Let me set the scene: its lockdown in May 2020 and Im self-isolating at my parents house, having dinner with my family and I cannot hear a thing. Ive spent the afternoon up in my room masturbating and, somehow, Ive orgasmed myself into temporary deafness.
Turns out, its a very extreme reaction people with a vulva can have after orgasming. At this point, Ive got over 15 years worth of orgasms under my belt, but never have I been unable to hear my sister ask if I can pass her the salt. Another unexpected result? My skin has never looked better.
While many spent the pandemic jade-rollering TikTok-induced dark circles or rekindling their love of knitting to curb anxiety, I spent it masturbating. Id never been more sexually frustrated in my life a cruel irony seeing as physical contact was against the rules (for everyone but Matt Hancock, apparently).
Friends and work colleagues were complimenting my skin on Zoom calls and asking what new products I was using, but the thing was, I hadnt changed my skincare routine. Although its not like I could tell my boss, Oh, this glow? I had two orgasms during my lunch break. Im not talking about a permanent rosy finish to my cheeks that a beauty brand could package into a blush and sell this was a glow from within.
As with most people who took up lockdown hobbies, when a normal version of life returned, I couldnt spend as much time on my craft as I wanted to, and my skin noticed. Yes, the government was letting us have sex again and entanglements and situationships came and went but sadly, very few added to my orgasm tally. (Thanks, pleasure gap.) Life got in the way and my skin wasnt looking as healthy as it did during my peak orgasm intake throughout lockdown.
I drafted an array of skincare lotions and potions to try to rectify the issue, but they didnt seem to be cutting it. Nothing was giving me the glow reflected in the skin of selfies past, and thats when it clicked. My skin seemed to fluctuate depending on my sex habits, so I thought Id investigate.
I wanted to see if regular climaxes would bring my skin back from the brink; a win-win situation, if you ask me. At my lockdown peak, I was averaging about six or seven a day I had nothing else to do, other than play Wordle but in non-pandemic life, I decided three felt more achievable. I devised a schedule to do it at the same time every day, meaning Id be less likely to be scatty and forget. I called them my O breaks.
If I dipped below my goal, Id try to make it up the next day, but if not, I wasnt going to punish myself. I scheduled at least one in the morning, one in my lunch break if working from home and at least one before bed. If I was in the office, I would skip my lunchtime O break and have one when I got home instead.
The schedule varied at the weekend, but I found it easier to get the job done than during a busy weekday. It sounds disciplined, but my skin in theory was going to thank me later.
While I diligently undertook my own research, I was also keen to look into the science. Could it really be true that some self-lovin is better for the skin than even the most potent of potions? Because an orgasm is free, after all
Orgasms make your heart rate and blood pressure go up, which increases circulation, providing essential oxygen and nutrients to the skin, as well as flushing out toxins and helping you achieve a glowing complexion, explains Paris Acharya, an aesthetic doctor at Londons Waterhouse Young Clinic.
In fact, research has found that couples aged 40 to 50 who have 50% more sex than the average for their age group look five to seven years younger than their counterparts. The study, carried out by consultant clinical psychologist Dr David Weeks, claims this is due to the endorphins released, plus a boost in circulation thanks to the exercise involved. It also releases human growth hormone, which makes skin more elastic.
The hormone oxytocin is a key player in climax, Dr Acharya explains. Whether its released in high enough levels to significantly impact skin health still requires further research but we do know it helps to reduce inflammation and stress. Both are drivers in many skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis, so it may improve skin health indirectly.
And the benefits dont stop there. A study by the University of Michigan found that oestrogen is released when we climax, which has a direct impact on our levels of collagen. Oestrogen prevents the breakdown and reduction of collagen, which helps to maintain structure, thickness and reduces the appearance of wrinkles, says Dr Acharya.
Additionally, having an orgasm releases the sex hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (we cant pronounce it, either), which is known for its anti-ageing benefits and ability to repair skin and tissues, as well as improving immunity and brain function.
