Andersen’s voice carries weight, but not as much as the noise he makes on the ice for the Maple Leafs – Toronto Sun

Mar 16th, 2020

As much as Frederik Andersen has become a valued voice within the Maple Leafs leadership group, the veteran netminders greatest strength comes between the whistles.

And Andersen knows it.

As a goalie, Im not going to be the loudest guy in the room, Andersen said. Im playing a different sport then all the guys technically.

The way I lead is just by playing my heart out and trying to play as well as possible and really let nothing faze me when times are a little bit tough. And thats some of the things, just by experience, I need to grow into and get better at. Thats the way it has evolved over the years.

From coach Sheldon Keefe, there was agreement with the manner in which Andersen thinks he should lead.

The way he is a leader, first of all as a goaltender, is to give the team confidence in the net, Keefe said. Thats really what a goaltenders job is, to be consistent in your preparation and your approach and your demeanour and your performance.

At the same time, he is not a guy who speaks a lot, but he is guy that when he speaks, he has meaningful things to say and you listen and you pay attention to it.

Keefe, meanwhile, didnt take much issue with the fact that no Leafs came to the defence of Andersen when Tampa Bay Lightning forward Alex Killorn deliberately rammed himself onto the prone Leafs goalie during the third period on Tuesday.

None of the Leafs on the ice Morgan Rielly, Cody Ceci, Pierre Engvall, Alex Kerfoot and Denis Malgin wrestled Killorn away, though not all of them may have noticed what happened.

Keefes take on it was measured.

You want someone to acknowledge it and speak up that its not acceptable, Keefe said. But at the same time, I really believe strongly that you can overreact to situations like that.

I was a player and I have a pretty good perspective in that I just dont buy into the fact you make a big scene and you overreact and its like someone is going to say, Oh, okay, I wont do that anymore.

Thats just not reality. I think the players know what they are doing, they are pretty methodical about it, you have to trust the referees are going to protect the players on the ice, and its our job to win the games on the power play and take advantage there.

That said, we want to be standing up for each other, were family, all that kind of stuff, but its very important, especially this time of year, that were composed.

Andersen had a similar view.

It would have been undisciplined to go after him and maybe take a two-minute penalty for something that didnt really matter, Andersen said. I think that that could hurt us even more, giving them the power play for something like that.

Its all situational. That suggests its a good time we didnt do anything.

RIELLY RESPONDS

The morning after his first game since Jan. 12, Rielly didnt report anything he was not expecting.

Rielly missed 23 games because of a broken foot, but played nearly 22 minutes against Tampa Bay.

Its sore, and youre a little bit more tired than normal, but its just a good feeling to be back and out here, Rielly said after practice Wednesday.

I was happy with certain things (about his play) and certain things I want to do better. I think its about building off it.

The main thing is my body felt pretty good and I thought I was decent for the most part. But you always want to be better with the puck. Thats the hardest part. Moving forward, that will be something I will try to focus on.

OH, SHOOTOUT

With Aerosmiths Sweet Emotion blaring at the end of practice at the Ford Performance Centre, the Leafs practised the shootout, with the winning goal supplied by Martin (Not Bobby Orr) Marincin.

A quick Marincin shot fooled Jack Campbell, bringing cheers from those on Marincins side.

That move is cheat code, Andersen said. He has the long reach and its like a glitch. He did a great job. He has got me with that one too.

Not as fun is the Leafs record in shootouts this season. Theyre 1-5 in the individual skills competition to end what is otherwise a team game.

No sense of (why the Leafs dont have a better shootout record), Keefe said. Its not an area I have spent a whole lot of time thinking about. Im recognizing were at a point in the season where it could be a major factor, not that its less important earlier in the season.

But youre focusing in more at this time of year on those small details that maybe get lost throughout the season. I do believe there are elements of randomness that go on in a shootout that are uncontrollable and you cant really prepare and practise for.

LOOSE LEAFS

Keefe on defenceman Travis Dermott, who played a Leafs-high 25 minutes six seconds against Tampa: He has earned that through the fact he has improved his play and his confidence. He has stepped up and done a really good job. Rielly on the power-play goals scored by William Nylander and Auston Matthews versus the Lightning: For them to put the puck in the net, to move it around in the offensive zone, that gives them confidence and thats what they want.
