We have heard it multiple times that cooking or heating food in the microwave can cause cancer. But is it really true? Is cooking in the microwave not safe? Celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija in her recent Instagram post claims that microwaves are completely safe and does not increase one's risk of cancer. Here is all that she said in the video. There are various types of radiation that have different levels of energy. For example, X-rays have lots of energy, which can potentially break the DNA. This is called ionising radiation and accumulated exposure over time can contribute to cancer risk. On the other hand, microwaves, radio waves and the light that we can see are non-ionising radiation, which cannot increase your risk of cancer. The only non-ionising radiation which causes cancer is the UV rays, which is why people are asked to protect themselves by wearing sunscreen.

A microwave oven uses microwave radiation to heat the food, but it does not make the food radioactive.
