A plethora of IBS treatment options exist and doctors who specialize in treating IBS, such as gastroenterologists or primary care providers, can offer treatment plans tailored to a persons specific needs and symptoms. Treatment options may include medication, dietary changes, therapy for mental health conditions like anxiety and other lifestyle changes. Most people see symptoms improve after seeking treatment.

Research suggests a diet low in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) can help people with IBS minimize abdominal pain, excess gas and bloating.
The low FODMAP diet is an evidence based, validated lifestyle modification that has been shown to improve symptoms of IBS, says Dr. Mccutchen. A nutritionist can help determine individual dietary needs and tailor meal plans to help minimize IBS flares.
When medical treatments arent effective in treating IBS symptoms, some doctors may suggest a referral to a licensed mental health professional for cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnotherapy or biofeedback.
Mental health plays a strong role in the symptoms of IBS, says Dr. Mccutchen. Studies have shown that improving your psychological well-being leads to improvement in gut health.
Alternative therapies for IBS include acupuncture, therapeutic massages and supplements that improve gut health, such as probiotics or peppermint oil. One potential cause of irritable bowel syndrome is [that] theres an imbalance of the gut microbiome, says Dr. Chhabra. Trying to achieve the desired balance through probiotics (the good bacteria) and prebiotics (food for the good bacteria) may alleviate some symptoms [of IBS], she adds.

Princess Beatrice has battled with her weight in the past, but she is currently known for her extraordinarily slim body. In 2010, the Princess of York partook in the London Marathon which was when her figure began to visibly change. The Princess reportedly lost two stone in preparation for the run.
Since then, she has kept her trim figure and always looks stunning in photos on royal engagements.
Beatrice was upfront about her weight difficulties in her late teens and early twenties when she had a quite different appearance.
The Princess has attributed her ability to maintain her weight loss to a powerful fitness regimen.
This includes exercise, lots of water, and plenty of fruits and vegetables, which is a claim her fitness trainers have also supported.
Beatrice was motivated to lose weight after pictures taken of her in a swimsuit on a Saint Barthelemy beach in 2008 were released.
Regarding the images, she stated at the time: "I could probably do with losing the odd pound though, so perhaps it's the kick I need.
"It was such an unflattering bikini and I've got one that's so much nicer, so I could have kicked myself for wearing it.
"I thought people were a bit mean, although I know it comes with the territory. The trouble is, I don't have much confidence so it can be quite upsetting," she told The Daily Mail.
Beatrice finished the half-marathon in two hours and 16 minutes in September 2010.
Then in April 2011, the Princess of York partook in the full London Marathon with her boyfriend at the time.
Now 12 years later, Beatrice is a mother-of-one and has never looked better.
Since running the marathons, her weight has not shifted in any great way, and she looks incredible.
Personal trainer Nadya Fairweather helped Princess Beatrice get in shape prior to giving birth to Sienna Mapelli Mozzi.
Nadya commented: "She wanted to build up her stamina and just make exercise a part of her life.
"We train whatever the weather and she never cancels shes pretty hardcore," she told People Magazine.
Princess Beatrice found time for three to five workouts per week, including at-home workouts, despite having a demanding royal schedule.
Prince Philippos of Greece and Nina Flohr married one month after Sienna's birth, and Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi attended the nuptials.
The new mother looked stunning in a two-tone dress that included a wide black skirt with a sparkly pink ribbon adorning it, as well as a beige long-sleeved bodice.
In order to lose weight, it's possible that the royal changed her diet and chose healthier options.
Princess Beatrice most certainly included exercise in her post-birth regimen as well, presumably at varying intensities depending on the type of pregnancy she had.

