Teddi, who's currently expecting her third child, has talked about struggling with fad diets in the past. "I did everything from cleanses to the cookie diet. I even did the HCG diet, which involved getting weekly injections of what I hoped was actually HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin hormone), which supposedly would help boost my metabolism so I could lose weight quicker," she wrote in an article for Women's Health. "To be truthful, some of the diets did actually work. I lost weight, although it wasnt in a healthy way, and I had to keep jumping from one crazy, restrictive plan to the next to keep it off."

Eventually, she found success through finding fitness, addressing her emotional eating, and learning about good nutrition. And she also started her company, All In, to help other women. Teddi told Women's Health, "I want to give every woman that system of commitment and 24/7 accountability that will help them be successful with their health goals."

Losing weight takes a lot of hard work, but it doesn't require extreme dieting, eliminating entire food groups, or depriving yourself of calories and nutrients. Fad diets, often promoted by celebrities and influencers, are among the worst offendersnot only are they potentially dangerous to your health, but they're also ineffective in the long-term (keto, we're looking at you!).

What is a fad diet, exactly? You know you have a fad diet on your hands when the buzzy plan is unrealistic and limits you to eating certain types of foods. Some fad diets may encourage you to skip eating altogether and stick to drinking juices and teas instead (not safe, by the way). To help you avoid completely sabotaging your weight loss goals and choose the right diet for you, we consulted dietitians to share the top fad diets you need to ditch this year.

1The HCG Diet

The HCG Diet requires you to consume just 500 calories per day while supplementing with human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a pregnancy hormone that is falsely associated with weight loss. "This is an incredibly restrictive, very low calorie diet that will promote rapid weight loss, but at the expense of losing both muscle mass and body fat, which could slow metabolism and make future weight management a challenge," says Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, CDE, author of 2-Day Diabetes Diet. Not only can the diet trigger disordered eating, but taking OTC HCG products is also considered illegal and dangerous by the FDA. "Since sustaining a diet of 500 calories per day is not possible long term, the likelihood of maintaining weight lost on this diet is slim," Palinski-Wade says.

2The Werewolf Diet

Yes, this is a real thing. The Werewolf Diet diet limits how you eat based on the cycles of the moon, such as a fasting with juice for 24 hours during a full moon and not eating past 6 p.m. during other moon phases. "This diet is not backed by research, so it sets unnecessary restrictions that make it a challenge to sustain long term," Palinski-Wade says. "Instead of eating based on the cycles of the moon, focus on eating balanced meals with plenty of fiber, lean protein, and healthy fats for a balanced approach that will promote a healthy weight, and one you can stick with."

3The Five-Bite Diet

Created by Californian internist Alwin Lewis, MD, the Five-Bite Diet requires you to skip breakfast and then only eat five bites of your meal at lunch and dinner. "The very small portions of this diet will promote weight loss, but the incredible restriction of eating only 10 bites of food per day is not a healthy way to lose weight," Palinski-Wade says. "You will most likely not be able to take in the nutrients your body needs each day in just 10 bites of food, and the hunger and lack of satisfaction provided by this diet ensures it will be unable to be sustained." The restrictive meal plan will lead to lack of energy and muscle loss, she says.

4The Keto Diet

With celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian and Halle Berry as fans, this low-carb diet has become quite popular. You may start losing weight in the beginning, but the diet is extremely restrictive, so many of the junk foods you may have been over-consuming aren't in your diet any longer but the diet itself is unsustainable, says Toby Amidor, MS, RD, an award-winning nutrition expert and Wall Street Journal best-selling cookbook author. In addition, you might become constipated, due to lack of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

5Zero-sugar diets

Many celebs swear by cutting out every last smidge of sugar. They ban even a gram of the sweet stuff in order to achieve their beach bodies. Sherri Shepherd favors this approach, says Suzanne Dixon, MPH, MS, RDN, a registered dietitian with The Mesothelioma Center. This means cutting out fruit and veggies, like berries and sweet potatoes. The worst part: You'll miss the vitamins, minerals, and disease-fighting phytonutrients, she says.

6The Blood Type Diet

A naturopathic physician wrote Eat Right 4 Your Type, which is the foundation of the blood type diet. The premise is to follow a diet and lifestyle that best suits your blood type to improve your health and lose weight.