Its not just superficial, though. The link between our brains and our skin dubbed psychodermatology has become a trend in recent years, and it seems our sex lives could play a part, too. Nan Wise, neuroscientist and author of Why Good Sex Matters, believes this is down to what she calls the brain crotch. Bear with me
A region of the brain called the somatosensory cortex allows us to feel touch, temperature and pain sensations, she explains. We found that sensations from the genitals are processed by a specific place within the somatosensory cortex, which we named the genital sensory cortex. (AKA our brain crotch).
The more stimulated you are, the more that section of your brain is activated, which is why some orgasms are more mind-blowing than others. Its also responsible for releasing the good chemicals Dr Acharya mentioned earlier. Dr Wise adds that theres also serotonin, prolactin and internally manufactured mood-lifting opioids, such as endorphins. The feel-good afterglow has its roots in the chemistry of our brains.
A recent study discovered that you can have three different types of orgasms with a vulva. These include the wave (a short burst of pelvic contractions), the volcano (preceded by increasing upward pelvic floor tensions) and lastly, the avalanche (high pelvic floor contractions, decreasing during and after an orgasm).
Questionable names aside, it had me wondering if one type of orgasm was more beneficial than others for my skin Im trying to use my time wisely here. I went to sex educator Stella Anna Sonnenbaum for the answer. The vagina is said to have reflex zones, just like our feet, she explains. Stimulation of different parts evoke different sensations.
Of course, not everyone can orgasm, and its normal to struggle. According to a 2017 survey, only 65% of heterosexual women reached orgasm during sexual intimacy compared with the 95% of heterosexual men, who agreed they regularly orgasm. So how do we get there to reap the skincare and other benefits?
Essentially, youve got to experiment. We all have our own erotic blueprint, comprised of scenarios or plots that really turn us on, explains Sonnenbaum. Personally, my clitoris has always been my pleasure safe haven, which mightve made me lazy with finding other locations. So, I set myself a task to see if these different spots unlocked more skincare benefits.
This Pokmon-esque assignment to catch em all was at times frustrating, confusing and challenging, but also fascinating, giving me a whole new appreciation for my body. Each O break had a different agenda, and afterwards, I studied my skin to see if I could spot the difference, but even Sherlock Holmes wouldnt have been able to work it out. While the orgasms varied in sensation, I couldnt confidently say that various methods affected my skin differently.
If, like me, youre struggling to see any downsides in this approach, Sonnenbaum has some useful tips to get you going. If your partner has a penis or is using a strap-on, she recommends experimenting with angles and depth of penetration. Use a wedge or pillow to lie on during missionary and change positions often, to doggy style or on-top ones, she says. Go slowly and stop between them to let sensations develop.
Another option is getting creative with your toys and scenarios. A fun exercise you can do naked or fully clothed is pretend to make love in a wild way, rolling around, moving and breathing a lot, Sonnenbaum suggests. Set a timer for three minutes and have a giggle together. Then, take turns to explore the receiver is the boss and gives instructions.
If youre following a strict orgasm schedule like myself, youre not always going to have a partner nearby to help you out. In this case, Sonnenbaum advises letting go of any expectations and focusing instead on different sensations. Powerful waterproof wands can be used in the bath on the bony structure of the body, such as the clavicles or sternum, before approaching the pelvic bones and the pubic bone, she says. For internal vaginal and anal arousal zones, I recommend straight, thin toys to explore your arousal map. Take time to breathe breath helps us feel sensations more.
My personal fave is maude's Vibe Personal Massager. Without it, this feature wouldn't exist (yes, it's that good).
Maude maude Vibe Personal Massager
Maude maude Vibe Personal Massager
If theres anything Ive learned, its that your mind has got to be on board. Using fMRI analysis which looks at blood flow to the brain Dr Wise found that women only have to think about being penetrated by a dildo to create an orgasm effect on their brain. Which all goes to show that you should never underestimate the power of a vivid imagination.
No expert could give me a definitive timeline for how long Id need to stick to my orgasm routine to see long-term effects past the regular afterglow. Similar to how a serum affects skin, it differs for everyone. As routines go, however, this wasnt a hard one to stick to. Although I started to see a difference in my skin within two weeks, its still a routine I try to keep up to this day. Maintenance is key, after all.
Following my many orgasms, one thing was conclusive: putting my pleasure first had made my skin happier than Id ever seen it before. Monthly breakouts reduced, while the telltale glow became a regular occurrence.
