Eating more to lose weight sounds weird, however, that's true and possible and the same is known as reverse dieting. In this diet, eating more, for some people helps to maintain a lean physique. This diet is effective for people who came off from a restrictive diet or have been on yo-yo dieting for several years. In this, people should gradually increase calories in very small stages.Brocha Soloff, RD, CPT told Livestrong, "While bodybuilders use it to build muscle, a regular person can use it to allow continued weight loss and avoid plateauing that is usually associated with chronic dieting." There are many people who follow a restrictive diet and later, they struggle to maintain lean physiques as post dieting the metabolism slows down as the body.

So, in this diet, slowly increase in calorie intake back to a normal level while keeping protein intake relatively the same. Many of the people in the past showed fat loss while eating a normal level of calories per day. However, one should know that the reverse diet is a pretty slow process. If you are following this reverse dieting, then one should add 1 to 5 percent more calories to the diet. So, ideally, increase 50100 calories per week than the normal input. An increase in calorie intake will boost your metabolism and the extra calories will be burned with non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) such as walking, talking, and fidgeting among others. Also, it will help to normalize the levels of circulating hormones, like leptin, which is responsible for regulating appetite and body weight.

Who Should Try It?Ideally, this particular diet is not for those who need to lose weight, but rather for someone who needs to restore their metabolism back to proper function after a prolonged and restricted low-calorie diet. And that's why it is mostly done by athletes and bodybuilders. As per studies, one should focus on a balanced diet as they have been focused on a restricted diet. So, add more carbs and healthy fats.

Soloff added, "The drawback is that off-days must be calculated and counted for, often with the help of a trained professional such as a registered dietitian, in order to avoid eating excessively on those days. If calories are excessive on off-days, that can prevent weight loss and even cause dramatic weight gain. It may be hard for some to bounce back and forth, and the lack of consistency may make it difficult to sustain and develop habitual lifestyle change." The best part of reverse dieting is that it reduces the risk of binge eating on unhealthy food items.
