Sales of ‘illegal’ weight loss products under investigation by Trading Standards – here’s what we know so far – Cornwall Live

Aug 25th, 2017

Cornwall Councils Trading Standards team is investigating after former Miss England finalist Charlotte Thomson admitted selling weight-loss products she claims are illegal.

The company, Valentus, employs representatives around the world to promote and sell weight-loss products including Slim Roast Weightloss Coffee.

The product is being sold in Cornwall by a number of representatives, including Miss Thomson, who joined the team in January.

She confessed in a Facebook Live post that she'd been visited by Trading Standards at her Portreath home while in her dressing gown and they told her the company may be trading in the UK illegally.

In her video, which has now been viewed more than 30,000 times, she claimed to have had no idea that the products were illegal and said that she had been left heartbroken and devastated to have her entire business taken away.

Cornwall Council's Trading Standards team have confirmed an investigation is taking place but would give no further details.

Cornwall Live has not yet been able to make contact with Valentus, but according to executive agency Companies House, Valentus Limited in the UK was dissolved in April 2017, four months ago.

The word Valentus comes from the Latin word meaning prevail.

The company was launched in the UK in November 2015, according to Companies House.

The founder and CEO of Valentus in Dave Jordan.

Valentus has a number of products marketed at the health and weight-loss markets.

One of its biggest and most popular products is the Slim Roast Coffee, which is the same product seen being sold across Cornwall, and the same product Miss Thomson claims she has been told is illegal in the UK.

On the Valentus website, the coffee is described as a dark Italian roast, is said to contain feel good ingredients and detox components.

The active ingredients given on the site are:

Non GMO Dark Roast Instant Coffee, Green Coffee Bean Extract, Cassiolamine Extract, Garcinia Cambogia Extract, Phaseolamin, Green Tea Extract, L-Carnitine Fumarate, Natural Caffeine, Cissus Quadrangularis Extract, Ginseng Extract.

According to the website, the brew is said to control appetite, regulate sugar absorption, regulate fat absorption, promote brain health and focus, elevate your mood and provide antioxidants.

A number of testimonials can be seen on the website to back up the products claims.

There are no mentions of licences on the companies website.

Miss Thomson said that she was told the company and the products were not registered in the UK and the products were not legally allowed to be sold here.

A file on the Companies House website shows that Valentus Limited in the UK was dissolved in April this year.