All four suggested ways of eating are based on real, whole foods, which can prove beneficial for anyone who eats a diet high in processed foods and sugar, says Maggie Michalczyk, MS, RD, but it causes unnecessary focus. While there is some evidence that shows that certain blood types are at a higher risk for certain diseases, there aren't studies showing that they have anything to do with diet, she says.

7Juice Cleanses

The majority of weight loss from juicing is due to dehydration and cleaning out your colon, so its not sustainable, much less safe. "Dehydration can lead to fainting, weakness and headaches. It can also lead to an increase in hunger. When you flush your colon, you disrupt the bacterial colonization that actually helps you. As a result, your gut microbiome becomes out of balance, leading to digestive abnormalities, says Michael Jay Nusbaum, MD.

8The Apple Cider Vinegar Diet

Megan Fox was all about taking apple cider vinegar shots, but Amidor doesnt think its worth it. The weight loss effects of a poor appetite after ingestion are probably due to nausea and stomachaches from the acidity of the vinegar. If you do want to include apple cider vinegar in your diet, make it a delicious part of your meal and include it in dressings, marinades, and sauces, she says.

A teatox is a diet plan that incorporates "skinny teas" that have special additives like senna, which is an herb that's found in over-the-counter laxatives.

The National Institutes of Health says senna is likely safe when taken in the short term, but unsafe when taken long term. Using a laxative-type supplement to lose weight can be dangerous because it can cause diarrhea and dehydration, says Natalie Rizzo, MS, RD, author of The No-Brainer Nutrition Guide For Every Runner.

10The Alkaline Diet

Popularized by Tom Brady, Kelly Ripa and other celebs, this fad diet has no scientific basis under the premise of eating foods that will keep pH levels in the blood balanced. Problem is, the body has its own internal mechanisms to keep your blood pH levels within a very narrow window and that is not impacted by what you eat or drink, unless you have an underlying medical condition that impacts pH, Julie Upton, RD, co-founder of Appetite for Health, explains.

While I think parts of Whole30 are great, like avoiding refined and highly processed foods, it prohibits all sugar (real or artificial), grains, dairy, beans and peanuts. It's nearly impossible to follow, and I never recommend diets that eliminate whole food groups, especially when it's more than one, says Lauren Harris-Pincus, MS, RDN, author of The Protein-Packed Breakfast Club. Whole30 sets people up to fail, making them feel that healthy eating is too difficult, she says.

12The Lectin-Free Diet

Kelly Clarkson helped bring the lectin-free dietaka The Plant Paradoxto the spotlight after she lost 37 pounds from following the plan. But this diet isnt grounded in science, despite being written by a cardiologist, Upton says.

The premise is that people need to shun lectins, a type of protein found in wheat, beans, potatoes, and nuts. The creator suggests that removing foods with lectins can improve your health and promote weight loss, she says. But lectins in food are perfectly good for you, so dont follow this regimen unless you cant digest them.

13The Celery Juice Diet

Busy Phillips, Lea Michele, and other celebs swear by the green juice for reducing inflammation and aiding muscle recovery post-workout, but drinking celery juice alone won't help you lose weight.

There is no benefit to juicing celery and drinking it at any specific time of the day. Celery is a lovely, nutritious vegetable, but juicing it does not compound any of its benefits, says Monica Auslander Moreno, MS, RD, a nutrition consultant for RSP Nutrition. The expense, the overload of antioxidants, and the lack of fiber, fat, and satiety from drinking liquids all make the celery juicing trend an ineffective diet, she explains.

14Activated Charcoal Drinks

Fans of activated charcoal include Kim Kardashian and Gwyneth Paltrow, but incorporating it into your everyday diet is not something you want to get into, says Moreno. This still baffles me. Activated charcoal is something I used to see when I worked in a hospital as an emergency detoxification treatment for severe alcohol or drug overdoses. Yes, it does bind to toxins in your bodybut healthy people need to know that food is not a toxin, she says.

15The Grapefruit Diet

The Grapefruit Diet is a high-protein eating plan that involves eating grapefruit with every meal. It's a 12-day plan that restricts your calories to about 1,000 per day and claims to promote a 10-pound weight loss, but the claims aren't backed by science, Michalczyk says.

