We all have habits when it comes to eating some are good and some are not so good.

Some routines we have had since childhood and some are newer to our daily life. Its important to look more deeply at the way we do things when we are trying to get to a healthier weight, maintain a healthy weight or manage something like diabetes.

Here are some not-so-good habits that may cause us to gain weight: Eating too fast; Always cleaning our plate; Eating when not hungry; Eating while standing up (may lead to eating mindlessly or too quickly); Always eating dessert; and Skipping meals (or maybe just breakfast).

The writer of this article had the privilege of visiting with LaVonne Elfring about how she manages to stay on a healthy path.

She is married to Jerry - has two daughters, two sons-in-law and three grandchildren. Growing up on a farm in Iowa and being involved in basketball, she kept active.

In high school, she moved to Nebraska and became involved in league basketball and synchronized swimming, which she continued while attending the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

In the 1960s, she provided an exercise program on local television and taught physical activity classes in Lincoln.

She retired from Cedars, a non-profit organization focused on the safety and well-being of children and youth, where she worked with teen moms and their babies in the TLC group home, which she found very rewarding.

Now in her early 70s, she is actively volunteering in the community.