Andradio hostJackie 'O' Henderson is nowchanging up herstyle as she enjoys her newfound confidence.
Her co-hostKyle Sandilands was shocked when she showed up to workon Thursday sporting professional-looking hair and makeup.
'This is the best you've ever... Well, I've seen you look good, but never this early in the morning,' a stunned Kyle said.
'You look - let me tell you, I'm not joking - fantastic.'
KIIS FM newsreader Brooklyn Ross added: 'You look ready for a red carpet [or] TV.'
Jackie, who was wearing a pair of $820 Fendi hoop earrings and a netted long-sleeved top, was thrilled by her colleagues' compliments.
'Oh, that's so good you've said that!' she squealed.
'Tomorrow I've got something on, and for the life of me, I cannot find anyone to do my hair and makeup for it,' she added.
She then explained she was doing a 'practice run' for her big event on Friday.
The Kyle and Jackie O Show is broadcast weekdays from 6am, meaning Jackie usually needs to wake up at about 4am to get ready for work.
Often, she just throws on a plain outfit and keeps her hair and makeup minimal.
Jackie recently revealed she'd shed a whopping 18kg in just five months, but was forced to shut down rumours it was due to taking a celebrity weight-loss drug.
Many speculated she was taking Ozempic, but on Monday Jackie revealed her weight loss was done the old-fashioned way: by following a low-calorie diet, exercising regularly and cutting out alcohol.
Kyle revealed he'd been asked byseveral guests athis wedding toTegan Kynastonon Saturday whetherJackie - who is an ambassador for Weight Watchers - had been prescribed Ozempic to help shed the kilos.
'That diabetic medication people talk about taking, I don't take that,' Jackie replied.
'Honestly, you can do it, guys... but I will say, I reckon [cutting out] alcohol and exercise was a big thing. I've never done [that] before so that was kind of the kicker for me,' she added.
Kyle noted Jackie isn't 'big on needles', so would never be comfortable injecting herself with diabetes medication to lose weight.
He went on to say her results came from followingWeight Watchers, 'puttingthe wine bottle away' and ditching 'the biscuits and cheese'.
Jackie, who recently started playing tennis regularly, added that quitting alcohol and embracing exercise 'was a big thing [she'd] never done before'.
The mother of one also confirmed she didn't even drink alcohol at Kyle's wedding.
It comes after Jackie recently reflected on her weight loss journey in a moving social media post.
'Last year I joined WW again because I wanted to get my health back in order and I know their program works for me,' she wrote.
'Losing weight was never about what I looked like in the mirror, but rather an overall sense of well-being and trying to regain my energy levels,' she continued.
'Five months ago I was 18 kilos heavier and I had zero energy. My health was suffering as a result, so I decided to do a complete lifestyle change.'
Jackie alsorecently spoke about her new diet on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, revealing she often skips breakfast, a practice known as intermittent fasting.
She also avoids carbohydrates, and satiates her hunger throughout the day by snacking on pre-cut pieces of steak.
'I cook steak and slice it, and then I'll just have a little sliver of steak if I'm hungry,' Jackie said.
She resists splurging on high-calorie foods for lunch, opting to eat just 'three little slivers of steak' and a few Vietnamese rice paper rolls containing fish and cabbage.
Kyle was shocked by her small portion size, telling her: 'A dog would eat more!'
For dinner, Jackie usually eats vegetables and a protein such as chicken or red meat.
In between meals, Jackie treats herself to smoothies and Starbucks Frappuccinos, a type of blended ice coffee drink.
Jackie hasn't always followed such a restrictive diet.
In February, she told Woman's Day she used to binge on pizza, sausage rolls and microwave meals from the petrol station before she took control of her health.
'I was eating a lot of food that I could get in a hurry. You know, pizza and sandwiches and just takeaway, I wasn't cooking myself,' she said.
'And I think it's always best when you know what you're putting into your body. I just got really lazy.'

The key is obviously systems and how each system in the body are interlinked. From immune system to metabolic system to our endocrine system, everything is dependent to the nutrition orthe food we eat and how well our gut is functioning. One disarray leads to a chain reaction that continues and all of it starts from improper nutrition and imbalance of our guts microbiome.
We are housing trillions of pathogens in our body. So many bacteria in our small intestine, large intestine, even in our stomach sometimes, Smriti explains.

