Geraint Thomas feeling the nerves ahead of Zwift challenge: ‘To do 12 hours back-to-back. all the contact points will be sore’ – Telegraph.co.uk

Apr 16th, 2020

Geraint Thomas admits he is unsure what to expect from his three-day charity Zwift challenge which begins on Wednesday morning, but the 2018 Tour de France champion says he is reasonably sure his derrireis going to be in bits by Friday evening.

Thomas will ride 12-hour shifts for three consecutive days, mirroring a typical NHS hospital shift, to raise money for the health service during the coronavirus crisis.

The 33-year-old, who is self-isolating at home in Cardiff with wife Sara and six-month old son Macs, will be joined by Wales rugby legend Shane Williams who will likewise be cycling from his home.

Im actually quite nervous, Thomas said. The longest ride Ive ever ridden in one go is about 8hrs20min. So to do 12hrs back-to-back, on three consecutive days. all the contact points will be sore. My a---, my hands. I think my a--- will be in bits by Friday.

Thomas said he was not normally a user of chamois cream or vaseline while riding but said he would definitely be making an exception over the next three days.

There are upsides to the challenge. Thomas, who is usually training and dieting hard ahead of the Tour at this point of the year, treated himself to a Nutella and marshmallow-topped pizza in preparation. And he said he would be excused the night-time feeds and nappy changes for the next three days.
