A mother-of-three effectively starved herself to death as she struggled to eat following a gastric bypass operation.

Kimberley Wall, 44, weighed 23 stone when she underwent the surgery in 2008.

But as a result of the operation, over the next ten years she could barely eat and her weight had plummeted to just five stone when she died in 2018.

Kimberley, from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, could only manage spoonfuls of food and became so weak she was often bed-ridden.

It is reported that she first gained weight through comfort eating after a miscarriage aged 18.

In 2014, she highlighted her issues following the gastric bypass in an interview with a local paper.

At the time she said: I knew the bypass was a drastic step, but Id tried every diet under the sun without any success, so the idea of being able to make a lasting change was very appealing.

I thought of myself running around in the park with the children, and was drawn to the idea. Now Ive gone from being too fat to move to being weak and undernourished.

I thought the operation would give me the life Id dreamed of but it turns out I couldnt have been more wrong. I could barely eat any food.

Whatever I did manage to swallow made my stomach turn.

I felt sick all the time. I completely regret having the gastric bypass.

At an inquest into her death in Heywood, Greater Manchester, heard Kimberley had been in and out of hospital for six years and was due to see a specialist when she died.

Her GP Dr Richard Darling told the inquest she was not suffering from Crohns disease or bipolar. He said she was referred to counselling because of depression and anxiety and the gastroenterology department due to nausea and abdominal pain.

Dr Darling added: We discussed the eating disorder but Kimberley said she didnt feel that was the case saying: Its not that I dont want to eat I do but I cant.

Kimberleys mother Muriel Stephenson told the inquest her daughter had a period in intensive care in August 2018 after her blood pressure dropped dramatically, and died in October last year after she collapsed at home.

Mrs Stephenson said: As time went by she became more and more depressed, paranoid and worried about everything.

She was living on her own with her children and some days she was unable to would get them off to school and would spend the day in bed.

She needed carers who came in to help with food and she was taking antibiotics.

Recording a narrative conclusion the coroner Matthew Cox said there are risks as well as benefits to the gastric bypass procedure.

He said:Kimberlys problem with nutrition is a rare but recognised complication of the gastric bypass surgery.

Given the extent of the problems Kimberly went on to suffer she had problems with anxiety and depression and this exasperated the eating difficulties.

It is clear to to me the source of her problem was investigated thoroughly over the years.