It's not great for weight loss because it's not sustainable. It might lead to weight loss in the short term because you're taking in fewer calories, but it's very likely you will gain that weight right back when it's done, she says. Instead, simply enjoy grapefruit with breakfast as a treat.

16The Cabbage Soup Diet

The Cabbage Soup Diet emphasizes eating large amounts of it as every meal. You are allowed to eat one to two other low-calorie foods daily in addition to the soup, which is supposed to accelerate weight loss in seven days. "But its very restrictive and can't be sustained in the long-term, Michalczyk says. Going from this very low-calorie diet back to regular eating will likely cause you to regain any weight, she explains. A better way to enjoy cabbage is to add it to your diet for its vitamin C content and digestive benefits.

17The Master Cleanse

The Master Cleanse encourages significant weight loss and promotes the clearing out of toxins by following a liquid-only diet for 10 days. You can drink only a lemonade-like beverage, a salt-water drink, or an herbal laxative teaand you don't eat any solid foods.

Not only will you be absolutely starving on this plan, but you will also suffer from cravings, irritability, fatigue and more. Plus, there is no evidence to suggests that any of these ingredients clear out toxins from your body, Rizzo says. Youre also likely to gain back most of the weight once you start eating again.

18The Baby Food Diet

The baby food diet calls for eating 10 to 15 jars of baby food for breakfast and lunch. While I wouldnt call this dangerous, its definitely severe calorie restriction. Each jar of baby food has about 30 to 70 calories, with little protein or healthy fats, Rizzo says. Someone following this type of diet will definitely get really bored with their food choices and will miss out of macronutrients, like protein and fat, she says.

19The Dukan Diet

The Dukan Diet was created by Pierre Dukan, a French medical doctor, in 2000. The Dukan Diet is designed to help your body achieve its "true weight," which is defined as a realistic weight you can attain and maintain for the rest of your life.

"While I'm all for reaching a healthy lifestyle that's maintainable in the long run, where this diet falls short on is that it neglects the set point theory of weight, says Elizabeth Ann Shaw, MS, RDN. It can be dangerous for someone with a history of disordered eating, she says.

Celebs like Melissa Joan Heart have been fans of this diet plan that involves eating a variety of pre-packaged meals. While Nutrisystem provides a quick fix for those who want to lose weight but don't want to cook or go grocery shopping, not all of these packaged foods provide a nutritionally balanced meal.

Consuming a diet of calorie-controlled processed shakes, bars and meals will build up toxins within the body, and those preservatives are chemicals that can actually backfire and slow your metabolism down, says Keith Kantor, PhD, a leading nutritionist and CEO of the Nutritional Addiction Mitigation Eating and Drinking (NAMED) program.

21The Atkins Diet

The pioneer of low-carb diets, Atkins promotes weight loss by restricting carbohydrates and sugar and loading up on protein.

I've been a registered dietitian for 23 years, and I've yet to meet someone who lost weight on Atkins and permanently kept it off. Carb-phobia is rampant in America, but low-carb diets, like Atkins, are high in unhealthy processed meats and miss nutrient-dense foods like fruit, whole grains and beans, says Harris-Pincus. The Atkins diet also lacks adequate fiber, which can have negative consequences on gut health and mood, she adds.

22Meal Replacement Shakes

Meal replacement shakes can lead to some initial weight loss due to their lower-calorie content, but they lack the nutrition of real food and are highly processed, Harris-Pincus says. This usually leads to weight gain shortly after someone stops drinking the shakes. If shakes are your thing, Harris-Pincus recommends making your own smoothie with fruit and greens, plain Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, and a source of healthy fat like chia seeds, avocado or nut butter.

23Paleo Diet

Jessica Biel, among others, are big fans of the paleo diet. But it prohibits numerous food groups including dairy, legumes, grains, potatoes, and refined sugar. "Many people have been successful following this plan, however, cutting out numerous food groups also eliminates many important nutrients, Amidor says.

2422-day Vegan Diet

Beyonc and Jay-Z tried going on the 22-Day Revolution by Marco Borges to improve their food choices, and while you'll eat plenty of vegetables, its pretty restrictive. If you eliminate processed foods from your diet and eat only wholesome ones, you will lose weight. Although there is no calorie counting in this diet, the portions are pretty small and calories are low, especially for active people, says Amidor.