But why are we hosting these pathogens? Because, we need them, she explains. Our entire immune system, our entire digestive system and entire brain health is dependent on this bacteria functioning well.
We all have heard about good bacteria and bad bacteria in our gut. Sometimes, due to ineffective nutrition and bad lifestyle choice, we get what is referred to as dysbiosis or an imbalance in the bacteria. And this is where it all begins.
There are unwanted pathogens growing and the beneficial ones are not enough to basically keep that balance.
So when the unwanted starts going, they cause a lot of issues. They can cause havoc in our gut, bringing in a lot of inflammation, bringing in a lot of bowel diseases, like a lot of constant loose stool & diarrhoea, chronic constipation which doesnt go away no matter how much we hydrate.
Of Weight Loss Diets and Functional Nutrition Functional nutrition is basically the nutrition to support the functionality of your body, she shares. The body, a combination of various systems like immune system, digestive system, metabolic system, nervous system, lymphatic system, runs on nutrients. But if your digestion is not right and you are not able to get the nutrients, then the systems would be disrupted.
If you don't absorb what you are eating into cells, you're starving your biochemistry. You don't have the nutrients to run that biochemistry. All these biochemical pathways which take place inside us, they get broken.
She adds that managing these biochemical pathways can help relieve the symptoms and the many diseases as well.
A lot of symptoms, and most often diseases are just dysfunctions and easy to reverse and put into remission. Just go upstream and look into all these functionalities and you'll get your answers. And it's easy to fix with food.
If you're cutting carbs out, especially for women, understand that your thyroid gland will dysfunction at the end of it, because thyroid needs a lot of carbohydrates to function.
Similar is the case with calorie deficit diets and OMAD. When you go on a starvation diet, it's a calorie restriction diet, what happens is our bodies using all the nutrients that you eating from the food, to function, like I said, in all this, while I've been talking about it, when you cut out that nutrition, your body has to shut off certain functions, because it doesn't have enough to carry out whatever it was carrying out, she adds.
And the cycle does not end there. Smriti warns how crash diets can lead to long term impact on your overall health. You will end up losing your hair, get saggy skin, dry skin, wrinkles, and a lot of digestive dysfunction, because you have also stopped your microbiome. If you're not feeding your beneficial bacteria with the things that it needs it is going to have a lot of impact on your digestion and immune system later.
So what should one do? Smriti advises reason and caution. Being slim should not be the goal.
I think what you need to do is more mindful eating. Restrict your carbs a bit yes, especially processed foods, grains, sugary foods, everything which can harm your system but not real vegetables and fruits and whatever nature intends us to eat we should eat. Dont do some crazy diet because you want to look good and look thin. It's okay to have some weight as long as it's not visceral fat. Don't get fatty liver and fatty pancreas, that's harmful. It's okay to have a little bit of weight and not be thin and not compromising your system.

A MAN has shared photos of his incredible 300 pound weight loss - and shed light on what slimming down actually looks like.
Cole Prochaska, from South Carolina, posted before and after pictures of his dramatic weight loss journey on Twitter over the weekend.
The post - which has since gone viral - shows Cole before he embarked on his journey next to current picture of him shirtless and flexing.
He captioned it: "Over 336lbs down! Most didn't believe in me but I believed in myself."
Cole shared that - despite his incredible transformation - he still felt self conscious about his body, as his dramatic weight loss had left his with loose skin around his torso and abdomen.
He showcased it in the post, writing: "It's very hard to share a shirtless picture but I've come so far."
About two years ago, Cole said he weighed almost 600 pounds and was "at the lowest point of [his] life".
But he decided he "didn't want to die young," he wrote on Twitter, where he regularly shares updates on his fitness journey.
By hitting the gym regularly, Cole was able to lose a whopping 330 pounds.
He also started 'eating right' and walked at least 10,000 steps a day.
He now weighs roughly 224-226 pounds and plans to have body contouring surgery to remove the loose skin.
"I'm hoping I can get my insurance to pay for it. If not GoFundMe might be my next option," Cole wrote.
His post was flooded with words of support and offers to help fund his skin removal surgery.
"I'd donate in a split second," one Twitter user wrote.
But commenters were also quick to praise his courage in posting showcasing this excess skin.
"There is only pride in that shirtless pic," one said.
"I am sure this is great inspiration for others who are in a similar situation," another added.
One even said: "Absolutely inspirational! Im struggling to lose 30 lbs but this makes me feel like I can get there too if I just keep at it!"
In the UK, excess skin removal is usually considered cosmetic and in most cases must be funded by patients themselves.
On its page about bariatric surgery and what patients might experience after it, Sheffield Teaching Hospital wrote that someone's body mass index (BMI) needs to be 28 or below and maintained that way for one year to be considered for funding for skin removal surgery on the NHS.
Meanwhile, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust wrote that "funding for these procedures is not automatically available and must be approved by the Clinical Commissioning Group responsible for the area where the patients lives before they can be referred" to its plastic surgery team.