That being said, Im not sure Ill be chucking away my whole skincare wardrobe just yet. For starters, no climax can provide you with sun protection (sorry), and SPF is essential, no matter the weather. If you also struggle with specific kinds of acne or other skin conditions, your first port of call should always be a GP to discuss the routes you can take.
For me, a skincare and orgasm routine work together in perfect harmony, giving me the best of both worlds. Its similar to keeping a houseplant alive; in order for them to thrive, they need daily watering and the right amount of sunlight. In my case, that means applying my vitamin C serum after Ive had my morning orgasm.

Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon walks to the dugout during a season-opening loss to the Oakland Athletics on Thursday. Rendon was shown on camera getting into an altercation with a fan after the game. (Jed Jacobsohn / Associated Press)
When Anthony Rendon came into view, he was already clutching the fans shirt.
The widely circulated 12-second video didnt show what led up to Rendons confrontation with the Athletics fan Thursday night after the Angels 2-1 season-opening defeat at the Oakland Coliseum.
In this case, the lack of context doesnt matter.
Rendon is an idiot.
Short of him preventing someone from being assaulted, nothing would excuse what he was recorded doing.
Rendon was shown reaching up to the seats perched above the walkway that connects the visitors dugout to the clubhouse, his balled-up left hand holding a fan by the front of his shirt.
What did you say? Rendon said. Yeah, you called me a b, huh?
It wasnt me, the fan said.
Yeah, you did, Rendon replied.
At some point, Rendon released the fan, and swung an open palm at his head, perhaps at the brim of his Athletics cap.
Get the f out of here, Rendon barked.
Rendons slap missed its intended target. He couldnt hit a civilian; no wonder he went hitless in the game with two strikeouts.
Already, Rendon was the Angels $245-million money suck, spending the majority of the last two seasons on the injured list while taking up about a fifth of the teams payroll. He became something worse Thursday night, a baseball player without any perspective, a selfish millionaire who placed his childish needs for retribution above the organizations well-being.
This is a player the Angels are counting on as much as they are Shohei Ohtani or Mike Trout. Good luck to them with that.
Rendon is now under investigation by the commissioners office and will deserve the suspension he is likely to receive. He is also under investigation by the Oakland Police Department and will deserve whatever comes of that. (OPD said no victim has come forward.)
To be clear, the fan deserved worse than what he got, provided he said what Rendon accused him of saying. A grown man cant call another grown man certain names and expect nothing to happen.
Story continues
That doesnt mean it was Rendons place to administer justice.
Receiving verbal abuse is part of a professional athletes job, especially on the road. Theres no inherent value in hitting a baseball. What makes that particular skill valuable is that people care about it. They care enough to spend hundreds of dollars to buy tickets and hundreds more on merchandise. They care enough to develop a love of certain players and hatred of others.
The emotions projected onto the game and its players are why Anthony Rendon will earn $38 million this year.
Rendon doesnt have to be here if he doesnt want to. He has the choice of walking away and playing for free in a Sunday beer league in which people wont call him names.
He is 32. Hes in his 11th year in the major leagues. He should know better.
He doesnt. The Angels had a day off Friday, but the fact that he didnt want to address the situation until their series against the Athletics resumed the next day speaks to how he doesnt appreciate the gravity of his actions.
Rendons agent, Scott Boras, pointed to how every other stadium has tunnels leading from the dugouts to the clubhouses, sparing players the sometimes-unpleasant business of walking by fans after games.
Major League Baseball needs to address stadium security, Boras said. This is the only stadium in Major League Baseball where fans have access to players after games.
Still, thats no excuse for Rendons behavior. Rendon crossed a line that cant be crossed.
Say what you want about Arte Moreno, but the unpopular Angels owner has been consistent in his demands for how players comport themselves. Moreno made efforts to hold accountable Gary Matthews Jr. and Josh Hamilton, Matthews for reports that he received shipments of human growth hormone and Hamilton for a drug relapse.
Once the league disciplines Rendon, it would be in Morenos best interest to issue a statement denouncing his conduct. The culture of an organization is defined by its owner.