25Raw Food Diet

The theory behind this diet is that raw food is packed with natural enzymes and if they are cooked above 116F, the heat will destroy most of the vitamins and phytonutrients, Amidor says. Although weight loss is possible due to the elimination of processed food and a lower-calorie intake, cooked food has nutritional and safety benefits. For example, mushrooms and asparagus have more nutritional value when cooked. Baking and roasting vegetables enhances their natural flavors so you don't have to add too many other ingredients that can increase the number of calories consumed.

The HCG diet is based on the work of Dr. ATW Simeons. There are several aspects of the diet with the most important being the ability to give oneself a single injection on a daily basis. Most patients are a little indifferent about doing a daily injection, but once the program is explained in detail, they are willing to proceed with the self training. Once on the program, the injections are performed daily, it is best to do the injections the same time everyday.

The diet consists of calorie restriction to 500 calories per day. In my office I allow patients to eat approximately 700-750 calories per day. One of the most important premises of the diet is the use of fat and oils. On the HCG diet, you are not allowed to eat and drink foods which contain fats/oil. The data on this information is reasoned that when a woman is pregnant she makes and stores fat to feed the fetus. So with HCG, you are tricking the body to think it is pregnant and if you dont eat fat, then you will break down fat.

Many skeptics are concerned about the limited calories on this diet. So, lets do the math. Each pound of fat is 3500 calories. Thus if you have to lose 20 pounds you will multiply 350020= 70,000 calories to burn. Think of fat as money and calories is the currency. Your fat deposits are your savings and if you have to lose 20 pounds (70,000 calories) you have lots of resources in your bank to spend and you need to stop making caloric deposits.

The fat restriction is not only limited to what you ingest but what you put on the skin. Shampoo, hair conditioner, body lotion and skin cream all contain some fat. Applying these products to the skin once on HCG may affect your results as some of the fat may get absorbed through the skin. Dr. Bissoon tell his patients that a small amount of skin lotion is not going to make you overweight; if this is correct we have 100 percent obesity.

There is no exercise requirement on the HCG diet; in fact it is advised not to exercise. Dr. Bissoon does advocate a healthy lifestyle change and recommends 20-25 minutes of cardiovascular exercise every other day.

All weight loss programs start with a consultation. During the consultation we review your medical history, family history and social history. At this time, Dr. Bissoon will determine if you need laboratory diagnostic testing. As part of your visit, we will either draw the blood in our office or give you a prescription and you can go to any laboratory of your choice.

After the blood is drawn, we will perform a medical examination to include your height, weight, percent body fat, percent muscle and the Body Mass Index. In addition we may also take measurements and photographs. These parameters will be monitored on subsequent visits to monitor your progress.

Once the physical examination is completed, Dr. Bissoon will review the HCG diet in detail with you. He will review what you can eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Although the HCG Diet does not require exercise, we encourage patients to get 20-25 minutes of cardiovascular exercise as this starts you on the road to life style change.

Dr. Bissoon will then teach you the technique of administering self injections. This training is easily learned by most all patients rather quickly.

We will make up a 30 day supply of pre-filled HCG syringes. This makes it easy for you to do you own daily injections without having to draw up the exact amount everyday. The syringes are placed in cold pack with an ice pack. Once you get home, you will remove the syringes from the bag and place it in the refrigerator.

There are lots of food rules to be aware of on the HCG diet, but you also shouldnt neglect your water intake. Just like youll keep careful track of what you eat, you should pay attention to how much fluid you consume. One of the most common questions people on the HCG protocol have is how much water to drink.

The exact amount of fluid you should drink varies depending on your size and activity level. In his original protocol, Dr. Simeons recommends drinking at least 2 liters, or half a gallon, of fluids per day. Many experts recommend consuming between 0.5 and 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight. If you exercise regularly or live in a hot climate and lose fluids through sweat, you should consume closer to 1 ounce per pound.

Its better to drink slowly throughout the day than to consume all of your fluids at once. Your body processes fluids better when you supply them gradually, and youll feel better when you stay consistently hydrated all day. You should be careful not to chug down too much water at once, or you may put yourself at risk for hyponatremia. This is a dangerous medical condition caused by low blood sodium that can cause vomiting, confusion, fatigue, and even seizures or death in severe cases. Instead of having an entire gallon of water with dinner, drink a cup every hour or two.

