St. Francis to offer non-surgical weight loss procedure – SW News Media

Sep 6th, 2017

St. Francis Regional Medical Center is offering a non-surgical weight loss procedure for people with obesity where diet and exercise have not worked and do not qualify for or want surgery.

"We often see patients who are clinically obese and in desperate need of medical intervention to help them lose weight, when diet and exercise alone have failed and surgery is not an option," Allina Health Clinic General Surgeon Jayson Dock said in a news release. "This new procedure provides this group of 'in-between' patients with access to a non-surgical, reversible option to encourage new habits and lasting results."

The procedure consists of a dual balloon inserted into the stomach, where it remains for six months. The balloon makes people feel full and less hungry so they eat less, according to the release. The stomach is not altered in any way.

While the balloon is in and six months after it's removed, patients attend diet and exercise coaching sessions, with access to an online tool for support resources and information.

In June 2013, the American Medical Association classified obesity as a disease and is defined as having a Body Mass Index of more than 30.

In an FDA study, patients with the balloon procedure had 2.3 times more weight loss compared to those who dieted and exercised, according to the release. Patients lost up to 72 pounds in a year.