In the meantime, the Angels have to wonder if Rendon is not only broken physically but also broken mentally. In the 2-1 defeat on opening night, he stranded two runners in the fourth inning and two more in the eighth.
With Rendon, the assumption was always that he would produce so long as he could remain on the field. His extreme reaction to being jeered should raise questions about whats suddenly made him so sensitive. Is he starting to question whether he can deliver?
Rendon is healthy but nonetheless figures to miss even more games, this time to his second suspension in as many years. Last year, he was hit with a five-game ban for participating in a brawl against the Mariners while on the injured list.
When Rendon signed with the Angels before the 2020 season, he explained that he chose them over the Dodgers in part because of his concerns about the Hollywood lifestyle. Ironically, his major lapse in judgment brought Hollywood to him, the story of his run-in with the Oakland fan featured prominently on celebrity gossip site TMZ.

Fasting has always been a part of religious practice and tradition. Its also increasingly popular as a tool for weight loss, anti-ageing and longevity and comes in different structures.
DuringRamadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, eating and drinking only early in the morning and late in the evening. The Jews engage in a 25-hour fast during Yom Kippur, and Christians fast for various durations over the day during Lent and other prayer programs.
Another fasting structure is intermittent fasting. During intermittent fasting, one restricts eating to specific times over the days 24 hours and fast during the other hours. This splitting of eating and fasting times varies according to the purpose of fasting. Some limit eating to 10 or 12 hours over the 24 hours of the day allowing for the fast to occur every day in the remaining 12 14 hours. Others observe a 24-hour fast for one or more days.
Research shows that fasting can in many ways improve sleep, especially short-term fasting. Fasting people have individual opinions of shorter sleep, and yet feel deeply relaxed. Fasting helps the body stay well-aligned for sleep. It may improve sleep by balancing our bodys 24-hour internal clock, which is the sleep-wake cycle. This clock is responsible for some bodily functions like body chemical reactions, appetite, and sleep. The clock is regulated primarily by the sunrise and sunset, but the food is also a powerful signal. Sticking to set meal times, done during fasting, can strengthen the 24-hour biological clock. A more coordinated internal body clock means itll be easier to fall and stay asleep.
During fasting, people have higher levels of a body chemical called human growth hormone produced during sleep. This chemical burns fat, restores muscles, and helps the body repair itself. With the digestive system also resting, it further approves the body to focus on that repair and restoration. So, people who fast may wake up refreshed and restored. Other fasting benefits include weight loss, better body chemical reactions, reduced blood sugar and cholesterol, strengthened immune system, delayed ageing, improved overall mood and so on.
While fasting improves sleep quality, it may also impact sleep in negative ways. When people eat at the wrong times or quantities, it can disrupt their sleep. Eating late at night raises the bodys temperature which is the opposite of what typically occurs with sleep, making it difficult to fall and stay asleep. Again, eating heavily near bedtime might upset your stomach making sleep restless. Also, the reduced food intake or extreme hunger from fasting may trigger an increase in cortisol, a body chemical associated with stress and which contributes to keeping one awake. Too much can frustrate falling asleep.
One way to prevent these eating problems is to eat the right foods at the right non-fasting times. Avoid processed foods, high sugar and fried foods; focus on whole foods, plenty of fibre, vegetables, fruits, proteins like fish and healthy fats from nuts. Eat the meal at least 3 hours before bed to avoid sleep disruption by temperature raise and stomach upset while also preventing late-night hunger. Dont go to bed hungry because the brain will be telling itself to stay awake to find food. Limit intake of caffeine, alcohol and nicotine.
In addition to what and when you eat and drink, good sleep behaviours help you sleep well. Do regular safe exercises. Enjoy bedtime with book reading, calming music etc. A soothing bath or meditation helps one to unwind and relax before bed. Ensure you sleep on a quality mattress and pillow, in a place smelling nice, without noise or light especially theblue lightfrom digital devices.
By choosing the right fasting schedule and foods plus adopting healthy sleep habits, you can fast and also achieve quality sleep.
Let us remember that when you sleep, where you sleep and how you sleep affect your mental health, physical well-being and living a healthy life. We all need quality sleep to be set for productivity in our endeavours.