The internet is divided over before and after photos showing a severely obese man's impressive weight loss. Cole Prochaska, a South Carolina resident, lost more than 336 pounds in less than two years, but despite his significant accomplishments, he still feels self-conscious about his appearance.
The reason for feeling self-conscious is that he now has a significant amount of loose skin due to the drastic weight loss. Sharing a picture of the before and after weight loss transformation on Twitter, Prochaska wrote in the caption:
On Twitter, Cole Prochaska credited the gym, healthy nutrition, and "at least 10k steps a day" for his achievements. Body shaping surgery is the next on the schedule now that he weighs between 224 and 226 pounds.
This surgical treatment, also known as body shaping or skin removal, eliminates any loose skin that remains after significant weight loss. It might be directed towards the arms, breasts, face, thighs, lower abdomen, or upper body.
According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, good candidates for body contouring have attained their target weight and have maintained it for at least six months.

The View fans begged her to to share her "weight loss secrets" as she opened up about her "size."
Ana posted a video to her Instagram on Monday.
She did an unboxing from the National Hispanic Media Coalition, who sent her a box of their merch.
"I am very excited today because I got a box of goodies from the National Hispanic Media Coalition," she said, as she flung the orange boa around in a circle.
The View host paired her boa with a white silk tank top and light green silk pants.
She was barefoot, as it appeared her slip-on shoes were resting beside her.
One of her friends helped with the unboxing, as she had no idea what to do.
In the box was a water bottle, a baseball cap, and two T-shirts.
"You got this T-shirt," her friend said, "Oh, you got two T-shirts!"
Ana held it up in front of her and said: "Yeah, because they don't know what size I am anymore and neither do I."
They also sent her tea, a mug, and a blanket.
However, most fans were more concerned about how slim Ana is now, rather than what she had in her box.
"You look fantastic ! What is your weight loss secret?" asked one fan.
Although many people were speculating what she might have done, one fan answered the first who asked the question.
"Shes mentioned over the last few months that last summer she went to a weight loss seminar called rancho la puerta in Mexico!" they said.
"Then when she came back she hired a personal trainer to lose weight plus shes been attending Pilates classes and playing pickle ball and I know shes looking terrific!"
But, Ana did not confirm or deny what the fan said.

In March, Ana opened up about her seven-month weight loss journey.
She revealed she checked into a "fat farm," while responding to a fan question onInstagram.
In the comment section of a recent post, the fan asked: "I want to know how you are losing weight so gracefully."
Ana, 51, very honestly, replied: "Went for a week to a fat-farm, exercise and wellness spa -@rancholapuerta- in Baja last August for a drastic reboot.

LOSING a significant amount of weight can change your life, often in unexpected ways.
One young mom lost 87 pounds in one year but was surprised when she didn't end up with a common side effect.
In March of 2020, Lauren Polinskey (@laurenpolinskey) weighed 230 pounds and was ready to make a change.
Over the course of the next year, she lost 87 pounds and now posts motivational content for fellow fitness-minded women.
Despite the change, the 143-pound influencer lacks the loose skin commonly associated with major weight loss.
In a video, she opened up about the main factor in her "snap back" to such a toned body.
Posing in a pair of fitted leggings, Polinskey smiled as a frequently-heard comment appeared on the screen in a caption.
"You lost 87 pounds and barely have loose skin because you're young," read the common gripe from critics.
"Okay. You got me there," Polinskey responded, mouthing along to a viral audio clip. "But that is not a crime."
In the video's description, she talked at length about her weight loss journey.
"I was so worried about loose skin and my mom said 'Lauren, that's just an excuse!'" she remembered.
When Polinskey started working out, her mom said, "'You're young, you'll snap back!'"
"I honestly didn't believe her, but she was right (duh, moms always are and she's a nurse)," Polinskey wrote.
"The younger we are, our bodies are still producing a good amount of collagen," she explained. "That's what keeps our skin tight and firm."
It's also why Polinskey encourages women in their twenties who want to lose weight to "start ASAP."
"You're going to snap back a lot better than you think," she advised.
She also said she was "lucky" not to have much loose skin.
"I have some on my lower tummy and I definitely need a boob job now," Polinskey wrote.
The most important thing, she added, is women don't allow the fear of loose skin to stop them from hitting their fitness goals.
"I'll probably get a tummy tuck when I'm done having babies one day," she admitted. "No shame if you do end up needing skin removal, babe!"
"I promise you're still going to be feeling WAY better healthy," she assured followers. "Loose skin is not a big deal!"