You can tell if youre getting enough fluids by checking your urine in the morning. You should urinate a lot when you use the bathroom after waking up, and your urine should be pale or clear. If its a darker yellow, you need to be getting more fluids.

Your weight can tell you if youre getting enough fluids, too. If youre properly hydrated, your weight should remain stable or be on a downward trend. If it fluctuates every day, its a sign that youre not getting enough fluids. High sodium meals can cause your body to retain fluid, and your body wont be able to flush out the sodium and get rid of the water weight if you dont drink enough. Therefore, your weight will fluctuate every time you eat a high sodium meal.

Its important to get enough fluids on any diet. Water gives you energy, boosts your immune system, and keeps your body functioning properly. Most people dont consume enough fluids and are in a chronic state of dehydration. This can make it difficult to stay energized and make it through all the phases of the HCG plan.

If youre dehydrated, you may mistake your thirst for hunger, which will cause you to overeat. With the limited calories allowed on the plan, you cant afford to eat when youre not hungry. Being hydrated reduces your risk of overeating. Fluids also help you feel full between meals, which is especially important for the 500-calorie phase.

The diet doesnt restrict salt, so many dieters over-season their foods to add more satisfaction. Because the food options are limited, salt is one of the best ways to make your meals more enjoyable. However, sodium causes fluid retention, which will make you feel bloated and will increase the number on the scale. Water weight isnt the same as fat, but it can still be discouraging to see your weight increase. Staying hydrated will allow your body to flush out the sodium without retaining fluid.

If youre not used to drinking 2 liters of fluids per day, it may seem difficult to consume that much. Plain water might get boring after a few days, but beverages are a great way to add variety to the HCG diet. Drinks are still limited, and Dr. Simeons original protocol only allows the following:

Although this is a short list, you can get creative with your beverages. Black tea and green tea both contain plenty of water, so they can count for a few cups of your daily fluid intake. The protocol also allows the following sweeteners and flavorings:

You can add more flavor to tea with stevia and lemon juice, or you could add stevia and lemon juice to water to make an HCG-friendly lemonade. There are plenty of stevia extracts you can use to flavor your water, too. If youre a fan of sparkling water, you can add flavored stevia extracts to help curb a soda craving.

Most people only focus on their food during the HCG diet, but water is important, too. To stay healthy and energized, you should drink at least 2 liters of fluids throughout the day. Once you get used to feeling so hydrated, youll never want to drink less than that again.

Understanding KetosisAn excerpt from HCG 2.0 Dont Starve, Eat Smart and Lose

Its unclear how much was known about Ketosis when Dr. Simeons was practicing. There is no mention of it in his manuscript.

Ketosisis a state that exists when your body is deprived of carbohydratesand must resort to its fat stores for energy. Of the foods we eat, carbs are most easily converted into energy. Complexcarbohydrates, mostly starches, are broken down to simplercarbohydrates, ultimately glucose, and then converted to ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate) in the citric acid cycle. ATP is the energy exchange used in every cellular process in the human body. Its kind of like the gasoline we put in our cars. Gasoline is refined from more complex hydrocarbons as glucose is from more complex carbohydrates. If we eat excessive calories fromcarbs, our body stores them away in our fat cells. If we deprive ourselves ofcarbs, we tap into our fat stores for energy. Think of our fat stores as a bank account. If were depositing more money than were spending, or eating more calories than were burning off, our bank account gets bigger like our bellies. If we spend more than we deposit, as in the state oflow carb dieting and Ketosis, our bank account gets smaller resulting in weight loss.

AKetoneis an energy source derived from fat andKetosisis the physiological state in which this takes place. So why isKetosissuch a trendy word in dieting? The first and probably most popularKetosisDiet was theAtkins diet. In summary, Atkins only stipulation was that you were to consume a minimal amount of carbs. There were relatively few restrictions on fat and protein consumption and it was generally effective in promoting weight loss. It gained popularity in the mid 90s, but has since lost steam because of its in-sustainability, due the fact that it allowed way too much dairy, which is highly inflammatory and it didnt distinguish between healthy Omega 3 fats and Omega 6 fats. OtherKetosis Dietsyou may have heard of, or even tried, are theSouth Beach Diet, Dukan Diet, Paleo Diet, 5/1 protein shake diet and many others. All of thesedietsare variations of alow carb diet. When you eliminatecarbs, your body must tap into fat stores for energy, thus resulting inKetosisandweight loss.