Less sleep shortens the telomeres. Telomeres are structures that are found at the end of chromosomes and play a role in protecting them. Studies show a direct correlation between telomere length and life expectancy. A study published in the British Medical Journal found that getting enough sleep, between 7 to 8 hours per night, was associated with a 12% reduced risk of premature death. So getting quality sleep is a healthy habit you may need to start practising.
Fasting and embracing short periods of comfortable hunger help to activate the two most important genes for longevity - FoxO3 and SIRT. These genes are regulators of lifespan, inflammation, oxidative stress, cancer prevention, immunity, and age-related diseases. Science says that even a 30% reduction of our daily calorie intake is enough to promote longevity and slow ageing. You can simply reduce your portion size by 1-2 spoons.
Building lean muscle through strength training or bodyweight training can help slow down the ageing process. Exercises like squats, lunges, pushups, pullups, and yogic practices like slow Surya Namaskars with longer holds can stimulate muscle as well as the human growth hormone.

Constantly nibbling, snacking, and overeating sends our digestive system on overdrive. If anything is overused without giving it a proper rest it eventually wears out and it's the same with our digestive system.
Research has shown that long-term meditators have a slower process of ageing as compared to those who do not meditate at all. One mechanism by which it helps promote longevity is by managing stress levels. Higher stress levels mean more inflammation and oxidative stress which in turn means lower telomerase activity leading to shorter telomeres. Telomerase is the building block of telomeres that protect cellular DNA from ageing.
Meditation is a great way to reduce stress
Can certain foods promote longevity? While they do not work alone, some foods are associated with a better lifespan by promoting processes associated with longevity like optimum human growth hormone or GABA (supplements or crucifers, nuts, seeds, chicken, eggs, fish) levels. Foods for activating the SIRT1 gene include green tea, leafy greens, crucifers, turmeric, 85% and above dark chocolate, parsley, celery, berries, and responsibly drinking red wine and grapes. Foods for activating the FoxO3 gene include raw onion, apples, citrus fruits, berries, crucifers, green tea, and raw honey.
Eat healthy and balanced meals
A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that engaging in mentally stimulating activities, such as reading, playing games, juggling and learning new skills or language, can help improve cognitive function and increase lifespan.
Indulge in mentally stimulating activities
When you tie all of these lifestyle changes together along with healthier daily habits like giving up alcohol and smoking while exercising regularly, you can increase your health span. And while it's never a guarantee that all of us will live long, it doesn't mean we stop putting in the effort.

Jarrell Miller didnt waste any time calling out Anthony Joshua in the aftermath of his most noteworthy win in four years.
Miller was infamously removed in April 2019 from his shot at a then-unbeaten Joshuas four heavyweight titles because he tested positive for multiple banned substances. It is unclear if Joshua would even entertain the idea of rescheduling a fight with Miller (26-0-1, 22 KOs), but that didnt stop the brash Brooklyn native from questioning the former champs heart after Miller stopped Lucas Browne in the sixth round Saturday night in Dubai.
I want [Daniel] Dubois or I want AJ, Miller told Tyron Woodley in the ring. We got unfinished business. You know, he gotta be a man and step up to the plate. He cant have his balls in his pocket. If he want the fight, lets make it happen. He want an easy win. He fighting Jermaine Franklin coming off a loss, which I thought he beat Dillian Whyte. So AJ, lets get it on. Stop being a p-ssy. You know what I mean? Straight up.
Englands Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) will fight for the first time April 1 since he lost his rematch to Oleksandr Usyk by split decision August 20 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Hell face Franklin (21-1, 14 KOs), of Saginaw, Michigan, in a 12-rounder DAZN will stream from O2 Arena in London.
The 34-year-old Millers victory over Australias Browne (31-4, 27 KOs) was his third win since he resumed his career last June 23 after serving a two-year suspension for another failed PED test in June 2020. The 6-foot-4, 333-pound Miller dropped and stopped the 43-year-old Browne in the sixth round of a scheduled 10-rounder at The Agenda.
Browne was Millers most formidable opponent since he knocked out Romanias Bogdan Dinu (then 18-0) in the fourth round of a November 2018 fight at Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas.
