Jul 5th, 2021

We have all been guilty of inhaling our food when it arrives on the table now a leading health and wellness expert has warned it could be the cause of those extra kilos.

A leading health and wellness doctor has revealed how eating slower will help you lose weight and keep the kilos off.

Dr Vincent Candrawinata, founder of Renovatio, said the key was to eat less in the first 15 to 20 minutes of the meal so your body has enough time to alert the brain that you are full.

Our body is a complex machine and it can take time for mechanical hormone signals to reach the brain from the tummy to tell us that we are full," he said.

Eating too quickly not only means we keep eating before our brain understands we are full, it also causes greater fluctuations in blood glucose levels, which can lead to insulin resistance.

Dr Candrawinata suggested five ways we can slow down our eating to help lose the extra pesky weight.

Dr Candrawinata urged people to enjoy and savour the food by chewing each mouthful at least 30 times and experience the flavours of the meal.

Research has shown when people spend double the time chewing the food, they reduce their consumption by 15 per cent.

PUT YOUR CUTLERY DOWN BETWEEN BITES

Placing your cutlery down between bites gives you an activity to do and redirects your focus.

Dehydration can mask itself as hunger so having a drink in between mouthfuls of food not only stops you eating but helps fill you up.

He advises to try and finish a glass of water before you finish your meal.

Talking with people around you has been described as a tactical game changer as its difficult to consume food and eat at the same time.

Eating whole foods such as whole grains, fresh fruit, and vegetables as it takes more time to eat.

Dr Candrawinata suggested using utensil you wouldnt normally use, such as chopsticks, to eat.

People who eat with chopsticks often eat way less and get fuller faster because chopsticks slow you down, he said.

He added people should take of their overall health while aiming to lose weight, which included supporting your immune system with activated phenolics and fish oil.
