Weight loss tips: How to lose weight like this guy who lost 17 kgs to fit into his favourite pair of jeans – GQ India

As far as the contribution of weight loss tips and weight loss plans go to create a sustainable fitness routine, the ones that suggest following a self-depriving lifestyle will not let you go a long way. Your fitness routine should be built around your personal goals and easy (read: doable) lifestyle changes that can actually help you imbibe healthy eating habits and working out daily as a part and parcel of your life.

We know this reads like a lot of hard work in the first go, but such a routine will help you meet (and even exceed) your fitness goals. And, here to vouch for such a fitness routine is Shekhar Khandelwal. He lost 17 kgs in 6 months to fit into a decade-old pair of jeans by making the below small changes in his daily routine and in the process fell in love with a fitter way of life. Those jeans are actually really loose now, he quips.

I believe Ive had a very peculiar and also interesting body transformation as I wasnt unfit per se, but I was living a sedentary life. I had a gym membership and was also a runner from 2012- 2018. I ran various full marathons (42 kms) and also an ultra-marathon (75 kms). But I always felt like something was missing. My weight kept fluctuating. If I was running regularly, I would be fine but if I didnt run for 1-2 weeks, Id feel bloated. I had to switch from wearing fitting t-shirts to loose shirts, and it was such a constant dilemma.

So I decided to find a way to get out of it and not struggle with weight issues every couple of weeks. And in my quest for the same, I realised that I need to unlearn old habits and learn new things to embrace a fitter a life or as I like to call it attain 'holistic health'.

I busted a lot of common food myths on this path, and made the below changes in my lifestyle to not just lose weight but also make permanent, healthy changes.


Wake up early, preferably before sunrise



Take cold water showers


Eat homemade food


Avoid wheat (as it is rich in gluten), no milk (it is difficult to digest), no sugar (it is full of empty calories


Eat an early dinner - before 7:00 pm


Eat smaller meals every 2-3 hours - fix your meal timings


Chew your food (most important, cant stress enough on this)


Drink 3 litres of water everyday


Keep chewing on cloves and cardamom throughout the day to avoid any sugar cravings


Eat whole foods instead of processed options


Workout beyond the gym your health is dependent on what you do outside the gym as well

In line with the above 12 changes, he outlines the below sample diet plan for anyone to refer to commence their journey.

5:00 am: A glass of lukewarm water + lemon + honey + cinnamon + cayenne pepper

5:30 am: Beetroot + mint leaf juice

6:00 - 7:00 am: Workout

7:30 am: Sattu + dates + banana + almonds + chia seeds shake

9:00 am: Poha with veggies + 4 whole eggs

10:00 am: Espresso with coconut oil

11:00 am: Seeds + nuts + fruit

1:00 pm: Lunch - Rice + lentils + veggies + salad

4:00 pm: Green tea + chana/peanuts/makhana

7:00 pm: Dinner - Millets roti and veggies

10:00 pm: Chamomile tea

Since a traditional gym workout wasnt his cup of tea, Shekhar says, he started following a CrossFit routine. "Its a high Intensity workout regime. It focuses a lot on functionalmovements done at a very high intensity but for a shorter duration of time. 30 minutes of CrossFit sufficed my needs."

Try to bring about a lifestyle change, that is permanent. Enrolling in a gym for 3 months before a cousins marriage will not get you anywhere.
