Joaquin Phoenix has proven to be one of the most talented actors in Hollywood. Throughout his career, Phoenix has played numerous dark and unconventional characters in many independent films. His incredible performances have won him numerous awards, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, a Grammy Award, and two Golden Globe Awards. Its no surprise that, in 2020, he was named one of the greatest actors of the 21st century by The New York Times.

One of Phoenixs to this day remains the iconic DC Comics character The Joker in the 2019 thriller-drama of the same name. No one can deny that the actor made an incredible job with this role, he even won the Best Actor award at the 92nd Annual Academy Awards for his performance. But in order to play this iconic antihero, Phoenix had to go through an extreme physical preparation. The actor recently admitted that the worst part of getting ready for this role was the diet he had to follow.

Joaquin Phoenix and his brother River Phoenix started acting in the late 70s, landing small parts in commercials as well as in TV series. They both made their acting debut in a 1982 episode of the television series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, titled "Christmas Song". In an interview for The Guardian, Phoenix revealed that his first time in a TV set made him feel instantaneous joy.

The actor described it as The most enjoyable thing. For some kids, it's the first time they crack a ball or score a goal. For me, it was this. I was eight years old, and I remember the first scene on the TV set so vividly. And I knew that I loved it the physical sensation, how powerful it was. That's the feeling I've been chasing ever since.

After successfully landing roles in many other TV series, Phoenix finally made his feature film debut in the adventure film SpaceCamp in 1986. Since then, the actor has appeared in more than 50 movies and TV series over the years. His most iconic role is probably the role of Arthur Fleck in Joker (2019).

As it turns out, Phoenix wanted to play a Joker-like role even before it was announced this character would be getting a standalone movie. Phoenix revealed that he loved the idea of exploring a comic book character by way of a study or cautionary tale rather than focusing on his origin story.

Phoenix admitted in an interview for Collider, "Three or four years ago, I called my agent and said, 'Why don't they want to take one of these characters and just make a lower budget film about it, a movie but a character study, and why not take one of the villains?" So when he heard there was a Joker film in the makings, Phoenix was excited to take on the role, "I was like, 'Oh, that's so exciting, that's the kind of experience I want to have, with a movie based on a comic character.' I felt like you could get something on-screen."

In order to play the Joker, Joaquin Phoenix had to completely transform his body. The actor lost more than 50 pounds to portray this character. All because, after reading the script and meeting with writer and director Todd Phillips, it was decided that he needed to look hungry and unhealthy to play the part well.

In order to undergo this extreme physical transformation, Phoenix had to follow a very restrictive diet. Its something Ive done before and you work with a doctor regimented and overseen and safe, the actor told Access Hollywood. The whole process mainly involved restricting calories in a short period of time so that his character would appear malnourished, with his ribs and spine sticking out.

Although transforming into the Joker took a toll on Joaquin Phoenixs physical and mental health, the actor is set to star in the upcoming sequel alongside Lady Gaga. Directed by Todd Phillips based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Scott SilverJoker: Folie Deux is going to be a psychological thriller and musical film.

The movie, set to premiere in October 2024, will star Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, the Joker, Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, and Deadpool star Zazie Beetz, reprising the role of Sophie Dumond.