Carbohydrates are a questionable part of the omnivorous diet of humans, especially highly processed carbs, which have no place whatsoever. There is an abundant amount of research on Inuit cultures and other indigenous tribes throughout the world that eat little to no carbs. These cultures, specifically Inuit, have a high-protein, high-fat diet and during long stretches of time throughout the year go completely without carbs. They experience no teeth decay or heart disease, diabetes is nearly non-existent and there is ZERO obesity. According to Dr. Eric Dewailly, MD, Ph.D, researcher, and Professor of Social and Preventative Medicine at Laval University, The traditional Inuit diet is fats and proteins, no sugar at all. It is probably one of the healthiest diets you can have. The human body is built for that. (2007).

If this high-protein, high-fat diet is so healthy, why dont we hear more about its positive effects? Probably for a lot of reasons, some relating to our for-profit health care system, others relating to the simple fact that the word fat carries such a negative connotation that doctors are reluctant to recommend it. But dont be fooled, a high-protein, high-fat diet, balanced with a 1:1 ratio of Omega 3s to Omega 6s is what were built for, as Dr. Dewailly says.

Thetraditional HCG diet, as practiced by Dr. Simeons,is a mildly Ketogenic Dietwith the addition of theHCG hormone. Thetraditional dietconsists of adequate protein, low fats and adequate carbs combined with theHCG hormone supplement. There is a slight discrepancy in the research regarding the amount of carbs one can consume and still maintain Ketosis. Keep in mind that Ketosis isnt all-or-nothing. There are depths and stages; less carbs equal greater Ketosis which in turn results in more rapid weight loss. Some research suggests that Ketosis can be achieved at .5 grams of carbs per pound. So for example, if you weigh 180 pounds, you can consume 90 grams of carbs and achieve Ketosis. Others research says you must consume less than 50 grams per day to achieve Ketosis. The Atkins diet, as we discussed earlier, allows for only 20 grams of carbs. The traditional HCG diet allowed between 60 and 80, which, by any standard, is at the high end of Ketosis. Limiting carbs is the absolute most important thing you can do to accelerate/maintain your weight loss. And, if youre like most, this will be the most difficult part. Not simply because we crave carbs, but because starches are such a staple in our diet that we almost cannot imagine a meal without them.

Starches, which are complex carbohydrates, make for cheap filler. I grew up in a family of five and while we were very middle class, we lived on a pretty strict budget. This probably wont be much of a surprise to many readers as you will relate, but my mother could make a single pound of hamburger last two meals. She did so with starches; potatoes, noodles, bread, etc. This is how many of us were raised and this habitual component of our diet, or how we ate as children, is a powerful motivator as to how we eat as adults. The starch habit is a perfect example of this. The problem with starches, and more so with simple carbohydrates like those in fruit, is that they are so rapidly digested that the rush of incoming fuel cannot be fully metabolized and these calories ultimately end up stored as fat. This is fine as children because were more active, but if we continue to consume the same percentage of carbs as adults well gain weight because our activity level and metabolic rate decrease significantly.

Additionally, Ketosis has a significant effect on the amount of hunger youll experience on the diet. When your body is comfortably in a state of Ketosis, as it is when limiting carbs to 30 grams per day, youll be supplied with ample amounts of ketone calories from stored fat; this will not only provide you with sufficient energy, but will mediate hunger. When youre fluctuating in and out of Ketosis, as you often will on the traditional diet, you wont be consistently supplied with ketone calories and youll experience both lethargy and intermittent hunger.

By eliminating the high-sugar fruits and bread sticks that were allowed on the traditional diet, and replacing those calories with lean protein, youve already brought your carb intake to below 30 grams per day, which will comfortably maintain Ketosis by any research standard. This is the key to HCG 2.0. TheHCGthen expedites and targetsKetosisby unlocking our abnormal fat stores. Its important to note that the HCG is NOT what causes your weight loss. The weight loss is derived from your low calorie, Ketosis diet. Then why add HCG? Look at it this way, if Ketosis is the door that houses our abnormal fat, HCG is the key. Before I elaborate, we need to discuss fat, its role in the human body, both good and bad, and why it accumulates in some of us more than others.

Dr. Zach LaBoube