Miller was scheduled to challenge Joshua for Joshuas IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO belts in June 2019 at Madison Square Garden in New York. He was replaced by Andy Ruiz Jr. after Miller tested positive for GW501516, also known as cardarine and endurobol, in March 2019. He also tested positive for human growth hormone and erythropoietin, more commonly called EPO, in separate samples taken in March 2019.
Miller admitted on social media after he was removed from the Joshua fight that he messed up. The undefeated contender was not yet licensed in New York when he failed those tests, though, and therefore wasnt suspended by the New York State Athletic Commission.
Millers compensation package for the Joshua fight wouldve exceeded $5 million. Ruiz replaced Miller on approximately five weeks notice and pulled off one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight history.
Ruiz knocked Joshua to the canvas four times and stopped him in the seventh round. Joshua regained his belts when he won their immediate rematch by 12-round unanimous decision in December 2020 in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia.

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1,000 new cases of osteosarcoma are diagnosed in the United States every year, mainly among teens and adults. A biopsy is used to diagnose osteosarcoma, and the tumor is usually removed during surgery.
As a result of the high number of bone cancers in the United States and worldwide, there is a high demand for advanced prosthetics. These devices require a lot of maintenance and are expensive, and reimbursement policies inhibit their growth. As the government increases its support for amputee initiatives, the market will be able to grow at a rapid rate.
The rise in the number of road accidents is due to rapid modernization and increasing sales of high-performance vehicles. Upper Limb Prosthetics Market is projected at a CAGR of 4.1% and ... - GlobeNewswire
We all know that getting fit - and staying that way - is a job in itself. And, with all the other pressures of modern life, many of us struggle to find the time to prioritise exercise.
Happily, scientists have found that even the laziest, most sweat-resistant among us can transform our health and fitness by doing remarkably little.
From blink-and-miss-it daily bursts of exertion that leave you puffed, to a brisk monthly walk, three-minute cold swims, or simply pottering around the house with the vacuum cleaner, there are many low-effort ways to improve your strength, brain and heart health, balance and longevity. And that means you'll be left with plenty of time to hit the sofa.
Welcome to the lazy guide to getting fit and healthy
Consultant geriatrician Dr Lucy Pollock, author of The Book About Getting Older, balances on each leg for one minute while brushing her teeth in the morning. So no need for a gym membership or any gym kit.
Dr Pollock says: 'The evidence base is that exercises that include both a little bit of strength and balance make a lot of difference.'
Indeed, researchers found that the ability to stand on one leg for ten seconds was linked to survival in middle-aged and older individuals.
The BMJ reported: 'After accounting for age, sex and underlying conditions, an inability to stand unsupported on one leg for ten seconds was associated with an 84 per cent heightened risk of death from any cause within the next decade.'
Dr Pollock says: 'If you are able to stand on one leg, that is a very good sign. It not only improves your strength and balance, it's a way of checking that everything else you're doing is making a difference.'
Squats preserve muscle mass and strength in quads and hamstrings, but it's important to have the correct form for maximum benefits.
Dr Pollock says: 'When you do squats well, you improve core strength by maintaining good posture and keeping your back straight. They're a very good total body exercise.'
Once again, consistency is key, which is why Dr Pollock adds these to her teeth-brushing-balancing routine to make it a daily habit.
One minute is enough to make a difference because it's such a powerful exercise, she says.
Celebrity trainer Zana Morris explains: 'Any form of high-intensity training which includes squats, in particular full ones, where you go as low as you can causes a massive disturbance on muscle fibres and oxygen uptake.
'It increases the heart rate and stimulates production of human growth hormone (HGH), which helps push protein back into our lean tissue. It prompts an increase in metabolism that continues long after the exercise.' Result!
A cold swim isn't for everyone, but how about if you only had to stay in for a few minutes to reap the benefits of more efficient fat-burning, lower inflammation and greater insulin sensitivity?
Dr Susanna Soberg, a Danish scientist specialising in metabolism and stress, has persuasive evidence that just 11 minutes of cold-water swimming weekly (in several short bursts) will do the trick.
She explains that she wanted to find out whether, if this is healthy, 'what is the least exposure we can get away with, because [she] was not a winter swimmer'.
