Potty training tips and how to know when your child is ready – Belfast Live

Mar 31st, 2020

Potty training is a big milestone in a toddler's life and one which many parents sometimes dread.

And with the country staying home to try and combat Coronavirus, now may be a good time to start this journey.

As part of our In This Together campaign, Belfast certified Sleep and Potty Training Consultant Susan Wallace from Settled Petals has given her top tips to help ease you and your child through this sometimes daunting process.

Susan explains: "In order to effectively potty train, several things need to align:-

Please find a Potty Training questionnaire which may give you an indicator of whether your child is ready:-

1. How old is your child?

Under 22 months Award 3 points

22 months or over Award 0 points

2. Can your child stay dry for 2 hours or more?

Yes Award 2 points

No Award 0 points

3. Does your child wake up dry after a nap?

Yes Award 2 points

No Award 0 points

4. Does your child use potty training vocabulary?

Yes Award 1 point

No Award 0 points

5. Does your child show interest in others using the toilet?

Yes Award 2 points

No Award 0 points

6. Does your child let you know when they have wet / pooped even occasionally?

Yes Award 2 points

No Award 0 points

7. Does your child tell you when they need to wet / pooped even occasionally?

Yes Award 3 points

No Award 0 points

Add up the points allocated to each question.

5 points are less: It is unlikely that your child is ready to begin the potty training process. Dont worry they are still developing. Try this quiz again in a few weeks

6 11 points: Your child is showing some signs that they may be ready to begin. With consistency and support they may be ready to commence training.

Over 12 points: It is likely your child is very ready and capable to commence training.

"I recommend starting at a time when there is not too much going on. It is not ideal to commence at a time where they are encountering lots of change (such as a new baby/moving house/changing nursery rooms etc). It is also important that training does not begin if your child is experiencing a UTI or Constipation (seek support from your GP in this instance).

"It is important not to rush this process, as Potty Training is more likely to be effective, if we go in your childs own time."

So if you think your child is ready to begin this process, here are a few more of Susan's top tips:

Prepare your child - bring the potty out in advance, and they can even sit on this with their clothes on. They can decorate it with stickers etc (just not in the bowl itself!). There are cartoons on YouTube which can prepare them (I advise parents to check their appropriateness first before showing to their child), and there are lots of books on the market too. It can be helpful if the parents include their children in flushing the chain etc after they have been to the toilet.
