Nov 27th, 2023

In the enigmatic world of WWE, transformations are not uncommon, but none quite as intriguing as the metamorphosis of Gunther, formerly known as Walter. Stepping into the limelight as the formidable leader of Imperium in NXT, Gunther's journey took an unexpected turn when he moved to the main roster. Behind the curtains of this evolution lies a captivating tale of reinvention and determination. Pictures speak a thousand words, and in Gunther's case, they narrate a story of profound change. As he rises to the top of WWE, fans might want to dive into the narrative of Gunther's dramatic weight loss, exploring the reasons behind his decision, the method of his transformation, and the seismic impact it has had on his ascent as WWE's swiftest rising star.

In his NXT days, Gunther, formerly known as Walter, stood as the imposing leader of Imperium. However, a remarkable transformation took place when he moved to the main roster. Comparing images from his NXT stint, it's evident that Gunther underwent a significant weight loss. His previous heavyweight stature added to the intimidation factor, portraying him as a hard-hitting monster in the ring.

Gunther disclosed on Ryan Satin's Out of Character podcast that he shed a lot of pounds during this transition, even though he cherished his former heavier look, inspired by wrestling giants. He said, I lost about 60 or 65 pounds. I always loved the look of the big Japanese heavyweights like Stan Hansen, Terry Gordy, Vader, Scott Norton, like those chunky foreign heavyweights. I always loved the look and I always thought that look really suited my style. I kind of knew moving over that I was going to change some stuff, even though I didn't know exactly what it was. But I always thought like I have to do my part. I have to show that I'm adapting, and I have to show that I put the work in for change. I think that was the most obvious choice [...] I will be more appealing and stand out more than looking like I looked the way before...I think if you're in the top league on national television every week, and you want to represent the top tier athletes, you have to be in shape to do so."

The new and improved Gunther presents a lean, muscular physique, still delivering impactful blows in the ring. In a conversation with Chris Van Vliet, he revealed that the decision to undergo weight loss wasn't fueled by dissatisfaction with his previous look. Instead, Gunther aimed to present a distinct image for the main roster audience. He said, "When I was my old me, I didn't feel like someone that was too heavy. I didn't feel like an overweight person, because it was always very comfortable. Looking back now and seeing the distance, it's like 'Oh my gosh. When I signed on for the main roster...let's bring the best version of yourself you can. You're going to be in front of millions of people. I think that's necessary now. I'm glad I did it. The bigger guy has his place in wrestling, but I felt it was time to take a step and progress.

Speaking to Metro, he attributed his weight-loss success to a combination of proper nutrition and the support of his Imperium comrades, Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci, who helped keep him on track. He said, Everybody knows how I looked before, so everybody knows I really liked to eat before that! I had to make a cut to that. To limit food intake is a little bit tricky. I love to cook, and I like food, but at the end of the day, Ive got to give credit to [Ludwig] Kaiser and [Giovanni Vinci], because theyve been in incredible shape already. I just jumped on board with them and they kicked my butt to pull through even when its difficult [he smiled]. Like I said, it always comes back to the support system and thats from many areas in your life.

Gunther's transformation has undeniably paid dividends, propelling him to become WWE's fastest rising star. Achieving historic milestones, he now holds the title of the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history. Discussing his evolution on After the Bell with Corey Graves, Gunther shared if his weight loss influenced his in-ring performance. He revealed while talking about lasting 71 minutes in the Royal Rumble match, "I always used to be, even when I was heaviest, I got to say, I never got an issue with stamina. I had really long matches before. But, I got to say, it is still a lot easier now than it used to be. Going into the Rumble, if you start at #1, you have, you know, you have to struggle through all of it if you want to make it. But, I like those situations, if that makes sense. Let's call it a high-pressure situation."

Even though he's supremely confident in his ability no matter what weight, clearly, the strategic decision to shed pounds has not only sculpted Gunther physically but has also elevated his status as a dominant force in the world of professional wrestling.