Soberg, the author of Winter Swimming (yes, she's now a convert), discovered that just a few minutes in chilly water activates the 'brown fat' in our body, as its purpose is to burn energy to produce heat to keep us warm.
So how cold must this water be? Even 20c water, she says, is cold enough. (The sea on the Suffolk coast is currently about 7c I know as I recently swam in it myself. Most heated public swimming pools in the UK, though, are between 26c and 28c.)
Soberg says: 'What we found is that when you activate the brown fat, it will increase your thermogenesis your ability to increase heat. This needs to be fuelled with sugar and fat from the bloodstream. In that way it burns calories.
'If you can activate your healthy brown fat, you can lower your white fat and you also lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases.'
And, she says, long-term exposure to the cold don't fret, that just means doing three lots of three or four-minute sessions per week leads to an increased insulin sensitivity, which, she says, is 'a really good marker for lowering your risk of modern lifestyle diseases', such as diabetes.
For stronger bones, why not jump up and down while watching Death In Paradise for a few minutes?
Doing just ten or 20 'jumping repetitions' per day can increase bone mass and strength, according to a recent study from Chukyo University in Japan, as the impact stimulates bone growth.
Similarly pleasing results were found in an earlier American study, where 60 women aged 25-50 undertook a daily jumping programme.
Women did either ten or 20 jumps, with 30 seconds' rest between jumps, twice daily for 16 weeks. All saw gains in hip bone mineral density but the 20-jump group's improvements were significant (0.5 pc) which seems small until you read that the control group lost 1.3 pc of bone density over that time.
Forget about struggling through hours of exhausting tree poses just 15 minutes of daily yoga can lower blood pressure, your resting heart rate and cardiovascular risk, according to one recent study.
Yoga is powerful because it modulates and balances the autonomic nervous system, lowering blood pressure.
The key is that it involves three types of manoeuvres (stretching, holding a pose and head tilts), says Dr Mithu Storoni, neuroscience researcher, yoga instructor and author of Stress-Proof.
'Blood pressure and heart rate are controlled and regulated by your autonomic nervous system,' she explains. 'When you stretch, you get an increase in sympathetic activation. As you release that stretch, you get a rebound increase in parasympathetic activity, which forces your body into a state of relaxation.'
Meanwhile, contracting and releasing muscles as you hold a pose and release it also increases relaxation, and yoga postures that involve tilting the head forwards and backwards trigger autonomic corrective mechanisms which help regulate your stress response and can add to this calming effect.
As you can reap all these benefits so quickly, you can feel good about rolling up your yoga mat after 15 minutes.
Encouraging news. It seems all those people you see pounding the pavements daily may be missing a trick maintaining the not-terribly-taxing habit of a jog, swim or game of badminton just once a month is enough to be beneficial to brain health.
A UCL study led by Dr Sarah-Naomi James found that exercising at least once every four weeks (ideally, throughout your adult life) is linked to better cognitive function in later life.
Brain-protective effects were greatest in those physically active at least one to four times a month more than for people who exercised more frequently for a period in adulthood, but didn't keep it up.
So, consistency is key even if you only do it once a month.
I confess that, personally, I'm thrilled, as in my 50s I'm running less often and had wondered if there was any point but even I can manage running once a month.
Not a fan of structured exercise? But love gardening? Regularly dust and vacuum your house? Excellent.
Researchers from UCL and the University of Sydney found that as little as three or four-minute bursts of vigorous activity throughout the day for example, playing with children and pets, carrying shopping, climbing stairs briskly, walking uphill or running to catch a train was associated with a substantially lower risk of premature death from all causes (compared to doing none).
As the researchers note, their findings align with previous studies showing that 'very small doses of vigorous intermittent activity can improve cardio-respiratory fitness, which is a vital predictor of longevity'.
Dr Pollock says: 'People who did more than 15 minutes of vacuum cleaning, beating mats and changing beds per week did better on many domains than those who did less than 15 minutes per week.'
So yes, consider Henry Hoover your new workout buddy.
She adds: 'People who do housework are generally much fitter and less frail than those who don't.' She also notes that, provided you haven't got heart disease, 'for most people, getting breathless is a very good thing.
'Getting breathless shows you're being active enough to make a difference.'
